DEPORTATION FORCES ASSAULT FATHER’S DAY VIGIL AT DELANEY HALL AND MORE HUNGER STRIKE UPDATES
We are now on Day 36 of the hunger strikes in Adelanto and 32 at Delaney Hall.
On day 35/31 yesterday, activists gathered outside the Newark facility to hold a vigil in honor of the dads being held there on Father’s Day. One of them was waving an American flag when a reported GEO Group employee ran her over with a car.
If you drew it as a political cartoon, people would say it was over the top. But here it is captured on video (with multiple angles here courtesy of Sussex Visibility Brigade):

ICE agents then pepper sprayed and maced vigil attendees.
If an undocumented immigrant was caught on video using their vehicle as a deadly weapon like this, Trump and Stephen Miller might well send in the National Guard to lock them up. 🗣️ Let’s take a moment today to reach out to New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherill (phone/email), Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Essex County Prosector Theodore Stevens and New Jersey State Attorney General Jennifer Davenport and ask them what it’s going to take for someone to get arrested for assaulting the public. 🗣️
On the West Coast, today marks the final immigration hearing for Luis, one of the hunger strike leaders in Adelanto and a 20-year LA resident who attempted to legally establish residence in the United Sates and was scammed. Defend Migrants Alliance is asking for a show of support for him. ✊🏿 We can donate to his continued legal fight here, commit to attending the virtual hearing today at 4PM ET/1PM PT here, and find more ways to stand with Luis here. ✊🏼
As always, we can find more ways to show solidarity with the hunger strikers here.
ENTERPRISE IS HELPING ICE TAKE OUR NEIGHBORS
During Operation Metro Surge, Enterprise Rent-a-Car rented over one thousand vehicles to ICE, helping them to abduct and terrorize our neighbors. Activists on the ground estimated they provided more half of ICE’s wheels. They’re profiting off kidnapping, and they should not be allowed to go on like it’s business as usual.
A group of organizers led by 18 Million Rising, the Stop Avelo Coalition and Sunrise is coming together to renew our efforts to put pressure on Enterprise to put the brakes on their collaboration with the deportation machine. 🙋🏿♀️ They’re holding a launch call for this new push TOMORROW at 6PM ET we can sign up for here. 🙋🏻
🤜🏻 They’ll also put together an action page here with tools to help us contact their CEO and main rental line to urge them to drop their ICE contracts (language here!), tools for organizing a protest at local Enterprise locations, guidance on how we can reserve and cancel bookings with Enterprise as an act of protest from home, and other steps we can take. 🤛🏿
Let’s join the call and this campaign against a corporate enabler!
BILLIONAIRE WEALTH TAX MAKES THE BALLOT IN CALIFORNIA
The oligarchs are increasingly open about calling the shots in our politics, and wealth inequality is threatening democracy and our society. This November, we’re going to have an opportunity to send a direct message to the billionaires and the politicians that we’re fed up with it and ready for real change – and protect health care from Trump’s Medicaid cuts at the same time.
Last week, California’s Secretary of State certified that the SEIU-backed billionaire wealth tax initiative secured enough signatures to make it to the ballot. This proposal would be a one-time, 5% emergency tax on their assets to shore up the state’s health care system in the wake of the MAGA murder budget. Organizers offered a compromise 2% levy, which Governor Gavin Newsom, who opposes this measure, shot down. So now we’re going to fight this one out on the campaign trail. ✊🏿 Let’s sign up here to get notified of volunteer opportunities in the coming weeks and use their social media toolkit here to help spread the word in our networks. ✊🏻
TRUMP WANTS MORE FOREVER CHEMICALS IN OUR DRINKING WATER
Some of the greatest accomplishments of the Biden Administration were in getting clean, safe water for America’s families. The chemical industry was not happy, and with many of its employees now in leadership positions in the administration their work is being torn up.
The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed unraveling key protections against unsafe levels of four types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS or “forever chemicals,” in drinking water. It also allows water systems to delay compliance with standards for two more. These new rules are a handout to polluters disguised as public protection and if implemented would threaten the health of more than 100 million Americans.
These rules are currently open for public comment on the Federal Register through July 20th. 📝 Let’s make our voices heard against this giveaway to polluters and for safe drinking water. We can submit our comments here, find guidance on how to write an effective public comment here, and find talking points and sample language to use from the Plastic Pollution Coalition here, from the National Resources Defense Council here, from Food & Water Watch here from Earthjustice here and from the EPA itself here and here. 📝
🎤 There will also be a virtual public hearing on this proposal on July 7th, where the public will be able to provide verbal comments. We can register to attend and comment by July 1st here. 🎤
Thanks to our friends at the Americans of Conscience Checklist and The 50501 Movement for their work on this issue. We have a whole wave of terrible regulations to weigh in on the next few weeks, including their planned gag order on federal employees (comments due by Friday), pushing trans folks out of emergency shelters, a review of a human warehouse in Maryland, a crackdown on vote-by-mail, the politicization of scientific research, and rules that would kick even more people off their health care.
GOP PLAN CUTS DISABILITY COMPENSATION FOR VETERANS… TO “TAKE CARE” OF VETERANS
The Republican Party is extremely proud of itself for their Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (H.R. 9237/S.4744), a package of 60 bills introduced earlier this month and centered around the Major Richard Star Act to end the wounded veterans tax and allow combat-injured veterans to collect their full retirement pay and VA disability compensation. And that’s great!
Here’s the part they don’t want us talking about, and why they’ve been denounced by groups like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled America Veterans: they’ve repeatedly blocked votes on this fix this Congress over “deficit” concerns, and they’re paying for it now by cutting disability compensation for the first- and fifth-most common service-related conditions, tinnitus and obstructive sleep apnea. More than 1.5 million veterans, mostly from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, will lose out on $57 billion in benefits they’ve earned over the next decade. But hey, at least Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are getting their taxes cut.
The bill also triples a VA home loan fee, undermines job protections for VA employees, and lays the groundwork for privatization of the system. It’s following many of the prescriptions of Project 2025.
🗣️ Let’s reach out to our members of Congress and ask them to vote no when this bill and its poison pay-fors come to the floor, and push for a clean vote on the Major Richard Star Act (H.R. 2102) instead. We can find language to use from Common Defense here. 🗣️
LAST WEEK’S JUDGES TO THANK
Facing threats, political pressure and a Supreme Court majority that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting.
District court judge Amanda Brailsford partially blocked a new law that would have meant transgender people in Idaho would face criminal charges for using restrooms that match their gender identities. ✍🏿 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Brailsford for stopping trans folks from being targeted for using public bathrooms. ✍🏻
