INDIANA STATE SENATE TO VOTE ON MID-DECADE GERRYMANDER THIS WEEK - RALLY SUPPORT TO STOP IT
As anticipated, last Friday the Indiana House of Representatives easily passed HB 1032, their state’s version of the Trump push to gerrymander congressional districts to rig the House race in 2026. The GOP is attempting to erase two Democratic seats so they can avoid being held accountable for their failures. Now the bill is being considered before the state senate, where despite political and physical threats by MAGA we may well have the votes to block the unfair maps. Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray and half the GOP caucus are not on board. A vote should come later this week.
The pressure from Trump and his cronies is on, and we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to keep their spines stiff. Those of us who are in Indiana can reach out to our state senators and urge them to vote no - we can find their contact info here and language to work off of from Common Cause Indiana here. And all of us can join Common Cause to phonebank into the state TONIGHT and Thursday at 6PM ET to urge more voters to speak up - we can sign up to join here.
MEANWHILE ON CAPITOL HILL, HOUSE SET TO UNDERMINE CORE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS
In the coming days, we anticipate the House of Representatives will hold floor votes on the PERMIT Act (H.R. 3898), which would critically weaken the Clean Water Act, and the SPEED Act (H.R. 4776), which would undermine the National Environmental Policy Act.
The PERMIT Act is a gift to industry at the expense of clean drinking water. It excludes vast areas of waters from environmental protection and allows corporate polluters to release forever chemicals into waterways without telling regulators, frees up factory farms to discharge toxic waste and pesticides, and limits our options for blocking fossil fuel projects and seeking justice in the courts.
The SPEED Act is ostensibly a bipartisan compromise that will allow more pipelines and more transmission lines for wind and solar, the sort of permitting reform bill clean and dirty energy advocates both argue is necessary. But with an administration that is actively blocking green energy, in practice it will only help fossil fuels. Thanks to our efforts, moderate and progressive Democrats have come together to say no to this legislation, but Republicans were able to force it through committee regardless. Now conservatives are registering their disapproval as well.
Even if these bills are able to clear the House, united Democratic opposition and any Republican aisle-crossers will help us set the stage to kill them in the Senate. Let’s make sure we make our voices heard with our members of Congress. We can find talking points and email tools to use to oppose the SPEED Act via Climate Hawks Vote here and to object to both bills from Food & Water Watch here.
TRUMP WANTS TO SEND BURMESE REFUGEES BACK INTO A WAR ZONE
Trump’s deportation machine has set its sights on yet another group of folks in this country legally. Just before Thanksgiving, the Department of Homeland Security announced it was ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) programs for 4,000 refugees from Myanmar, claiming that “the situation has improved enough that it is safe for Burmese citizens to return home.” The nation remains ruled by a military dictatorship with a history of genocidal campaigns against minority groups like the Rohingya and torn by civil war, and is also still recovering from an earthquake in March. The UN estimates more than 3.5 million people have been displaced since 2021, and 1.5 million have fled the country.
Activist groups are crying foul and urging Capitol Hill to step in. We can join them in contacting our members of Congress to push them to condemn this decision publicly, reach out to the administration to urge its reversal, and support legislation restoring TPS for these refugees. We can find language to use and a tool to send emails courtesy of the Campaign for a New Myanmar here.
GETTING UP TO SPEED ON THE MIDTERMS WITH ACTIVATE AMERICA - WEBINAR TOMORROW
With the special election in the Tennessee Seventh District over, we can officially being turning our full attention to the 2026 midterms. After a year of watching Speaker Mike Johnson use the House of Representatives as a rubber stamp for whatever Trump wanted, we have a great shot at taking control back, blocking some of the worst MAGA policies, giving us leverage in future spending fights and allowing for crucial investigations and hearings to move forward.
The team at Activate America is gearing up for the work ahead, including holding a webinar tomorrow night at 8:30PM ET previewing this election cycle. They’ll be highlighting crucial races for the balance of power in Congress, taking a deep dive on the impact of redistricting efforts across the country, and looking at some recent polls that give us a sense of where the country is at right now, along with discussing how to get plugged in to their volunteer efforts. Let’s sign up to learn more here.
GIVING THE GIFT OF PBS TO OUR LOVED ONES AND THE WHOLE COMMUNITY
Conservatives have finally succeeded in their decades-long effort to defund NPR and PBS, and it’s starting to take its toll on station operations. While we fight to restore funding in Congress, public broadcasting also needs our support right now. And what better occasion than the holidays to give the gift of PBS? Many stations allow donors to gift a membership to another person, and even include it as an option when donating via their website - each station has their own process. Let’s get more information on this gift idea here and learn more from our local PBS station here.
