LET’S THANK REPRESENTATIVE AL GREEN
The failed MAGA evidence-free bid to impeach, without real cause, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas may very well have succeeded if Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas hadn’t left his hospital bed to vote on the measure, resulting in a tie that killed it. Green, who was recovering from surgery, got permission from his doctors to go to the Capitol, accompanied by medical staff. He did it, he said, not because he was pressured by party leaders, but “because Secretary Mayorkas is a good man.” Let’s thank Rep Green for going above and beyond to stop this sham impeachment: 202-225-7508, or mail a postcard to him at 2347 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515.
SUPER TUESDAY PRIMARIES—LET’S GET READY TO VOTE
March 5, 2024, is Super Tuesday. This year, 17 states are holding presidential primaries or caucuses on this single day. If we are in Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa (Caucus), Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa (Democratic Caucus), Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, or Virginia, our primary election is March 5. Let’s get that date on our calendars and make sure we’re ready to vote.
EXTEND THE AFFORDABLE CONNECTIVITY PROGRAM
A program that has connected 23 million people to Broadband Internet, will expire in April or May, putting these households at risk of losing access to the Internet. S3565, The Affordable Connectivity Extension Act of 2024 is a bipartisan bill recently introduced in the Senate to address the problem. Let’s tell both our Senators and MoCs to pass legislation protecting affordable Internet access now.
VOYAGER SCHOLARSHIP FOR PUBLIC SERVICE
The Obama Foundation has opened applications for the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service. They are seeking college juniors for the two-year, leadership development and scholarship program. They “looking for young people from every corner of this country who share a curiosity about the world and the conviction to want to make positive change within it—just like the scholarship's founders. Students should have a passion for helping others, experience serving in or building community, and an expansive view of what’s possible through public service.” If we fit the demographics, or know someone who does, let’s learn more about this opportunity and apply.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
ALL (except IL) - STOP BOOK BANS IN OUR STATE VIA RESISTBOT
Now that the Illinois state-wide ban on book bans is now in effect, it is time to put pressure on other state legislatures. We know that book banning is on the rise nationwide as far-right players try to interrupt learning. Alan Unell, whose Substack, Healthcare Advocacy, is chock full of news, has created a Resistbot script that asks that our state's governor and state representatives and senators enact a law similar to the one in Illinois that prohibits book bans in public libraries or public schools. If we are new to Resistbot, we can learn more here. Let’s send that Resistbot message to our state leaders: https://resist.bot/petitions/PQZJOE
Thank you so much for including the book ban action, Susan!!
