😨 TARIFFS AND TURMOIL ON CAPITOL HILL 😨
While most of the attention in Washington is on the GOP’s crafting of the Medicaid killer budget (scripts, talking points and volunteer opportunities here) and most of ours is on May Day and the horrors of the deportation machine, there’s still some significant developments happening on Capitol Hill that our members of Congress should know we’re paying attention to.
As soon as today, the Senate is set to vote on Ron Wyden (D-OR)’s resolution to block Trump’s 10%-across-the-board import tax hike (S.J. Res. 49). With consumer confidence approaching Great Recession levels, a recession increasingly likely, and empty shelves at stores just weeks away as shipments from China disappear, this is a moment for our senators to show us what’s more important to them – the good of regular America or not making Trump mad as he trashes our futures. 📞 Let’s call our senators and demand they vote for this resolution to stop Trump’s self-inflicted economic disaster – scripts and language here. 📞
Meanwhile in the House, Speaker Mike Johnson is desperately trying to make sure no one gets his members on record choosing between Trump and us. He snuck in a provision in a procedural vote to prevent Democrats from forcing votes on resolutions of inquiry through September 30th – blocking further progress on proposed Democratic requests for information into Signalgate, Elon Musk’s conflicts of interest, and how much Musk’s DOGE minions have hurt our communities. (The vote was straight party line.) Johnson’s fear of Democrats using these procedural weapons is as good an endorsement as we’re going to get of them – and there are plenty he can’t stop so easily. 📞 If we have Democratic representatives, let’s thank them for voting no on this effort and urge them to use every tool available to disrupt Johnson’s House during the reconciliation process. 👶 MAKE A VIDEO TO SAVE HEAD START – EVENT TOMORROW 👶
Parents, educators, and advocates across the nation are rising up in response to Trump’s leaked plans to eliminate Head Start. Over 60 years, this program has helped 40 million kids prepare for school with child care and preschool, and it’s a proven success: Head Start kids earn better grades and test scores in K-12, they’re likelier to graduate high school, they’re healthier, and they have better-paying jobs. We’re not letting it go without a fight.
TOMORROW AT 7PM EASTERN, the National Head Start Association is holding a video party – featuring a professional videographer helping us create short clips we can share to spread the word about the threat to our kids. 💻 Let’s sign up to join here – and if we can’t make it (happy May Day!), we can register anyways and get the recording and the resources sent to us afterwards. 💻 Furthermore, we can use scripts and language here to push our own members of Congress to save Head Start, or send them this Resistbot by texting SIGN PEZVKT to 50409.
🪚 KEEP PUBLIC MONEY OUT OF ELON’S POCKETS 🪚
The good folks at TeslaTakedown.com have expanded their efforts beyond seeking to make Tesla an unpopular choice for car buyers. Now they’re pushing local and state governments to cancel contracts and pull their investments from Musk’s businesses. This would send a clear, powerful message to Musk and other oligarchs that there are consequences to his illegal takeover of the federal government, and continue to increase the financial pressure on him.
Our opening effort in this campaign is urging city councils to pass resolutions calling for bans on doing business with Musk’s companies and to pull public pension money out of them. 🤝 Let’s join this effort. We can find a guide on how to push a divestment resolution here, and sign up to be connected with folks working on this in our area here. 🤝 We can also use these tools to push BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street, and whoever is running our 401(k)s to get out of the Elon Musk business here. 🛑 STOP COMMERCIAL AIRLINE CONTRACTS WITH ICE 🛑
In a business move to increase revenues, Avelo Airlines has contracted with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to conduct deportation flights for the Trump regime’s inhumane immigration agenda. ProPublica recently reported on the dismal conditions on deportation flights by a charter airline called GlobalX, including rows of migrants chained at the wrists and ankles, orders not to make eye contact with, to feed, or to speak with the detained passengers, and concerns from flight attendants that they would not be able to keep their passengers safe in an emergency. Let’s support those who are opposing these contracts:
📝 We can sign and share this petition demanding that Avelo end its contract with ICE and pledge to boycott the airline until it does so. 📝
📞 We can thank Connecticut Attorney General William Tong for reviewing whether Avelo should continue receiving state tax breaks and subsidies. 📞
📞 If we are in Connecticut, we can tell our state legislators to support House Bill 7212, which would require companies, including airlines, proposing to do business with the state to pledge not to “cooperate or contract with any federal immigration authority for purposes of the detention, holding, or transportation of an individual.” 📞
🪧 If we’re in Southern California, we can join weekly protests at Avelo’s hub at the Hollywood Burbank Airport. 🪧
📞 We can tell our state legislators and state attorneys general that we want our state to end tax breaks and subsidies for businesses that cooperate or contract with ICE. 📞

“Mutual aid is about mobilizing communities to address a shared injustice and working together to collectively find solutions that don’t rely on any one person, corporation, or government entity.” Mutual aid networks may organize around providing for any number of human needs, from legal and financial assistance for medical care to free breakfasts for children to community bail funds to immigration-raid community alerts, and more. 🤜 As the Trump regime continues its legally questionable (to say the least) decimation of the American safety net, let’s think about creating mutual aid networks in our communities. We can start by using these resources from the American Friends Services Committee. We can also find an existing mutual aid network to get involved with here. 🤛
