In most US states, more than half of all elections are uncontested. The organization Every State Blue is working to change that. Specifically, Every State Blue has a goal of running and supporting Democrats in every election—so that Democratic voters even in the reddest districts are not forgotten, so that Democratic candidates engage all voters in discussing Democratic party ideas, so that no GOP candidate anywhere gets a free pass. THE RISKS IF WE DON’T HOLD THE SENATE
While the political news last week centered on the convention, there were plenty of major developments in the courts:
· A Trump-appointed district court judge in Texas blocked the Federal Trade Commission’s rule banning employers’ use of noncompete agreements
· A Trump-appointed district court judge in Kansas suggested bans on possessing machine guns were unconstitutional.
· Just weeks before the election, the GOP-packed Supreme Court partially revived an Arizona law requiring election officials to reject state voter registration forms submitted with proof of U.S. citizenship
This comes in the wake of the Supreme Court blocking enforcement of a new federal rule meant to include LGBTQ+ students in Title IX’s ban on sex discrimination and the 8th Circuit halting Biden’s student debt relief plan. The damage being done by Republican appointees to progressive Biden Administration policies is a reminder of the importance of holding the Senate, so that President Harris can continue to replace vacancies in the federal judiciary with folks who won’t impose their own right-wing values on our Constitution. Grassroots Democrats is holding phonebanks on Thursday and Saturday to reach voters on behalf of Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI, running for Senator Stabenow’s open seat). We can sign up to help here.
EDUCATE PEOPLE ON PROJECT 2025
While Trump continues to try to distance himself from Project 2025, ProPublica has uncovered actual training videos directed at conservative administrators to “be ready on day one,” for a government take-over, should Trump win the election. NPR also has a series of podcasts that explain what’s in Project 2025 and why it is so dangerous to our democracy. We can also use this site to see how aspects of Project 2025 would affect us. Let’s educate ourselves, as well as friends and family who may be leaning toward voting for Trump on what’s at stake.
