Donald Trump has told America the federal government can’t afford to make child care or health care cheaper, but apparently there’s plenty of money available for the important things… like rewarding his foot soldiers. The president has agreed to a settlement with an IRS commissioner he can fire, dropping his $10 billion lawsuit in exchange for a $1.7 billion slush fund to “compensate” the henchmen who committed crimes for his benefit, along with permanently barring the IRS from investigating his or his family’s taxes.
The beneficiaries could include the nearly 1,600 people charged with attacking the Capitol to overturn the results of the election on January 6th. The funds would be doled out by a commission with no transparency requirements, whose members would be appointed by Trump’s attorney general and could be removed by Trump at will. And the settlement came just days ahead of a potential ruling by a federal judge dismissing the suit entirely.
This is a theft from the American taxpayers, playing out right in the open. The White House is going to use our money to pay off himself and the thugs who committed political violence on his behalf. There will certainly be legal challenges ahead, but as Rep. Jamie Raskin has pointed out Congress has power over spending, which means they can stop it from going forward. 🗣️ Let’s reach out to our reps and demand they prevent a single penny of our money from being used for Trump’s slump fund, starting with supporting amendments to the ICE-CBP funding bill to do just that. We can find scripts and email language to use below, or text SIGN PMLDMK to 50409 to send this message directly via Resistbot. 🗣️
UPDATE, 5/27: STATE-LEVEL EFFORTS
New York State Assemblymember Alex Bores and State Senator Mike Gianaris have proposed what Bores dubbed the “Anti-Insurrectionist Act,” taxing any payoffs Trump gives to New York residents at 100%. They’re aiming for a vote on it as soon as next week. Similar proposals are coming in New Jersey from State Senator Andrew Zwicker and Illinois from State Rep. Bob Morgan, and California Governor Gavin Newsom endorsed the concept as well.
This is sure to face legal challenges if passed, but so of course will the bribes themselves. We should be willing to fight to keep our money out of the hands of these thugs. 🗣️ Let’s reach out to our state legislators and governors in support of taxing payoffs to insurrectionists. We can find call scripts to use here and email language below. 🗣️
UPDATE, 6/8: NEW PUSH IN THE HOUSE AGAINST TRUMP’S CORRUPT DEAL
Trump’s team very much wants us to think his slush fund is dead, and they got a number of headlines last week to that effect. It’s not. The President has already made noise about reviving it, and the Justice Department is looking for alternate ways to pay off the MAGA foot soldiers with taxpayer money. But their media blitz was enough to quiet the brief show of outrage on the right – last week, Republicans mustered enough votes to kill every amendment to the ICE/CBP funding bill aimed at blocking it. And as of now there haven’t been serious efforts to challenge the immunity from the IRS Trump’s own government gave him and his family.
On the House side, we’re seeing a few new efforts to put a stake in the heart of this corruption. Rep. Jamie Raskin has introduced the Block Lawless Agreements and Nullify Corrupt Handouts and Emoluments (BLANCHE) Act, which would ban sitting presidents for entering into settlements with the federal government for money damages and require judicial review of any agreement to grant the President this sort of super pardon. And Reps. Tom Suozzi and Brian Fitzpatrick plan to launch a discharge petition this week to force a floor vote on a bill blocking the slush fund. 🗣️ Let’s reach out to our reps and tell them we want to see them co-sponsor the BLANCHE Act and sign on to this discharge petition ASAP. We can find call scripts and email language below or text SIGN PCSNKV to 50409 to send them this message directly via Resistbot. 🗣️

Hi, my name is _________, and I’m a constituent from (city, zip). (If voicemail, leave street address).
The president can’t be allowed to use our taxpayer dollars for his personal piggy bank, or give himself and his family a super-pardon for their crimes. This settlement is blatant corruption, and it needs to be stopped.
(AS OF 6/11):
The White House is pretending they’re backing down on this theft, but the Justice Department is already looking for new ways to make the payoffs. And they’re holding firm on claiming immunity for the Trumps. Congress needs to take action, immediately.
(HOUSE ONLY):
Please sign on to the Suozzi-Fitzpatrick discharge petition to force a vote on their bill blocking Trump’s slush fund for his foot soldiers. And please co-sponsor Rep. Raskin’s BLANCHE Act to ban this sort of self-dealing for good.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

The President of the United States sued the government he runs and crafted a settlement with agency heads he can fire to give him $1.7 billion of our money he can use to reward his allies and foot soldiers. And all while he’s telling us we can’t afford food assistance or cheaper health care! He’s also given himself and his family a super-pardon for tax crimes, once again putting himself above the law.
This is open corruption, a president using taxpayer funds as a personal piggy bank and ensuring he can get away with his crimes. This is money going from hard-working Americans to enrich the thugs who beat law enforcement with flagpoles and fire extinguishers to try to overturn an election. Pay-offs would be doled out by a commission with zero transparency requirements, whose members would be appointed by Trump’s own attorney general and could be removed by him at will. If we saw this in another country, we know exactly what we’d call it.
Under bipartisan pressure, the White House has started to pretend it’s not moving forward with the slush fund. But we’re already seeing reports the Justice Department is looking for alternate pathways for these payoffs, and the immunity deal is still in place. Congress must seize this moment and pass a measure to permanently block the use of a single penny for these payoffs.
(WITH HOUSE MEMBERS, ADD):
Please sign on to the Suozzi-Fitzpatrick discharge petition to force a vote on their bill blocking this theft from the taxpayers. And please co-sponsor Rep. Raskin’s BLANCHE Act to ban this sort of self-dealing for good.

New York legislators are refusing to accept this crooked deal. They’ve proposed an Anti-Insurrectionist Act, taxing any bribes out of this fund to state residents at 100%. This sort of measure should be passed in our state as soon as possible. If Congress won’t stop us from being robbed, it’s up to our legislators and governors to recover our money.

I’m afraid my call did not follow the script and I sounded pretty angry but as a lawyer five miles from Rep Bost’s office, I did express my outrage at the absolute corruption of this double dealing and my disdain that congress seems to have no problem with the new state of lawlessness Trump has created.
I’m definitely going to call about this. How is his party not screaming bloody murder about this? They are ALL COMPLICIT!!!
