PROTECTING THE IMMIGRANTS WE CAN RIGHT NOW
The Senate’s three current Hispanic Democrats are calling on President Biden to take immediate action to safeguard those immigrants and refugees he can before leaving office. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) have sent a letter to the White House urging Biden to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for several refugee communities like Salvadorans and Nicaraguans and expand it to include new ones, like refugees from Ecuador. They are also pushing the administration to quickly process renewal applications for programs including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA). Let’s add our voices to their call and contact the White House asking the President to extend and expand TPS protections and speed up DACA processing while he still can. We can also push our senators to make a similar request. Finally, let’s prepare for the fights after Trump takes office by checking out this spreadsheet of local immigrant support groups and getting involved with one near us.
TELL CONGRESS TO SAVE TELEHEALTH BEFORE DECEMBER 31
Telehealth benefits are at risk of expiring at the end of this month, potentially leaving millions of Americans — especially those with disabilities — without critical access to medical care. For many, telehealth isn't just convenient; it's a lifeline for accessing prescriptions and specialist care when travel is impossible. A bipartisan coalition is urging Congress to act swiftly by extending telemedicine policies through an emergency measure and passing several key bills, including the Telehealth Modernization Act (HR7623/S3967) and the Connect for Health Act (HR4819/S2016), to make pandemic-era flexibilities permanent. Let's call our representatives or send them a pre-filled email with this tool and, if we choose, share our personal stories to encourage them to act.
URGE BIDEN, CONGRESS TO LIMIT THE PRESIDENT’S ABILITY TO USE THE MILITARY DOMESTICALLY
Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are calling on President Biden to issue a directive that would only allow use of the military within U.S. borders when state or local governments called for help, a move that could at least complicate Trump’s efforts to use our troops domestically. Let’s tell our Senators to join this call, and also contact the White House and urge President Biden to do this. We can also use this Resistbot petition to urge all our members of Congress to give the Insurrection Act the reforms it badly needs by texting “SIGN PRHFET” to 50409.
EMERGE OFFERING CANDIDATE TRAINING
Now, more than ever, it’s time to be the change we want to see in the world. We need more Democratic women in office, and Emerge is there to help make it happen. They’ve trained more than 6,000 women, won 81% of their primaries in 2024, and help elect over 1,200 candidates, including Congresswoman and Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, Governor Katie Hobbs and Representative Lucy McBath. Right now, they’re offering qualified candidates in New Jersey and Connecticut who want to run for office an intensive six-month 70-hour training program that can give us the inspiration, information and tools we need to run and win! If selected as a program member, we’ll also meet campaign and election experts, hear from successful women office holders, expand our political network and join Emerge’s national network of alumnae, board and advisory council members. We can learn more about Emerge’s Candidate Training and apply here, but we must act soon - the deadline for New Jersey is December 29th, and Connecticut’s is January 29th. We can also consider a donation to support their work.
ABORTION RIGHTS IN NEVADA NEED TO PASS ONE MORE ELECTION
Nevada Question 6, the Right to Abortion Initiative, is an effort to pass an amendment to enshrine reproductive rights in the Nevada state constitution. It needs to win in two elections to be adopted. It has passed its first hurdle, getting 64.36% of the popular vote in November. Now, we need to do it again on November 3, 2026. Whether we live in Nevada or not, let’s plan to do what we can to help protect reproductive freedom there. Let’s sign up to stay informed.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
MA - FIGHT THE EXTREMIST SECOND AMENDMENT BALLOT QUESTION
Last summer, Massachusetts enacted a robust, modernized gun safety law. The extremist anti-gun control lobby has succeeded in putting a ballot question to voters intended to repeal it, which will appear on the 2026 November ballot. The Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence is already making plans to protect the law and galvanize voters to go to the polls and vote YES to uphold it. If we’re in Massachusetts, let’s sign up to receive emails from the Coalition so we can be part of their efforts. Not in Massachusetts? Help enact sensible gun laws and policies where you live by getting involved with a local chapter of Moms Demand Action.
Thank you! I believe in these causes, and was able to take action based on your alerts and recommendations. Together we can write a better future for ourselves, the nation and the world.
It bothers me a lot to be going backwards. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/we-are-going-back?r=3m1bs
