ICE KILLS AGAIN, THIS TIME IN HOUSTON

Late last week, we learned of the 21st death in ICE’s detention camps in 2026: Adrian Andreas Florian, an 85-year-old man from Germany. Then yesterday morning, the deportation machine killed again. ICE agents involved in a targeted enforcement operation in Houston shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national. They claim Araujo “weaponized his vehicle,” attempting to run over an officer and ramming other cars. Given that they made exactly this claim to to justify their murder of Renee Good and shootings of Marimar Martinez and Luis Niño-Moncada and Yorlenys Zambrano-Contreras before they were proven to be lying, skepticism seems more than warranted.

Lorenzo’s son has said he’d been in this country nearly 35 years and was in the process of obtaining a legal status. His job was in construction, and he was picking up his employees when ICE shot him. He added: “my father did not deserve this.”

The FBI says they’re investigating the “potential assault on a federal law enforcement agent” and DHS’s Inspector General is looking into the shooting. We have zero reason to trust that they’ll be transparent or honest, and we need a real, independent inquiry. The League of United Latin American Citizens has called for an investigation by the city, and so should we. 🗣️ Let’s reach out to Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare (contact information here) and urge his office to probe what really happened and prosecute any agents who committed crimes under color of law. We can find sample language to work from here. We can also make a similar request of Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, and sign LULAC’s petition here. 🗣️

TRUMP OPENS NATO SUMMIT BY THREATENING ALLIANCE OVER GREENLAND

Trump’s been pretty tied up with his failed war on Iran in the last few months, so we haven’t heard much about his bizarre fantasy of conquering Greenland recently. He hasn’t given up on it. He suggested today that he might pull U.S. troops out of our NATO allies if they don’t bend to his will and support his claims… right after he arrived in Ankara for a NATO summit.

While this is technically an improvement on him threatening war against NATO members, it’s still undermining the alliance that helped win us the Cold War for a goal no regular American shares. Trump’s Greenland plans serve corporate interests and his dreams of making his mark on the history books, but there’s nothing we’d gain here we can’t get from working with the Greenlanders and Denmark instead of treating them like enemies. The threat alone is a gift to Vladimir Putin at a time when Ukraine has him on the run.

🗣️ Let’s reach out to our members of Congress and tell them we want them to publicly condemn Trump’s bullying and commit to blocking any troop withdrawals tied to his Greenland scheme, along with putting barriers in place to his moving forward with annexation. Meanwhile, the ceasefire with Iran seems to be featuring a lot of fire, with Tehran striking multiple merchant ships and the U.S. hitting multiple Iranian targets. The Trump regime also pulled the sanctions waiver allowing Iran to sell its oil, a key element of the memorandum of understanding. Trump’s “deal” has pulled a lot of energy out of the opposition, but we need to keep in mind the very real possibility that we’re going to see a lot more bloodshed instead of a final agreement. 🗣️ Let’s make it clear we don’t want that by reiterating our opposition to Trump’s request for more than $67 billion in supplemental appropriations for his war – we can find scripts and tools here. 🗣️

POLITICAL INTEGRITY PROJECT: SHINING LIGHT ON MONEY IN POLITICS

The fight against wealth inequality and billionaire rule is one of the driving forces of our moment, and politicians increasingly realize they need to at least pay lip service to it as they fight for our votes. That’s a step in the right direction, but we need more than that, and it can be hard to tell who’s serious and who’s just learned the right notes to hit.

The Political Integrity Project aims to help us separate the wheat from the chaff, building tools to help us identify who has made hard commitments to a specific anti-corruption agenda, who’s taking corporate PAC money, who’s backing a stock trading ban while trading stocks, and more. Their Integrity Index makes it easy to visualize where their campaign and personal money comes from. They’re also asking candidates to take their Political Integrity Pledge – supporting a constitutional amendment to overturn the impact of Citizens United, a lobbying ban for former members of Congress and their staff and spouses, putting their stocks in a blind trust and mandating other electeds to do the same and refusing all contributions from any corporate PAC. Sounds like an agenda worth getting behind.

So far, seven incumbent members of Congress and 99 challengers have taken the pledge. 🗣️ Let’s help make this a standard expectation by reaching out to our reps and candidates and asking them to sign on. 🗣️

They’re also starting a new initiative: the Donor Strike. They’re asking folks to sign on to refuse to donate to any politician who takes corporate dollars, making the choice clear: if you want my money, you can’t accept theirs. 💪🏻 We can learn more, sign on and help spread the word here. 💪🏿

ABORTION RIGHTS LIKELY ON THE BALLOT IN IDAHO

Last week, reproductive rights activists in Idaho turned in more than 110,000 signatures they gathered to get the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act Initiative on the ballot in November. Idaho is a challenging state to put an initiative up in – it’s only been done three times in the last decade – but the Secretary of State has already indicated they’ve likely met the 6% of registered voters, 6% of registered voters in at least 18 of 35 legislative district standard.

If it passes, it would codify the right to abortion up through fetal viability, along with contraception, fertility treatment and miscarriage care. Idaho’s current law is among the strictest in the country, a near total ban with minimal exceptions that allows doctors who perform abortions to be charged with felonies and face steep civil lawsuits. This will not be an easy ask in this deeply conservative state, but if we can win here we can win anywhere. 🙋🏻‍♀️ We can sign up to volunteer to help this effort here. 🙋🏾‍♂️

The good news is that communities across the country, from suburban Detroit to rural Georgia, have successfully organized to stop ICE’s human warehouses. They’re already offloading seven of the 11 sites they had eyed for camps. But they’re about to get another $70 billion cash infusion to expand their detention and deportation archipelago, so suffice to say the threat is escalating rather than retreating. We need to be prepared to fight back. 🏫 Tomorrow night at 8PM ET, Indivisible is launching its five-part Immigrant Justice Summer virtual training series, helping to prepare us to respond to ICE surges in our communities.
