HOUSE VOTE ON UKRAINE FUNDING?
Ukraine needs US funding if it is to continue fighting. We have a responsibility to help maintain democracies where they are thriving. Ukraine needs to be able to maintain its own sovereignty. Ukraine cannot hold out much longer. Speaker Johnson has been sitting on Ukraine funding legislation but has been bombarded by the far right that if he brings it up for a vote, he will lose his Speaker role. However, recently, Speaker Johnson suggested a vote on a standalone bill could come soon after Congress returns from Easter recess on 9 April. Let’s contact our representatives and tell them that we want this legislation passed. Our friends are counting on us to help them save their democracy. We can also sign this from Vet Votes.
PROMOTE VOTING, ONE EMAIL AT A TIME
Here’s an easy way that each of us can promote voting: create a “register to vote” signature that automatically appears at the end of every email we send—example. If we’re not sure how to do this, we can ask Google or a favorite search engine how to make an email signature for our computers and mobile devices. Let’s adopt this simple way of getting folks registered and reminding them to vote!
STUDENTS, PARENTS, EDUCATORS: HELP PROPUBLICA REPORT ON EDUCATION
The award-winning investigative newsroom ProPublica is building a network of sources who are knowledgeable about the schools in their communities. “At the moment,” ProPublica writes, “we’re especially interested in learning about public funding for private institutions, teacher retention, homeschooling, virtual education, behavioral threat assessments, school surveillance technology, inequities and how schools are addressing the mental health crisis among students.” If we are students, parents, educators, or experts in education, let’s fill out this form to join ProPublica’s network of sources.
WIN BACK THE HOUSE WITH NEW VOTE FORWARD CAMPAIGNS!
Vote Forward has announced new campaigns in which we can write letters to voters in highly competitive California and New York U.S. Congressional races. If Democrats win in these districts in November, there’s a good chance Democrats will regain the House of Representatives. Vote Forward makes it easy for us—here’s a “how-to” we can look at—and studies of their past letter-writing campaigns prove that this get-out-the-vote tactic works. Let’s sign up and start writing.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
LA - SUPPORT GUN-FREE ZONE IN NEW ORLEANS
A bill in the state senate (SB419) would, if passed, prohibit the concealed carrying of handguns in the French Quarter of New Orleans. There will be a hearing before the Senate Local and Municipal Affairs Committee as early as the week of April 8, 2024, according to the NRA, which, naturally, opposes this bill. Let’s make sure that the Committee hears from those who support this bill. We can reach the Committee to express our support for SB419 by email sl&m@legis.la.gov, or by phone 225-342-9127.
