TAKING DOWN REPUBLICANS NATIONWIDE IN SPRING ELECTIONS
Tuesday’s first round of voting to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene in Congress ended with Democratic favorite former general Shawn Harris advancing to the runoff against Trump’s pick, prosecutor Clayton Fuller. Harris unfortunately did not much improve on his vote share from his campaign against MTG in 2024, capturing 37.4% of the vote, and the other two Dems in the field combined for 2.5% - Fuller will be a heavy favorite on April 7th. The good news is, he successfully kept this deep red seat vacant for at least a few more weeks. More encouraging is the outcome in New Hampshire, as Bobbi Boudman became the 10th Democrat to flip a legislative seat this cycle with a 52-48 margin in a jurisdiction that went 54% to Trump and where the GOP spent heavily.
So let’s keep our momentum going! We’ve got a number of key races still coming up this spring.
On March 24th, we’ve got a pair of legislative seats up for grabs in Florida. SD-14 is a Tampa-area seat that has a history of swinging back and forth, and Democratic veteran and union leader Brian Nathan is running against GOP State Rep. Josie Tomkow. HD-87 covers central Palm Beach County, and Dems have picked small business owner and public health expert Emily Gregory to go against Trump-endorsed town councilor Jon Maples. ☎️ We can phonebank for Brian Nathan THURSDAYS from 4-6PM ET here or anytime here, and sign up for shifts with Emily Gregory here. On April 7th, we’ll have a chance to lock up a progressive majority on the Wisconsin supreme court for years to come. Appeals court judge and former Planned Parenthood staffer Chris Taylor is running to flip a seat held by the retiring Rebecca Bradley and grow the liberal margin to 5-2. She’s up against conservative pick Maria Lazar. 🙋♀️ We can help get Chris Taylor over the line by taking phonebank shifts for volunteer recruitment Tuesdays and Wednesdays or reaching voters Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, along with postcarding with Activate America or Postcards to Voters. 🙋♀️
On April 16th, voters in the New Jersey 11th Congressional District will pick their next rep between Working Families Party pick and Abolish ICE progressive Analilia Mejia and the GOP’s former Randolph mayor Joe Hathaway. Mejia is the favorite in a district Kamala Harris won with 53%. However the margins in this one may get some attention as a test for the performance of an unapologetic left-wing candidate in a more closely-divided electorate. ☎️ We can take phonebank shifts for Analilia Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, and texting opportunities should be coming soon! ☎️
On April 21st, Virginia is holding a special election that will determine which congressional map they use in the midterms. If we’re able to pass a constitutional amendment, we can put into effect district lines that will position Democrats to win 10 of 11 House seats and counterbalance Trump’s efforts to redistrict his way to a majority. Finally on May 5th, folks in the Saginaw area will pick the next state senator for the 35th district. Harris carried the area by just 0.8% in 2024, and a Republican victory would give both parties 19 seats in the chamber. Firefighter, Marine Corps vet and union man Chedrick Greene, who is running on universal preschool and lowering health care and housing costs, is the Dem pick against MAGA lawyer Jason Tunney, who wants to make it easier to union-bust in Michigan.✋🏼States Win will be holding Tuesday evening phonebanks for Greene starting in April that we can sign up to join here, and we can sign up to hear about ways we can help him win here.✋🏼
THE BODIES PILE UP IN THE MIDDLE EAST, FOSSIL FUEL COMPANIES PILE UP CASH
The Iran War has cost the lives of more than 1,800 Iranian and Lebanese civilians and seven American soldiers so far, along with an estimated $11.3 billion of our money – enough to replace almost a quarter of the lead pipes still in America’s water systems. Prices are skyrocketing. The Iranian regime remains in control.
But this war does have one winner: Trump’s donors in the fossil rule industry. Americans are now spending $200 million more a day for gas than we were a week ago. Companies that don’t rely on Persian Gulf supplies for oil or liquefied methane gas (Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Total Energies, Venture Global, Cheniere) are popping champagne. Exporters and traders of American methane gas are set to earn nearly $1 billion more per week. It’s a gold rush for executives and shareholders, making their investment in this White House well worth it.
It doesn’t have to be this way. If Congress wanted to, they could enact a windfall profits tax to return that money to our profits. This would dissuade Big Oil and Gas from price gouging and protect us from price shocks. Analysts estimate putting this in place after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could have guaranteed the average American household $1,715 in relief. Activists led by Fossil Free Media (follow their Fossil Free Memo!) are calling on our reps to step up and stop Trump’s backers from war profiteering. Let’s add our voices to theirs. 🗣️ We can sign this petition and use its language in our own emails to Congress, or make calls with this script. 🗣️
GOP, CHEMICAL INDUSTRY WANT TO MAKE IT EASIER TO POISON US
We already don’t have enough protection from toxic chemicals. But to the big corporations that call the shots in our government, what we have is still too much.
The American Chemical Council is pushing GOP proposals, currently still being developed, designed to hollow out the Toxic Substances Control Act, the main chemical safety law safeguarding our health and cutting into their profits. If the chemical lobby gets their way, it will be even easier for them to get new forever chemicals on the market and harder for states to challenge them. They want to prevent good science from being used to assess long-term health risk, limit the power of the EPA to step in and protect us, and give industry a larger role in reviewing chemical safety.
🗣️ Let’s let our reps know we want them to prioritize our health and safety over the chemical lobby. We can use language and an email tool from Earthjustice here. 🗣️
Meanwhile, the Trump regime is also pursuing executive action to increase our vulnerability to chemical disasters. An EPA they’ve stacked with former ACC lobbyists is attempting to roll back Biden-era rules requiring the industry to better protect workers, first responders and fence-line communities from catastrophes like fires and explosions at chemical facilities.

PROTECT ABORTION SEEKERS AS A CLINIC ESCORT
The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act has been in the news a lot lately, as the Trump Justice Department has used it to go after anti-ICE activists and the journalists covering them. They have not been using it, however, for its intended purposes of protecting access to abortion clinics, significantly scaling back prosecutions of forced birthers’ disruption and blockades while Trump pardoned 23 people convicted for FACE Act violations in the past. The result has been increased protests and aggression from emboldened anti-choice extremists, especially for the increasingly over-burdened providers still serving red areas.
🙋♀️ In this moment, one of the most helpful things we can do as individuals is volunteer as a clinic escort, serving as a physical presence to support those seeking abortions in the face of harassment from antis. We can find a quick guide on how to find and connect with local clinics seeking support here. 🙋♀️
💲 If we’re looking for something lower commitment, we can consider a regular donation to an abortion fund in a ban state. They are very much in need of resources with the post-Dobbs rage-giving era long over. 💲
