⚖️ PROTECT THE POWER OF THE JUDICIARY ⚖️
One of the few ways to seek relief from the administration's lawlessness has been through the court system. Naturally, MAGA has turned to attacking the courts, and the arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan is just the tip of the spear. Slavishly Trump-devoted Republicans in the House have passed the No Rogue Rulings Act of 2025, which limits the district court judges' ability to place injunctions on harmful policies enacted by the government. The bill now goes to the Senate, and we will need to stop it there. ☎️ Let's reach out to our Senators now and tell them they have a moral responsibility to stop the administration's lawlessness and that passing this bill will lead us one step farther on the road to fascism. We can find sample email language to use from the National Campaign for Justice here and a call script here. ☎️ (We can also continue to press them to take action in response to Trump’s defiance of court orders with scripts and language here, and read this tracker from to learn more about how far they’ve gone..
👶 PROTECT OUR CHILDREN 👶
It just keeps happening. A two-year-old American citizen banished to Honduras while her father frantically tried to get her back. One-year-old and five-year-old American citizens detained because their mom made a wrong turn. Not one but two American children with cancer kicked out of the country. That adult citizens keep getting caught in the gears of Trump’s deportation machine is bad enough, but it’s especially heinous that we are putting kids through this – and ominous that not even they are getting due process.
📞 Let’s reach out to our members of Congress and ask them a very simple question: what are they doing to protect American citizen children from being abducted and removed by ICE? 📞
🎓 TRUMP’S PUNITIVE POLICIES ON STUDENT LOANS 🎓
Biden’s administration tried hard to alleviate the burden of student loan debt, with a cancellation program, deleting the debts of students lured into dodgy for profit colleges, and trying to institute income based repayment plans. Even during his own administration, many of Biden’s efforts were blocked.
Now Trump has done a complete 180, striking down the loan forgiveness plan, threatening to cut public service loan forgiveness and starting May 5th turning more than 5 million student loan borrowers in default to the debt collectors. In typical Trump administration double speak, this is being done to “help borrowers get back into repayment.”
Overseeing this debt collection will be a huge administrative task for this administration while they are simultaneously trying to shut down the Department of Education. Trump was expected to hand loan repayment management over to the Treasury Department, but instead his nonsensical and likely illegal solution to this is to transfer it to the Small Business Administration.
Like many of Trump’s administration’s policies, this one will disproportionately harm people on lower incomes, because those are the people who have been unable to repay their loans. Women will also be disproportionately impacted, due to careers interrupted by childcare.
Here’s some things we can do:
📞 We can urge our leaders to push back against this punitive policy against struggling borrowers, sending this Resistbot message by texting SIGN PUWOSK to 50409 or using the language for calls. 📞
📩 We can protest against the movement of the loan repayment program to the Small Business Administration, which seems doomed to failure. 📩
🗣️ We can ask our state legislators to protect student loan borrowers from predatory practices and dodgy loans, following the model of the Private Student Loan Collection Reform Act in California 🗣️
🆘 If we’re borrowers in default, we can check out these resources from the Student Debt Crisis Center on how we might be able to navigate Trump’s new strikes against us 🆘
🤝 We can join the Debt Collective in continuing to organize for student debt forgiveness and publicly-funded college. They are holding organizing calls for folks over 50 with student debt TONIGHT at 8 PM Eastern we can sign up for here, and for all student debtors at 7PM next Tuesday that we can sign up for here 🤝
🚗 ALABAMA ABORTION FUNDS ARE GETTING BACK TO WORK – AND NEED OUR HELP 🚗
After three years of forced silence, reproductive justice advocates in Alabama have finally won the right to get back to work. A federal judge ruled on March 31st that the state cannot prosecute people or groups who help Alabama women travel to other states to get an abortion. Now they need our support to support others! The Yellowhammer Fund is gearing up our the annual abortion fund-a-thon, and they’re recruiting volunteers to set up a fundraising team for their efforts. They’re holding a training so we can learn more TOMORROW night at 6:00 PM Central/7PM Eastern. 💲 Let’s sign up here if we want to take the lead on supporting abortion rights everywhere. We can also donate to the Yellowhammer Fund ourselves here or to the West Alabama Women’s Center here. 💲
🪧 GENERAL STRIKE: LET’S CONSIDER JOINING THE 3.5% 🪧
Political scientist Erica Chenoweth famously conduct ed a study and concluded that (1) nonviolent civil disobedience campaigns are twice as likely to achieve their goals as violent campaigns, and (2) that it takes only 3.5% of a country’s population actively participating in nonviolent campaigns to achieve political change. Using that research, The General Strike, a grassroots organization, is building momentum toward a nationwide strike of working people across sectors to demand racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice. The strike will occur when 3.5% of the US population—around 10,662,947 individuals—have signed a strike card. 📝 Let’s explore The General Strike website and if we’re so moved, let’s sign a strike card. (We can also read more about general strikes here.) 📝
