DEMAND FULL FUNDING OF WIC - DAY OF ACTION TOMORROW
Tomorrow, January 10th, is the WIC National Day of Action. WIC — the Special Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants, and Children — provides low-income women, children, and infants with needed nutritional assistance and has been proven to reduce fetal deaths and infant mortality, improve the health and development of children, improve the health of pregnant and post-partum women, and more. Funding for WIC is at serious risk this year. Cuts could cause 2 million women and children to lose their WIC benefits. Let’s support the nationwide day of action for WIC. Tomorrow, we can contact our Members of Congress, tell them how many people in our state are at risk (see the Table on this page), and tell them to fully fund WIC in the final fiscal year 2024 spending bill. NO PLATFORM FOR BOOK BANNERS - SHUT DOWN MOMS FOR LIBERTY
Next Thursday, Bohemian National Hall in New York’s Upper East Side is scheduled to host a 'Town Hall' organized by the far-right group Moms for Liberty. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has categorized Moms For Liberty. which established its first chapter in New York City last fall, as an anti-government organization that opposes LGBTQ+ and racially inclusive school curriculum and targets for banning books that mention LGBTQ+ rights and racial equity issues. The Freedom to Learn Network is pushing back, asking folks to urge the venue sponsoring the event to cancel using the sample script linked here. Let’s join them in reaching out!

HELP EVERYONE ACCESS BANNED BOOKS
As book bans grow in the US, primarily targeting books by or about LGBTQ+ people and people of color, the Digital Public Library of America has created The Banned Book Club, whose mission is “to provide anyone who is in a library that has banned a book access to the digital version for free.” Let’s learn more at The Banned Book Club website, including how to access banned books through the free Palace Project app, and let’s spread the word—and the freedom to read!
LEARN TO BE A MEDIA ROCK STAR - TRAINING THURSDAY
If we are active and making change and looking for ways to expand our reach in this tense election year, Red Wine and Blue has a training just for us. We can learn how to bring our message to the media and make them take notice. In this January 11 online workshop from 7:30-8:30 PM ET, we’ll learn how to create good relationships with reporters, interview successfully and get our message out to a wider audience. We can sign up for this training here.
HOW TO REACH VOTERS BY POSTCARDING - WEDNESDAYS
Field Team 6, an organization that focuses on registering Democratic voters, holds weekly virtual postcard parties. A cool feature of these parties is that they have a special break-out room where novices can learn the ropes about political postcarding and receive coaching on how to get started. Parties take place every Wednesday from 2PM to 4PM PST. Let’s sign up to attend a party so we’ll be ready to write postcards to swing-state voters throughout 2024!
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
NM/ALL – MORE STEPS TO COUP-PROOF OUR ELECTIONS
Last week, New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez announced the five Republican electors who took part in the attempt to seize the presidency for Donald Trump cannot be charged under current law. However, the prosecutor also issued a report with recommendations to lawmakers to enhance the security of the state’s electoral process and to update the law so that conspirators can be prosecuted for using this coup tactic in the future. For those of us in New Mexico, let’s reach out to our legislators and Governor Lujan Grisham and urge them to read AG Torrez’s report and pass the necessary reforms as soon as possible. And for the rest of us, let’s contact our own state lawmakers and ask what they are doing to ensure election sanctity in our state does not fall victim to similar gaps in the law.
I have an idea of how democrats can help Biden get his accomplishments communicated to average everyday people who may not read the papers or listen to
his speeches. There are so many improvements being done all around the country as a result of Biden’s Bills. Why not post plaques or signs at many of the visible projects ie bridges, highway construction, even day care centers stating “This project paid for by Biden’s Bill.........” This would help people who daily use those services and drive over the bridges to actually know what Biden has been doing for them!!!
