STAND UP FOR DOCTORS LIKE MARGARET DALEY CARPENTER
In Texas, because they are afraid of the law, doctors are allowing their patients to die rather than provide them with the abortion care they need. Contrast that with New York Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter, a co-founder of the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, who is being sued by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for sending abortion pills to a 20-year-old Texas woman who was nine week pregnant. Let’s:
Learn more about Dr. Carpenter by reading her bio.
Consider donating to her abortion access organization.
If we’re doctors, consider becoming an abortion “shield provider”—info here.
Tell our state legislators and governors that we want them to pass abortion shield laws like those in California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, which explicitly protect providers if a patient is out of state.
SENATE DEMOCRATS MUST KEEP CONFIRMING JUDGES
While Biden has now come close to appointing as many judges as Trump appointed in his first term, any judicial vacancy that is not fulfilled by the time Congress adjourns its final session this year will be in Trump’s hands. Indivisible is launching an all-hands-on-deck effort to continue to put pressure on the Senate to confirm as many judges as possible. We can use their link here, or simply call our Democratic Senators and ask them to prioritize filling judicial vacancies with fair-minded people who will be among the few left in a position to save our democracy when Trump takes office.
TELL BIDEN: EMPTY FEDERAL DEATH ROW
In addition to former and current DAs and other prosecutors, a group of 130 organizations, including the US Conference of Bishops, the ACLU, Brennan Center for Justice, and The Sentencing Project, are appealing to President Biden to commute the sentences of the 40 people currently on federal death row. In their letter, they commend Biden, applauding his "actions to repudiate capital punishment… imposing a moratorium on executions for those sentenced to death, and… publicly calling for an end to the use of the death penalty” and urge him to take this next step in line with his values. Biden granted very few pardons through much of his term, but last week took a huge step in issuing blanket clemency to those placed on home confinement during the pandemic, the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history. Let’s all write to Biden to thank him for last week’s actions and encourage him to commute these sentences before Trump, who wants to expand the use of the death penalty, assumes office. We do so directly here or text “SIGN PONUOO” to 50409 to send this message via Resistbot.
JOIN A LOCAL WORKING FAMILIES PARTY “WOLF PACK”
We won’t be giving up any fight just because the odds are against us, but we are likely to take some hard defeats in the months ahead at the national level. Our best opportunities for victory will be from local organizing, both for better policies now and for building power for the long run. The Working Families Party has been looking to encourage this sort of effort with its Wolf Pack program, helping us connect with folks in our area interested in doing the work. They are hosting an orientation for folks interested in starting or joining one of these local teams TONIGHT at 7:00PM Eastern, and again on Saturday, January 11th at 12:00PM Eastern and Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00pm Eastern. Let’s sign up to attend and learn more here.
JOIN THIRD ACT TO CONTINUE THE FIGHT FOR CLIMATE ACTION
We do not have four years to waste when it comes to climate change, and our activism must continue even in the face of Trump. Third Act, a group founded by the legendary Bill McKibben that organizes older people to use their power for climate action, will be holding a virtual welcome call for new volunteers TODAY at 7:30PM Eastern. Let’s check out this organization and sign up for the call here.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
PA – TELL JOHN FETTERMAN TO SAY NO TO HEGSETH
Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) declined to rule out supporting Fox News host Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense last week, pointing out that “there haven’t been any formal charges” against him over his allegedly raping his handler and citing a lot of supportive calls into his office asking him to sit down with Trump nominees. If Hegseth supporters are making their voices heard, we must as well. Let’s contact Senator Fetterman to remind him that only there are only arrests in 50 out of every 1,000 sexual assault cases and encourage him to review in detail the horrifying police report filed by Hegseth’s accuser. Let’s further push him to vote no over Hegseth’s alleged sexual harassment and rape, on-the-job drunkenness and financial mismanagement, disrespect for women and LGBTQ people in uniform, extremist ties and views and lack of experience.
thank you for today's actions. after writing Senator Fetterman, I wrote my own Washington State senators and urged them to pressure Fetterman to vote NO on Hegseth's nomination.
