CELEBRATING LABOR DAY… ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL
Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer and an excuse for a cookout. This holiday is about honoring the workers who built this country and the labor unions that organize and sacrifice to make sure those workers get their fair share. Let’s mark the occasion this Labor Day weekend by committing our support to one of the many ballot initiatives supporting union organizers and working people up for a vote this November, donating to or volunteering with:· AK: Better Jobs for Alaska as they fight to secure a higher minimum wage and paid sick leave with Ballot Measure One
· AZ: Raise the Wage Arizona as they oppose Proposition 138, a deceptive Republican-led effort to lower wages for tipped workers
· CA: One Fair Wage California as they work for an $18 minimum wage with Proposition 32
· MA: Drivers Demand Justice as they aim to secure union and collective bargaining rights for gig work drivers with Question Three
· MA: One Fair Wage Massachusetts as they push to pass Question Five, bringing tipped employees under the minimum wage
· MO: Missourians for Healthy Families & Fair Wages in their campaign for a higher minimum wage and paid sick leave with Proposition A
· NE: Paid Sick Leave for Nebraskans and their efforts on the Paid Sick Leave Initiative
KEEP ALASKA BLUE
One of the biggest flips of last cycle was Mary Peltola winning Alaska’s at-large seat for the Democrats. This remains the most Republican-leaning district we currently hold in the House, and it’s being heavily targeted. Protecting it could be crucial to taking the House back… and Rep. Peltola would swing her state’s vote to Kamala Harris in the unlikely event of an Electoral College tie. We’ve seen a major shakeup in this race just since last week’s primary, with Trump- and National Republican Congressional Committee-endorsed Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom dropping out, leaving controversial businessman Nick Begich as the GOP’s leading candidate in a top-four, ranked choice race. The Congresswoman took more than 50% of the vote in the all-party primary, and while her opponents have been maneuvering she’s been busy introducing legislation to expand access to school meals during the summer months. Let’s help her out! We can sign up to make calls, especially if we have time later in the day, here.
TEXT TO BRING IN NEW VOTERS
We’re running out of days to get new voters registered in time to make their voices heard in November. (Check out the deadlines in your state here.) Field Team Six is doing a major push in September to reach as many people as possible by text and get them engaged in this election. We can sign up to help Thursdays and Saturdays this month here.
HELP STUDENTS STUDYING ABROAD GET THEIR BALLOTS IN
If we know someone who will be studying abroad this fall, we can direct them to students.votefromabroad.org. This website has a one-page form that students can fill out and (in most states) email to election officials. Ballots arrive by email as early as September 21st, which gives students enough time to send the ballot back by postal mail in those states that require it. And 30 states have online options for ballot returns. Let’s spread the word about this site.
ADD THE ELECTION PROTECTION HOTLINE TO OUR CONTACTS
“The national, nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition is made up of more than 100 local, state, and national partners. We work year-round to advance and defend the right to vote.” If we encounter any questions about voting, or obstacles to casting our ballot, it’s great to have the Election Protection hotline number in our contacts. The hotline’s trained, knowledgeable volunteers will help us exercise our right to vote. If we speak English, let’s add 866-687-8683 to our cell phone contacts. There are numbers for Spanish, Asian, and Arabic speakers as well.
Thanks for featuring the students.votefromabroad.org site! I'm at a voter registration drive for students at the American University of Rome and we've registered 85 study abroad students so far! The students are on fire!!! They want to vote!!
