CELEBRATING MAY DAY
Recent years have seen a remarkable resurgence for the labor movement in America, earning victory after victory after victory for working people along with the support of the American public. But there is still plenty of work ahead, and billionaires and big corporations are lashing out – Amazon, SpaceX and Trader Joe’s are even challenging the constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Board itself. Here are some ways we show our solidarity in honor of International Workers’ Day today.· Contact our senators and tell them to stop stalling and confirm working people’s ally Julie Su as Labor Secretary
· Remind all our members of Congress we are still waiting for them to pass the PRO Act (H.R.20 and S.567) to expand workers’ rights on the job and ease unfair burdens on organizing
· Sign up to volunteer with or consider a donation to multiple ballot initiative campaigns for working people this cycle, including efforts to repeal “right to work for less” in Arizona, guarantee the right to organize for gig work drivers in Massachusetts and the right to strike for teachers in Nevada, and secure paid sick time for all in Alaska, Missouri and Nebraska
· Take the #NoContractNoCoffee pledge to act as an ally with the Starbucks Workers Union as it bargains with corporate on a foundational framework for contracts
PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL PHONE BANK OUTREACH TO VOTERS WHOSE STATES HAVE ABORTION ACCESS INITIATIVES ON THE BALLOT
This Thursday, May 2nd, on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s leaked opinion overturning Roe vs. Wade, National Indivisible is coordinating a zoom phone bank to reach out to voters in states that have or are likely to have abortion access initiatives on the 2024 ballot. Let’s sign up here, and tell our friends to sign up, too, in order to reach as many voters as possible.
DEMAND—AGAIN—ACTION ON GUNS
While serving a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Charlotte, NC, four law enforcement officers were fatally shot and four hospitalized in the latest incident of officers being shot and killed in the line of duty. The suspect was also killed as police returned fire. Let’s express to our Members of Congress with the appropriate expression of outrage that it’s long past time that they co-sponsor and pass the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act (S.3407 and H.R.6596).
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
VT/NORTHEASTERN STATES – ONE-DAY BOYCOTT OF HANNAFORD FOR WORKERS’ RIGHTS
The farmworker collective Migrant Justice is continuing its Milk With Dignity initiative to push corporations to raise wages and improve conditions on dairy farms. They are focusing pressure right now on Hannaford Supermarket, one of the largest chains in the Northeast. Today, they are marking May Day by picketing a Hannaford supermarket in Williston, Vermont, and they are calling on customers not to cross the picket line. If we can, let’s join the farmworkers on the line any time from 7AM-11PM tomorrow or at the rally at 5:30PM at 78 Marshall Ave in Williston, and let’s all be sure to respect the picket line and not shop Hannaford today.
