DEMS TRY TO FORCE VOTE ON REAL SOLUTIONS FOR DREAMERS, TPS RECIPIENTS
We’re in the midst of one of the largest delegalizations of immigrants in our nation’s history. (354,000 Haitians and Syrians are likely to be stripped of legal status on Monday.) People who have lived in this country for years, who don’t know any other life, who are valued and beloved members of our community, are now at risk. And despite what right-wing propaganda insists, significant majorities of Americans believe there should be a route for them to make the United States their home for good. We need to make ourselves heard.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) has introduced a discharge petition to force a vote on the American Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 1589), legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship for 4.4 million immigrant young people, Dreamers and temporary protected status holders. This is the sort of broad-based solution that may be out of reach right now but that we need to keep building support for. We need 218 signatures from House members to bring it to the House floor, and since she rolled it out on Monday we’ve secured 209 – including two Republicans.
The folks at United We Dream are asking us to reach out to those reps not on the list and urge them to join us in the fight for deeply-needed and broadly popular change. 🗣️ Let’s see if our member of Congress is on board here and then use this tool to write them if they’re not. 🗣️
HOUSE GOP PRETENDS TO CARE ABOUT CORRUPTION
Regular Americans have made themselves clear: they’re tired of corruption from their politicians, and they want something done. Among the easiest and most common sense steps we could take is a ban on stock trading by members of the government. This Republican-controlled Congress is messing around rather than trying to get it done.
Yesterday, the House voted 232-198 to pass a congressional stock trading ban for the first time. GOP leadership elected to add a poison pill, cramming in restrictive voter ID laws from the SAVE Act, rather than allowing it to move forward cleanly. They also deliberately pushed forward a less aggressive version of the legislation – while H.R. 7008 stops members of Congress and their immediate family from buying new individual stocks while in office, it doesn’t require them to divest from stocks they own now, and does not address members of the executive branch at all.
🗣️ Let’s reach out to our members of Congress and tell them we want them to stop insider trading, not try to score political points on looking like they’re doing something. Let them know we want them to drop this distraction and bring a clean, comprehensive stock trading ban for government officials brought to the floor ASAP. We can use scripts from 5Calls here. 🗣️
THANKS, RFK JR: MEASLES CASES REACH HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE 1991
The Trump regime is making something great again, but it’s not America. A Johns Hopkins University tracker of state and local health data has found that with five months left in the year, we’ve already surpassed last year’s total number of measles cases in this country. We’re at a 35-year high, and we appear very much on track to lose our elimination status this fall.
More than 90% of infections are occurring among people who are unvaccinated or whose status is unknown. Antivax propaganda and policies are putting us in danger. American Families for Vaccines is organizing the pushback, mobilizing folks to advocate for science-based public health laws, promote accurate information, and support vaccine confidence and access in communities and among power brokers. 🫱🏾🫲🏼 If this is a cause close to our hearts, let’s check them out, get updates from them and connect with their state-level chapters to get to work. 🫱🏻🫲🏿
GOP DOUBLES DOWN ON ELECTION DENIAL IN ARIZONA PRIMARY
We now have our general election ballot filled out in Arizona, and in this purple state with two Democratic senators the GOP is choosing to moderate to appeal to swing voters. Just kidding! They’ve in fact put key players in the attempt to steal the state’s electoral votes in 2020 at the top of the ticket, nominating key coup co-conspirator Congressman Andy Biggs for governor against incumbent Katie Hobbs, state rep. Alexander Kolodin (who was sanctioned by the state bar for representing the fake electors) to challenge Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, and state senate president Warren Petersen (who led audits into Maricopa County’s elections) to try to unseat AG Kris Mayes.
Pushing these extremists forward raises the importance of a sweep in the Grand Canyon State, because we sure as heck don’t want these clowns overseeing the 2028 presidential race. But it also should make our changes of winning here and down the ballot stronger. 🙋🏾♀️ We can join phonebanks for the full slate Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays here, get updates on more opportunities from the Hobbs campaign here and find more actions on the Arizona Dems and coordinated campaign Mobilize pages here and here. 🙋🏻♀️
At the congressional level, Democrats selected their nominee in what could emerge as a quartet of flippable districts.
In the First District, being vacated by GOP gubernatorial loser Rep. David Schweikert, former state rep, ER physician and 2024 nominee Amish Shah looks to be the pick against former NFL kicker and Trump endorsee Jay Feely. Shah had a record of getting things done in the state legislature, passing more bills into law than any Arizona Democrat in the last decade. Shah only lost to Schweikert, a relative moderate, by less than 17,000 votes last cycle, and this is widely considered a top Democratic pickup opportunity. 🙋🏻♀️ We can sign up to volunteer with Dr. Shah here. 🙋🏾♀️
In the Fifth District, nurse and reproductive rights advocate Elizabeth Lee will be the Democratic nominee against former Pinal County sheriff Mark Lamb for the Republicans. She’s emphasized her experience in health care, and has endorsed Medicare For All, capping prescription drug prices, protecting access to medication abortion and expanding coverage for fertility treatments on the campaign trail. This is an R+10 district that Biggs used to represent, but it may ultimately turn competitive thanks to the GOP choice of Lamb. A Trump and Turning Point USA favorite who made a name for himself bashing immigrants, Lamb was subsequently revealed to have engaged in a pattern of sexual impropriety and misconduct, including threatening to use his power as sheriff to punish multiple women who threatened to out his behavior. 🙋🏻♀️ We can sign up to be part of Nurse Lee’s team here and check out her Mobilize page for upcoming opportunities to volunteer here. 🙋🏾♀️
We already knew former Marine and non-profit leader JoAnna Mendoza would take on Juan Ciscomani, one of the most vulnerable GOP House incumbents, in the Sixth District and that former Navajo Nation president Jonathan Nez will get a rematch against Freedom Caucus extremist and Elon Musk favorite right-wing extremist Eli Crane in the Second District. 🙋🏻 We can take a shift phonebanking for Mendoza on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons here and get on the list to volunteer for Nez here. 🙋🏾
TONIGHT AT 8PM: HOW TO CONNECT WITH IMMIGRANT JUSTICE ORGANIZATIONS NEAR US
The activist Lily Tomlin once said “I always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.” Words more people should live by, but we’d add an important follow-up step – checking out whether somebody near us is already doing something we haven’t heard about and could work with them on.
With ICE set to receive another $70 billion cash infusion to expand the detention camp archipelago, we need to be preparing for more surges into our neighborhoods. Fortunately, many communities now have a well-established infrastructure of immigrant defense. The trick for folks who want to get plugged in is finding it. Tonight at 8PM ET, Indivisible is holding a training session on community ecosystem mapping, a structured tool for identifying the folks doing the work and finding the gaps we might help fill. It’s a great way for folks who want to do more to find the best fit and for those of us who want to bring more people in to help them find theirs. 🏫 Let’s sign up to learn more this evening here. 🏫
⚙️ We can also start looking for groups to get involved with right now! We can find a directory of local rapid response networks that need our support here. ⚙️
