As we make our plans to vote in all primary and general elections in 2024 at every level of government, let’s get some key dates on our calendars, starting with the Presidential Election which takes place November 5, 2024. We can find our state’s presidential primary date here. And let’s sign up for election reminders with TurboVote.
REPLACE GEORGE SANTOS WITH A DEM
With George Santos expelled from Congress, Democrats have a chance to flip his seat blue next month! The always reliable Swing Left has four ways we can all get involved to help mobilize voters in New York to vote in this February 13 election! Click HERE to see what opportunities there are. PHONEBANK FOR HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION IN CHICAGO
In November, the Chicago City Council approved a citywide referendum on increasing a tax on the sale of high-end real estate properties to fund homelessness prevention. The Bring Chicago Home initiative, which would bring in $100 million annually as a dedicated levy to get Chicagoans off the streets and would be a tax cut for 96% of property owners in the city, will get a vote during this March’s Illinois primary. We can sign up to phonebank and help this effort to better serve the unhoused here.SEND LETTERS OF SUPPORT TO MAINE AND COLORADO SECRETARIES OF STATE FOR THEIR STANCE ON TRUMP DISQUALIFICATION
Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold and Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows have been facing death threats since their states issued rulings disqualifying Trump from appearing on the Republican primary ballot. Let’s show our support for these brave women who allowed the dictates of the Constitution to take precedence over political pressure. We can contact Secretary Griswold secretary@sos.state.co.us, and Secretary Bellows sos.office@maine.gov, by email or through their websites.
DISCUSS MAUS WITH THE BANNED BOOK CLUB
In addition to The Banned Book Club of the Digital Public Library of America, which gives us free digital access to banned books, there’s also a Banned Book Club organized by the American Library Association and NBC. The ALA/NBC book club hosts and moderates public online discussions of banned books. The first book chosen for discussion in 2024 is Maus by Art Spiegelman. We can participate by joining the live chat on the ALA’s Facebook page on January 4 at 12:30 p.m. CT. And we can follow the ALA on Facebook so we can participate in future banned book discussions.
