A CRUCIAL CLIMATE ELECTION MOST OF US HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IS COMING APRIL 7TH
For anyone who read yesterday’s list of ways to help win elections this spring and was disappointed by how short it was, some great news: there’s another election coming on April 7th, and it’s one where each of us can make a big difference, support affordable, renewable energy, beat back data centers *and* hand a defeat to Turning Point USA.
Arizona’s Salt River Project is one of the largest publicly-owned utilities in America, controlling the power mix and managing water for the Phoenix area. Historically, they’ve been resistant to leaning into the solar power their state could provide in abundance, and their elections are typically obscure. They’re about to pick new members of their board, and there are climate champions running who could turn them in a whole new direction. A victory would give us a chance to prove we can transition a major utility to 100% clean energy while keeping rates low for consumers. The fossil fuel industry and TPUSA are mobilizing – and spending heavily – to stop them.

TAKING ON VOTER SUPPRESSION ONE VOTER AT A TIME WITH VOTERIDERS
The Trump regime has been remarkably candid that they don’t believe they can win in these midterms if they don’t suppress our vote. There’s a lot we need to do to stop them, and it’s not all dramatic. One major task is working one voter at a time to help each of them jump the hurdles the GOP is putting in their way. That’s part of the mission of VoteRiders.
This coming week, we’ve got three opportunities to get engaged with their efforts.
On Monday at 7PM ET, they’re holding an orientation for folks willing to provide in-person assistance to folks trying to secure an eligible voter ID. This is on-the-ground work, and they’re looking for volunteers in key locations. 🙋♀️ Let’s see if we live in one of them here. 🙋♀️
On Thursday, they’re holding a letter-writing party to reach Georgia voters at 7PM ET. We’ll come together with volunteers from across the country to learn how we can contact at-risk voters and help them navigate the Peach State’s strict and confusing voter ID laws. ✍️ We can sign up to join here. ✍️

TENNESSEE WANTS TO SEE KIDS’ PAPERS
A dangerous bill to drive innocent kids out of our schools is moving through the legislature in Tennessee. Advocates have been able to soften HB073/SB0836, which originally flat out allowed public school districts to refuse to enroll immigrant students who could not provide proof of legal status, a direct challenge to the established constitutional right to education for all. But the measure is now demanding data on the number of students without legal status, and gathering that information is likely to be chilling for immigrant families and set the stage for a full “show me your papers, kid” law down the road. The bill advanced out of a House committee Tuesday.

JOIN THE CALL FOR HOUSING, NOT HANDCUFFS
Earlier this month, Indiana became the latest state to effectively criminalize being homeless, with GOP Governor Mike Braun signing to law a ban on sleeping or camping on public land. In Utah, lawmakers are rallying support behind building a “campus” for “drug and mental health treatment” northwest of Salt Lake City, in what looks an awful lot like a proposal for a homeless detention camp. This is America in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Johnson v. Grants Pass upholding the criminalization of the unhoused and Trump’s executive order demanding punitive solutions and civil committal over housing first and harm reduction. We’re widely adopting policies pushed by a right-wing think tank founded by Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, who has significant investments in private prisons.
Advocates are fighting back, starting with the Utah push. ✊🏿 We can use this email tool from the National Homelessness Law Center to demand Congress and HUD block federal money from being used for detention camps for unhoused people, and use the language for call scripts. We can use also their toolkit to spread the word among our networks online. And we want to get more deeply engaged, we can sign up for updates from the Housing Not Handcuffs campaign here. ✊🏻
ANOTHER ISSUE WITH THE AI EXPLOSION: CIVIL RIGHTS PROTECTIONS
Artificial intelligence is transforming access to opportunity, shaping decisions about housing, lending, healthcare, jobs, education, and even interactions with law enforcement. But without strong protections, AI can deepen existing inequities and automate discrimination against Black communities and other communities of color. The AI Civil Rights Act of 2025 (H.R. 6356/S. 3308) ensures that innovation strengthens, not undermines, civil rights. It creates real transparency, strong safeguards, and accountability so technology serves justice, not bias. So far, only five senators and 26 reps have endorsed it. 🗣️ Let’s reach out to our members of Congress and ask them to get on board. We can find talking points from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law here and the ACLU here. 🗣️
