ARIZONA FOR ABORTION ACCESS IS OFF AND RUNNING
The Arizona Abortion Access Act, now officially dubbed Proposition 139, could guarantee reproductive rights for almost eight million people… just to start with. The turnout boost might also help swing the Presidency, Kyrsten Sinema’s Senate seat, two key congressional races and both state legislative houses to the Democratic Party. Tomorrow night organizers will hold a virtual campaign kickoff to celebrate getting on the ballot and talk about their plans for getting out the vote. We can sign up here to join the event, find phonebanks to help with on their Moibilize page here and add our names to their volunteer list to learn about future opportunities here.ONE OF OUR MOST PROGRESSIVE SENATORS IS UP FOR REELECTION
Wisconsin’s Senator Tammy Baldwin was featured at the DNC, speaking up about the importance of defending Social Security and Medicare against Republican attacks. But Republicans are coming after her too with her seat up for reelection in November. Baldwin is the first openly gay senator in American history and one of the most progressive members of the upper house. She’s been a leader in the fights for securing abortion rights, the Respect for Marriage Act, and cleaning up forever chemicals and led efforts to investigate the high cost of inhalers and invest a billion dollars in our childcare infrastructure. She’s being challenged in a must-have race for control of the Senate by a Republican banker and real estate executive named Eric Hovde. Hovde is a pro-Trump conservative who backed the Dobbs decision, wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act and blamed single parents and social welfare programs for society’s problems. Further, he’s suggested nursing home residents aren’t capable of voting and the bank he leads has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit accusing a senior living facility they partly own of elder abuse and wrongful death. The Wisconsin Dems and Grassroots Democrats are hosting phonebanks Thursday and Saturday to reelect Baldwin. Let’s sign up for them here.
GETTING IT DONE IN THE STATE LEGISLATURES
If we want to maximize our impact this election cycle, we can focus our efforts in state legislative races. These campaigns take far less total labor and money to win and often slip under the radar. This will be a big week ahead for efforts to flip the Arizona House and Senate and break the Republican supermajority in North Carolina. We can join a virtual volunteer rally Thursday and help with phonebanks Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We can also check out the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee’s Mobilize page for actions near us. Finally, we can use Oath to split a donation between the 10 legislative races they and The States Project have calculated are most likely to be tipping points.
SPANISH SPEAKERS WANTED FOR CALLS IN HOUSE RACE
The California 22nd is one of the most diverse House districts in the country. It is also one of the most Democratic leaning still represented by a Republican, Rep. David Valadao – Biden won here 55.3-42.3% in 2020 and the Cook Partisan Voter Index rates the district D+5. Democrats are rallying behind former California Assemblyman Rudy Salas in this crucial race for House control. Grassroots Democrats HQ is hosting Spanish language phonebanks in to this district on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and they are looking for bilingual volunteers. If we speak Spanish, we can sign up here.
KEEP AWARE OF VOTER INTIMIDATION AND OUR VOTER REGISTRATION
We’ve heard about tactics that will be used to muck up the voting process this fall. Whether it is actual voter purges like in Texas, or voter intimidation like in Pennsylvania, we need to be vigilant in maintaining an awareness of what is happening with our voter registration and how to respond when we are made aware of voter intimidation or other fraud. Let’s check our voter registration here and learn what to do about voter intimidation/fraud. Â
