ANOTHER GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN LOOMS
The Senate and the House are working on a temporary solution that would kick the shutdown to March instead of tomorrow. Members of the House Freedom Caucus are not happy with this bipartisan solution. Like his predecessors, Michael Johnson is attempting to work with the Democrats to get something passed to avert this, but the Freedom Caucus have accused him of surrendering. Let’s tell our MoCs that we want them to pass this bipartisan continuing resolution to keep the government going. Then, let’s take a good look at the members of the Freedom Caucus and work to replace them in November.
VOTER GUIDE OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL NEWS SOURCES
Ballotpedia is launching a pilot project to help independent non-profit local news organizations develop local voter guides for their readers. Applications are due January 31, 2024. Let’s tell our local newsrooms about this opportunity and share the application form with them.
LEARN TO HANDLE TOUGH TOPICS IN CONVERSATIONS
Extremism is a danger in our communities and it’s time to push back against it. To do this effectively, we need to be able to talk about difficult subjects with our friends, family and neighbors. With a little help from Red, Wine and Blue we can polish our persuasive communication skills in their next “Troublemaker Training on Handling Tough Topics Like A Pro” this Thursday. Special guest Jess McIntosh, a communication strategist, CNN commentator and former host of Signal Boost will be on hand with tips and strategies to help us connect, relate and persuade with ease! We can sign up here for this virtual Troublemaker Training: Comms 101 - Handling Tough Topics Like A Pro session being held today,Thursday January 18, from 7:30 PM to 8: 30 PM ET.
BUILD A PRO-DEMOCRACY ELECTORATE
Field Team 6 and Building Bridges for America have teamed up to text unregistered voters in the key states of Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, and Georgia to urge them to register to vote. They’re looking for volunteers to help with this text-banking effort. We can read more and sign up to text-bank from our own phones, going at our own pace and on our own schedule, here.
POSTCARDS TO VOTERS IS WRITING FOR TWO SPECIAL ELECTIONS
Right now, Postcards to Voters volunteers are writing for special elections that will take place on February 13: Tom Suozzi for Congress in NY to fill George Santos’ seat and Jim Prokopiak for State House in Pennsylvania to break a 101-101 Dem/Rep split in the House there. Becoming a volunteer involves sending a sample postcard to prove we’re not bots and then we can begin requesting addresses (each volunteer supplies the postcards and stamps). If we are already a registered volunteer, we can email or Slack for addresses and instructions. Let’s get involved! If we are new to PTV, we can find instructions to sign up here.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
AZ - PROTECT ABORTION RIGHTS WITH A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
Indivisible reports: “A coalition of leading reproductive rights, healthcare, and grassroots organizations are coming together to place the Arizona Abortion Access Constitutional Amendment on the 2024 ballot.” The amendment “would roll back the bans that Republicans instituted last year and allow Arizonans to make our own decisions on abortion.” To get this amendment on the ballot, 500,000 voter signatures are required. We can find where we can help collect signatures here. We can also work directly with Arizona for Abortion Access here.
