#SAVEOURSERVICES DAY OF ACTION FOR FEDERAL WORKERS TODAY
Trump’s mass firings are well underway in the federal government, and the costs will be enormous. We’re going to be less prepared to fight wildfires; it will be harder for veterans to access mental health care; as the bird flu continues to raise the price of eggs we are losing many of the people responsible for responding to it; the list goes on. Today, federal workers worried about their jobs and their vital work are pushing back. The Federal Unionists Network is holding a Save Our Services Day of Action, with more than two dozen rallies scheduled across the country. They’re also encouraging folks to post #SaveOurServices selfies on social media wearing red, white and/or blue and holding a sign about how we benefit from federal services. Let’s take part in the social media action and try to make it to a rally near us today.
HELP SAVE THE CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION BUREAU BY SHARING STORIES
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has been highly effective since its creation in 2014, securing $21 billion in relief for millions of consumers. It has helped individuals by resolving unfair financial issues, such as eliminating unjust medical debt, preventing excessive overdraft fees, and correcting false past-due notices. By holding financial institutions accountable, the CFPB has provided essential protections for everyday consumers. Naturally the Trump Administration and its billionaire backers have stopped their work and taken steps to dismantle the agency. We can help protect the CFPB by sharing our stories of how their work helped us or encouraging others to share theirs. Our friends at
and Americans for Financial Reform will amplify these stories to show elected officials that there’s a political cost to ignoring the agency’s importance. If we’ve been aided by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, we can submit our stories here. (We can also share these stories on social media and with our members of Congress, and use these scripts to pressure our elected officials to keep the CFPB at work for us.)
#HANDSOFFSNAP
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a lifeline for more than 42 million low-income Americans. House Republicans have proposed $230 billion in budget cuts that will largely come from SNAP – that’s taking food off the table for working families, older adults, people with disabilities and children, and taking money out of local economies, all to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. The Food Research and Action Center is rallying those of us who care about feeding the hungry, better health care and supporting food retailers to tell our reps #HandsOffSNAP. Let’s:
Check out how many people in our congressional district benefit from SNAP using this tool from the Department of Agriculture.
Call our members of Congress to oppose SNAP cuts. We can use this script.
Message our members of Congress using this tool and sample language.
Help get #HandsOffSNAP trending by posting it on social media. We can find sample posts here.
Encourage any national, state or community-based organizations we are connected to to sign on to this letter pushing back against cuts to SNAP and child nutrition programs before February 28th. (h/t Deborah Stein)
WHY DOES ELON MUSK WANT OUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?
Elon Musk’s administrative coup continues to seize control of more and more of our government, and put each of us at more and more direct risk. Right now, he and his minions are pushing for access to the Integrated Data Retrieval System, which the IRS uses to retain personal tax information for every individual taxpayer, business and nonprofit in the country. This would be an incredible violation of our privacy, with Musk able to see our addresses, how much we earn, how much we owe, and even details related to child custody agreements. The acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration also stepped down this weekend after Musk’s henchmen demanded access to an internal data repository which includes our financial data, employment information, addresses, and the medical records of anyone who has applied for disability benefits. Musk would be able to use this data to target business rivals, those who criticize him or Trump, or anyone who happened to upset him. The DOGE team’s lack of security protocols also exposes us to identity theft and personal exposure. This cannot stand. Let’s contact our members of Congress, along with the IRS and the Social Security Administration, and demand to know what they are doing to keep our data safe and secure from Musk.
WE STILL STAND WITH UKRAINE
The Trump Administration has begun to make significant efforts on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and as predicted they do not bode well for our friends. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Putin’s foreign minister in Saudi Arabia about the war and U.S.-Russian relations – talks which Ukraine and European nations were excluded from. Secretary of Defense (and white nationalist accused rapist) Pete Hegseth has undermined our bargaining position by claiming it was “unrealistic” for Ukraine to reclaim its official borders, essentially conceding up front that Russia’s aggression will be rewarded, and the White House has increasingly pressured Ukraine for control of its rare mineral resources – without offering much in the way of security guarantees in return for this neocolonial arrangement. (President Trump himself is now bizarrely claiming Zelensky somehow started the Russian invasion of Ukraine.) They are reinforcing concerns that they intend to pressure Ukraine into handing Putin victory, which would come at the expense of freedom, democracy, global peace and U.S. national security interests. We need to make sure our leaders are aware we do not intend to abandon our ally quietly. Let’s take this moment to contact our members of Congress and urge them to vote for and insist on continued aid to Ukraine - we can use scripts and language here. We can also consider extending our personal support by contributing to Come Back Alive, which helps meet the needs of Ukrainians on the frontlines of the war.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
MA – MAKE POLLUTERS PAY, ACTIONAR TOMORROW
Environmental activists at the state level are starting to make progress at making sure the fossil fuel industry foots the bill to help us recover from climate damage and prepare our infrastructure for more in the future. In 2024, both Vermont and New York passed climate superfund laws that require their state’s largest carbon polluters to pay into an account that would be used for disaster prevention and cleanup – taking the burden off of regular folks and putting it on the corporations who profited from the crisis. Legislators led by Senator Jamie Eldridge and Reps. Steve Owens and Jack Lewis are working to bring “polluter pays” to Massachusetts next, introducing HD. 3369 and SD.1674. The Mass Power Forward coalition will be holding a webinar TOMORROW at 6:00pm on these bills and their efforts against utility profiteering and for environmental justice. Let’s sign up to learn more here. We can also reach out to our state legislators and Governor Healey in support of this legislation using language from this Resistbot petition, or text PQDLOO to 50409 to send it directly.
KEEPING AN EYE ON…
House recess events with Indivisible… Phonebank and postcard to hold our majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court… Colorado supermarket workers end strike after corporate agrees to return to bargaining, improve offer… Patel floor vote this week… support for Kentucky flood victims… keep distributing Know Your Rights cards… 9 days until economic blackout, respect the Latino Freeze…
We need to call out the fraud at every turn where we see it.
