TEXT FOR ABORTION RIGHTS IN THE SOUTH
Abortion rights will be on the ballot this November, both nationwide and in numerous states. One of the most crucial battlegrounds will be in Florida, where a ballot initiative could guarantee a bastion of reproductive rights for the South, easing access for millions of Americans – and help flip the state at the same time. The organizers at Floridians Protecting Freedom have set up textbanks we can help with at ANY time to turn out voters. Let’s do our part by joining in at flfree.link/text whenever is convenient for us, and we can sign up for more volunteer opportunities here.REJECT ACT THAT DENIES IMMIGRANT RIGHTS TO PALESTINIANS
While most of us may agree with the main provision of HR 6679, the “No Immigration Benefits for Hamas Terrorists Act,” which bars anyone who facilitated the October 7 attacks on Israelis from admission into the U.S., the bill goes farther by also including anyone who is a member of the PLO, the more moderate branch of Palestinian leadership, that many in the U.S. government are looking to as future leaders of Gaza and a Palestinian state. Since immigrant rights are already denied to members of terrorist groups as defined by the State Department’s List of Foreign Terrorist Groups, and Hamas is already on that list, there is no need for this bill. Extending this restriction to members of the PLO aims to dehumanize and criminalize people for being Palestinian, and sets the stage for more racist attacks, like the murder of a six-year old Palestinian boy in Chicago, and the shooting of three Palestinian students in Vermont. Let’s tell our MoCs to vote no on this dangerous bill.
HELP GATHER COVID STORIES
The Library of Congress launched the COVID-19 Archive Activation website, in collaboration with StoryCorps, to encourage all Americans to share their COVID-19 stories, or interview others about their pandemic experiences. Stories submitted through the Archive Activation website will be deposited into the collections of the American Folklife Center and made accessible at archive.StoryCorps.org. By creating a tool to collect and preserve Americans’ pandemic experiences, the Library of Congress is honoring those who lost loved ones to COVID-19, those who worked on the frontlines of the pandemic, and those who were, and continue to be, impacted during this unprecedented time in American history. The Center is inviting everyone interested to take part. Let’s make sure we take part and share this opportunity (details here) with those who have COVID stories that need to be remembered - especially the frontline and essential workers, medical professionals, emergency service workers, COVID survivors and longhaulers in our lives.
