Take Action: Urge Your Representatives to Co-Sponsor The Real Courts Rule of Law Act

FIX THE (IMMIGRATION) COURTS

With Congress out on recess, only a few scheduled legislative days left before September, and the House floor kneecapped by Donald Trump’s insistence on pressing forward with the vote suppressing “SAVE” Act, it seems like a good time to consider the positive changes we’ll need to fight in the years to come. One area we can focus: our immigration courts, whose massive backlog and flawed structure have been brought into in the limelight by Trump’s efforts to turn them into another cog in the deportation machine.

Activists are calling on Congress to reform the immigration court system to ensure due process and independence from political interference, along with securing speedier resolutions to cases. The American Immigration Lawyers Association has long endorsed the Real Courts, Rule of Law Act, currently before the House as H.R. 7836. This legislation, also backed by the Federal and American Bar Associations, would remove these courts from the Justice Department’s control, increase the number of judges and resources allocated to them, install key transparency measures, secure the right to counsel and quality interpreter services for folks going through it, and more. It currently only has six co-sponsors. 🗣️ AILA has set up an email tool to reach out to our members of Congress to ask them to get on board – let’s put it to use here. 🗣️

BATTLE FOR THE (STATE) HOUSE IN PENNSYLVANIA

Josh Shapiro is heavily favored to win re-election as governor of Pennsylvania. The big question is what kind of legislature he’ll have to work with in his second term. Democrats have just a one-seat majority in the House that they’re looking to expand and are hoping to flip the state senate, which the GOP controls 27-23. We could secure a trifecta, which would allow Democrats to redraw congressional maps to balance out GOP gerrymandering and allow for passage of stalled bills to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour and efforts to legalize marijuana. But that starts with preserving our lead in the lower chamber.

SEC TRYING TO MAKE PUBLICLY TRADED CORPORATIONS LESS TRANSPARENT

The rigging of our economy for the wealthy and powerful has been on full display at the Securities and Exchange Commission, with a historic low in enforcement actions and a senior official leaving after reportedly clashing with political appointees over cases against Trump megadonors. Now they’re proposing weakening transparency requirements for publicly traded companies.

Public comments are due TODAY on a plan to end mandated quarterly reporting on earnings, allowing corporations to let their investors know about their earnings no more than twice a year. Critics warn this would mean more volatile trading and more advantages for insiders with the resources and relationships to get information about what’s happening over the rest of us. ✍🏻 We can submit comments opposing this change to the SEC directly here. The consumer advocates at Better Markets have built a tool to help us do so here and gathered more information we can work from here. ✍🏾

We need to make our efforts visible and accessible everywhere and to everyone, not just to people consuming higher-quality media or spending time on social media platforms. Using wheatpasting to put up posters with clear, stark messages and QR codes to connect folks to more information and action opportunities helps us reach folks in the real world. The folks at Stand Up for Science (aka Science Fight Club) have launched a new microflyering campaign to take on RFK Jr., the politicization of research funding and the destruction of valuable public resources. 🪧 We can find their instructions on how to wheatpaste here and posters we can put to work here! 🪧

Facing threats, political pressure and a Supreme Court majority that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. (Making it all the more important Democrats hold the line on keeping Trump from stacking the courts.) Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting.

In two separate cases, district court judges Myong Joun and Amir Ali blocked attempts by the government to overhaul the public service loan forgiveness program limiting eligibility according to whether employers were compliant with the White House’s political priorities. 📝 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank these judges for preventing the government from holding employees student loan forgiveness hostage. 📝
