SUPPORT EPA RULE TO REPLACE LEAD PIPES THAT CARRY DRINKING WATER
The EPA has issued a proposed rule requiring the removal and replacement of all lead water pipes in the next decade. However, many environmental organizations, such as the Alliance of the Great Lakes, are concerned about loopholes in this proposal that would allow some municipalities, like Chicago, that have a lot of lead pipes in their drinking water system up to 40 years to get to the job done. This is far too long a time to risk our health. Let’s submit a public comment on the regulation, expressing this concern.
REMOVE CUBA FROM TERRORISM LIST
Just before leaving office Trump put Cuba on the list of governments that sponsor terrorism, which has depressed the island’s economy even further by restricting access to international financial markets. The Massachusetts Congressional delegation is now pressuring President Biden to take Cuba off the list, claiming that (1) Trump’s move was politically vindictive and there is no evidence that the Cuban government engages in terrorism and (2) Cuban migration is adding to the swell of people at the southern border because the country is in economic turmoil. Let’s read this statement from the MA Congressional delegation and then contact the White House to voice our support of this request.
PROGRESSIVE MESSAGING IN 2024
Framing our message is crucial to our success in November. There are a few experts in this area who are freely sharing their knowledge with us. George Lakoff, professor emeritus of cognitive science at the University of California, Berkeley, has been working on moral framing for decades. He has a Substack, Frame Lab, and continues to teach us. Another is Antonia Scatton who is also an expert in messaging and framing and a protege of messaging guru George Lakoff. She too has a Substack, Reframing America, for our edification. Yet another messaging expert is Anat Shenker-Osorio, Principal and Founder at ASO Communications where they craft messaging strategies that “shift from cataloging what we’re resisting to painting a desirable portrait of the world we seek.” They have put out a Freedom Over Fascism Toolkit that we are free to use. With this idea of framing in mind, we can also join Indivisible on Wednesday, January 24, 7:00 CST PM to hear messaging advice for the 2024 election. Speakers at this virtual event include Anat Shenker-Osorio of ASO Communications, host of the Podcast Words to Win By (Season two dropping January 16th) and Nick Knudsen, Executive Director of DemCast USA. We can sign up here.
A MESSAGE FROM 101-YEAR-OLD WWII WIDOW ABOUT BANNING BOOKS
Grace Linn is 101 years old. She lost her husband in World War II. And she has a message for us all about the practice of banning books. Let’s read this article about her and the protest quilt she made, and let’s watch this video and heed her words.
The messaging guidelines are messy and disorganized without clear principles. They are not messaging us very well. How can we trust them to teach us messaging?
