STAND UP IN PROTEST TOMORROW
From Houston to Biddeford, Maine to St. Augustine to rural Georgia, ICE is leaving plenty of blood on the streets this month. And from the individual agents to the institution itself, no one is being held responsible for it. It’s unacceptable. And we’re not going to stand for it.
This Saturday, the Disappeared in America coalition (which includes Public Citizen, the National Day Laborers Organizing Network, The Workers Circle, Detention Watch Network and the League of United Latin American Citizens) is holding a national day of action, demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, justice for Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, and justice for all the victims. We’re bringing folks together to demand transparent, independent investigations; protection for the witnesses detained in ICE facilities; accountability both for individuals and institutions; and real steps to stop these killings from happening over and over. We want ICE out for good and our neighbors safe.
🪧 Vigils are already scheduled in more than 300 communities nationwide, and we’re still growing. Let’s find one near us to attend here, and we can find tools to host or register our own actions here. 🪧
HOW TO VOTE WHILE THE DOJ EYES US WITH SUSPICION
Trump’s MAGA-Republican Department of Justice is planning to “deploy election monitors to six states: Arizona, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Virginia. All except New Hampshire have Democratic governors and chief election officials.” Within those states, the DOJ will be targeting Democratic-leaning cities with large minority populations. Protect Democracy has our backs. 🙋🏻♀️ Let’s read their “How to spot (and push back against) federal voter intimidation” to learn more and to take action. Let’s also consider volunteering with the Election Protection Hotline. 🙋🏾♀️

Facing threats, political pressure and a Supreme Court majority that has frequently not had their backs, lower court judges are still doing vitally important work to keep this administration’s power within the bounds of the law. (Making it all the more important Democrats hold the line on keeping Trump from stacking the courts.) Let’s acknowledge their work and send encouragement to keep fighting.

Judge Indira Talwani ruled the Trump administration can’t use an obscure clause which states that funding can be cut to programs which “no longer effectuates the program goals or agency priorities” to justify billions of dollars of cuts to thousands of grants, for public safety, disaster preparedness, scientific research, clean water, and more, on the basis those grants contain keywords they find objectionable. ✍🏻 Let’s write a note or postcard to thank Judge Talwani for preventing this flimsy excuse being used for cuts to essential state programs. ✍🏽
