LET’S MAKE SURE WE CAN VOTE IN NOVEMBER!
In her blog Civil Discourse, Joyce Vance reminds us that some states are very aggressive about moving voters to “inactive” status and purging them from the voter registration rolls—and that now is the time to make sure we are able to vote in November. Under US law, she says, “you can’t be removed from the voter rolls closer than 90 days out from the election. We’re past that point now, so, if you check your status and you’re an active voter, your state can’t change that before the election.” Let’s follow her advice. Even if we think we’re okay, let’s check and, if necessary, update our voter registration here, and let’s take a screenshot of our voter status so we have documentation at the polls.
STOP THE GEORGIA VOTER CANCELLATION PORTAL
The NAACP is raising alarms against the launch of an on-line system in Georgia that allows anyone to cancel someone else’s voter registration as long as they have that person’s date of birth, drivers’ license number, or social security number. While this is supposed to be used for people who are deceased or who have moved out of state, the lack of accountability in the system can easily lead to the disenfranchisement of voters, and while misuse of the system is a felony, there’s a strong likelihood that disenfranchisement cases will not get resolved until after the election. Let’s join the NAACP’s call and ask the DOJ via this simple on-line messaging form to investigate and shut down this portal ASAP, and to reverse any cancellations that were done through the portal site. If we live in Georgia, we should also contact Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger and our local election officials to demand that they use their influence to shut it down.
VOLUNTEER WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL VOTER PROJECT
The Environmental Voter Project is a nonpartisan nonprofit that targets very specific individuals: registered voters who list climate change as their No. 1 issue but who are unlikely to cast ballots in November based on their voting history. The group estimates that more than 8 million environmentalists did not vote in the 2020 presidential election and more than 13 million skipped the 2022 midterm elections. Although the group is nonpartisan, there’s a good chance people concerned about the environment and climate change would vote our way if we can get them to vote. Get involved with the Environmental Voter Project’s phone banks, postcarding or canvassing at Get Involved | Environmental Voter Project.
ONE ELECTORAL VOTE COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
If the Blue Wall of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania holds, Kamala Harris only needs one more electoral vote to secure the presidency – and that vote could come from the Nebraska Second Congressional District. Currently rated as Lean Dem by Decision Desk HQ, NE-02 also features a competitive House race between Republican incumbent Don Bacon and Democratic state senator Tony Vargas – making it a battleground for the White House and the House of Representatives. The Vargas campaign is holding virtual phonebanks on Wednesday evenings this month. Let’s sign up to help out here.
