ELECTIONS DON’T TAKE HOLIDAYS
We have a holiday weekend coming up (wishing a blessed Easter to those who celebrate and hope all of our Jewish subscribers enjoyed their matzoh ball soup as much as I did), which means it’s going to be a little complicated doing our last stretch of get-out-the-vote in Tuesday’s elections.
Wisconsin is going to the polls to select a new supreme court justice. A victory for Chris Taylor would grow the liberal majority to 5-2, a strong position for litigation about voting rights, challenges to the state’s gerrymandered maps and electoral challenges during the upcoming midterms and presidential election. In northwest Georgia, voters are set to pick a replacement for Marjorie Taylor Greene, with Democratic nominee retired general Shawn Harris facing an uphill climb against Trump’s pick prosecutor Clayton Fuller.
There’s going to be a shortage of volunteers and a lot of folks who will be hard to reach out to, so we’re going to need to do some extra work. Let’s help Taylor and Harris get their folks to the polls:

TRUMP/MAGA BUDGET PUTS 446 HOSPITALS AT RISK – HERE’S WHERE THEY ARE
The corporations and the billionaires have been the big winners from Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” with corporate taxes down $65 billion and Amazon, Meta, Palantir and Big Pharma among the largest beneficiaries. The losers? Regular Americans who need health care. A new report from Public Citizen has identified 446 hospitals at heightened risk of closing or deducing services thanks to the MAGA Murder Budget’s Medicaid cuts. This includes 196 in red congressional districts. These facilities together cared for more than 6.6 million patients in 2024.

PROTECT AT-RISK VOTERS WITH VOTERIDERS TONIGHT AT 7PM
Trump’s newest effort to hijack our elections is going to face immediate legal challenges and will almost certainly be struck down. (As election law expert Rick Hasen points out, it’s also impossible to implement before November even if it’s upheld.) But he’s creating serious confusion about what it will take for people to cast their ballots while right-wingers at the state level are setting up more obstacles to the polling place, creating a toxic mix of bad law and misinformation to suppress our votes.
VoteRiders is fighting back, contacting at-risk voters to make sure they know what they need to do to ensure their ballots count. ✍🏼 Tonight, they’re bringing folks together at 7PM ET to write letters to Georgians and North Carolinians with essential information on how to vote. 🗣️ Trump’s election conspiracy propaganda also may be setting the stage for his direct interference in the midterms. Let’s push our state legislators to act, starting with demanding they pass a no-ICE-at-the-polls law and get election administrators the resources they need to deal with any disruptions. 🗣️
A RESOLUTION ON THE SHUTDOWN, A SCRAMBLE FOR RECONCILIATION
Republicans finally managed to get on the same page with their shutdown strategy yesterday, with Trump weighing in publicly in favor of a bill funding all of Homeland Security except ICE and some of CBP and Mike Johnson following his lead. This essentially is the arrangement the ranking Dem on the House Appropriations Committee, Rosa DeLauro, proposed right from the beginning. The GOP will aim to fund the deportation machine – possibly for the remaining three years of Trump’s term – through the reconciliation process, avoiding the filibuster and the need to address Democratic demands for an end to ICE terror. Trump wants the bill on his desk by June 1st.
It won’t be that easy. Republicans have also discussed including supplemental appropriations for the Iran War in a reconciliation bill, and it’s not clear they have the votes for $200 billion. There are a number of other measures various gangs of Republicans would like to see included, which could require a lot of wheeling and dealing. And many GOPers want additional funding to be funded for, which means they’ll need to agree on specific programs to cut or taxes to raise.
For now, the best thing we can do is make sure Congress understands our bottom line hasn’t changed – especially if we’re represented by Republicans. 🗣️ Let’s let them know we want them to oppose any cuts to health care or other programs that help regular Americans to pay for abducting our neighbors or Trump’s war of choice. 🗣️
STOP ICE WAREHOUSE DETENTION NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION APRIL 25TH
Trump and Miller thought if they moved fast enough, they could set up a network of human warehouses too fast for us to mobilize. They were wrong. Activists and local officials have worked together to block their plans in community after community, with eight deals scuttled, multiple lawsuits blocking further progress, and in Social Center, Georgia they’ve put a lock on the water meter. Now with a new Homeland Security secretary in place further purchases are paused, and we need to press our advantage.
The Detention Watch Network, Public Citizen, The Workers Circle and other organizations are calling for a national day of action to stop ICE warehouse detention on April 25th. They’ll provide a full organizer toolkit, planning guide and support for hosts. 🙋🏼♀️ If we’re interested, we can find more information on hosting an event in our community here. 🙋🏼

NJ - TELL SENATORS TO PASS OUR OWN VOTING RIGHTS ACT
The state assembly just passed the John R. Lewis Empowerment Act of New Jersey, and now it advances to the Senate. The bill, among other things, would create a Division of Voting Rights and also create a preclearance process for municipalities with a history of voter discrimination or intimidation. 🗣️ Let’s tell our state senators to pass the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act ASAP. We can find language and a tool from the ACLU here. 🗣️
