DAYS AWAY FROM A SENATE VOTE ON CLARITY ACT
With the legislative calendar running short, Republican leadership is making its priorities known – and no surprise, they’re not focused on doing anything for regular Americans. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has promised we’ll see a vote before they leave for recess at the end of next week on the Clarity Act, a crypto “regulation” bill that would do little to stop Trump, members of his family and his administration, or members of Congress themselves from profiting off this industry, even with new fig leaf ethics provisions backed by the White House. (Incredibly, they’re asking us to trust this Department of Justice to crack down on the president’s profiteering.)
The failure to address the blatant corruption happening before our eyes isn’t even the worst part of the Clarity Act. This legislation puts investors at greater risk by weakening safeguards, undercuts the SEC and overrules state-level consumer fraud protections – it’s going to be much harder for regulators to stop the next wave of fraud before people lose their money. It hinders investigations into money-laundering. It lets billionaires and industry insiders write weaker rules for themselves while risky digital asset products get pushed further into the financial system, including into our pensions and retirement savings. In short: it’s great for the wealthy and terrible for the rest of us.
Thune will need the support of at least seven Democrats to break the filibuster to get this legislation to the floor. (Even if it passes, it would need to be reconciled with the House-passed version of the bill). 🗣️ Let’s make sure we’re reaching out to our senators to tell them we want them to oppose cloture for the Clarity Act. SIX DAYS UNTIL FINAL VOTE ON RIGHT-WING POWER GRABS IN KANSAS, MISSOURI
We’re down to the final stretch in fighting efforts by the conservatives and billionaires to remove checks on their power in two states, with votes coming this Tuesday, August 4th. As we speak, folks are making the decision on whether to allow folks like Kris Kobach and the Koch network to impose partisan elections on the Kansas Supreme Court (and undermine reproductive freedom in the process) and whether to make it far, far harder to pass citizen-initiated ballot initiatives in the Show Me State.

DEADLINE TODAY TO OBJECT TO FCC TARGETING OF ABC
ABC is showing some admirable public fight against the Federal Communications Commission’s targeting of the network, explicitly acting in defense of the First Amendment. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr HAS ordered them to apply early for renewal of the licenses for their eight broadcast TV stations after Trump got mad at a Jimmy Kimmel joke, and they’ve issued an urgent call to audiences to weigh in on his interference.
