TRANS KIDS ARE BEING TARGETED BY THIS ADMINISTRATION
Prices are rising, unemployment is at its highest level in four years, the regime is dragging us towards an unnecessary and unpopular war, and we’re set for a massive release of information on Jeffrey Epstein tomorrow. The administration is looking for scapegoats, and they are turning once again to their standard tactic of targeting trans kids.
Yesterday we saw the House pass H.R. 3492, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s bill that would criminalize doctors for providing consensual, evidence-based transition-related care, by a 216-211 vote. Today they’re considering H.R. 498, Dan Crenshaw’s effort to block federal Medicaid funds from covering transition-related care for adolescents. But since both of these efforts are set to stall out in the U.S. Senate (find language to use for calls here), Trump is charging forward on another path, with RFK Jr. announcing proposed regulatory action to imperil access to gender-affirming care for kids, even in states where it’s legal. They intend to put Crenshaw’s bill on the books and cut off federal Medicaid and Medicare funding from hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to children.
These rules will need to go through the standard rule-making process before becoming legal and will certainly be challenged in court. But the chilling effect on health care providers deciding whether to continue offering gender-affirming care is likely to be substantial, and the message being sent to the entire trans community is clear and frightening. They need us to stand with them, and that includes material support. Here’s some steps we can take right now:
Donate to Trans Lifeline, a peer support network for trans people that runs a crisis hotline of their own which will be all the more important if Trump successfully eliminates services for LGBTQ youth through 988
Donate to the Trans Continental Pipeline, which helps trans people relocate from unsafe communities in the United States to Colorado, where they have more legal protection
Donate to one of these trans-led mutual aid funds or the Trans Income Project, providing direct support to trans folks in need
Donate to fund Distribute Aid’s harm reduction toolkits, which provide medical equipment for trans people taking injection-based gender affirming hormone therapy
This is also a good moment to reach out to LGBTQIA+ organizations in our community and see what how we might be able to help them. We can find one in our state here.
MIKE LEE WANTS TO MAKE IT EASIER TO SELL OFF OUR NATIONAL PARKS
The threats to our public lands in the U.S. Senate don’t end with Steve Pearce’s nomination to lead the Bureau of Land Management. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), who attempted to force a sell-off of public lands into the MAGA Murder Budget, is at it again. He’s proposed an amendment to the Interior-Environment appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2026 that would end protections that prevent the president from selling off our national parks.
We built a coalition to stop Mike Lee from attacking public lands before, and we’re going to do it again. Let’s reach out to our senators to tell them to oppose Lee Amendment #3972 and ensure no appropriations bill passes with a similar provision. We can find language to use from the National Parks Conservation Association here.
ENFORCING FAIR HOUSING LAWS
Work on other Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations is approaching crucial points, too. The House is pushing forward with a bill that would eliminate crucial funding for local fair housing organizations, likely leading to many of them closing their doors. These are the community-based groups that we count on to stand up when when housing providers attempt to shut out the most vulnerable, and their work is even more important now with Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development dramatically reducing their efforts to enforce the law.
The National Fair Housing Alliance has built an email tool for us to reach out to our reps and urge them to fully funding fair housing infrastructure. Let’s check it out and put it to work here.
LEGISLATORS CAN STEP UP AGAINST THE SECRET POLICE
Across America, a secret police force is operating in plain sight. ICE and other federal agents are throwing people into unmarked vans, lurking outside of schools, and attacking people in Home Depot parking lots. This echoes some of the darkest moments in American history, and we should take a lesson from how folks back then responded. Free state governments stepped up to offer what protections they could against fugitive slave laws. Now it’s time for blue states to do the same.
Our friends at the National Immigration Law Center have created a tool to make it easy for us to contact our state legislators and urge them to help counter secret police tactics in our streets - barring law enforcement from obscuring their faces, limiting collaboration with enforcement that violates civil rights, establishing safe places in state, city or county facilities where access requires a judicial warrant and creating a hotline and online portal for the public to report harms from federal deployments or immigration enforcement. Let’s put it to work here and share it with our networks.
