SEVEN DAYS UNTIL WE GET INTO SOME GOOD TROUBLE
We are officially one week away from the next major national mass mobilization – this time in honor of the legacy of civil rights hero John Lewis. Organizers have almost 1,300 events scheduled in all 50 states for Good Trouble Lives On next Thursday, coming together to respond to the attacks on our civil and human rights by this administration, and we’re still growing. (Rogan’s List is proud to be an official partner in this effort!)
Today marks the beginning of a major push to focus more attention on this day of action. Today at 1PM ET, is leading a social storm on multiple social media platforms to spread the word! We can find a toolkit and sample posts we can use here – let’s be sure to do our part!
Let’s also be sure we know where we’re going for Good Trouble Lives On. We find events near us here and learn more here. And if there isn’t one near us, there’s still time to host our own! We can join an informational session tonight at 7PM Eastern here.
NOEM’S “EFFICIENCY” DELAYED FEMA FOR 72 HOURS AFTER TEXAS FLOODS
The Trump Administration has tried to package their drive to slash public services and reduce taxes for billionaires as “government efficiency.” The horrific tragedy in Texas and concerns that cuts to the National Weather Service may have hindered coordination with local authorities has been a painful reminder of what that “efficiency” can cost us. Now we’ve learned these efforts supposedly for the taxpayer’s benefit actively slowed Federal Emergency Management Agency responses to the flood.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is requiring her personal sign-off before any funds can be released on every contract and grant over $100,000. CNN is reporting that policy prevented the pre-positioning of urban search and rescue crews close to the disaster zone, and Noem failed to authorize their deployment until more than 72 hours after the flooding began. Noem’s new red tape also held up aerial imagery requested by Texas to aid search and rescue operations, and staff shortages fueled longer wait times at a disaster call center.
This is completely unacceptable, and it is a problem we will face again with hurricane and wildfire seasons underway. Let’s push our elected officials to demand Noem relent on these bureaucratic obstacles she is imposing on emergency response. We can also ask for a full investigation of how much this policy hindered FEMA’s launch in aiding with the floods and whether or not Texans were placed in danger in the name of “efficiency,” including having Noem and acting FEMA administrator David Richardson testify before Congress. Finally, let’s urge full funding for FEMA and the NWS, for public safety’s sake.
We can also find more ways to support victims of the Texas floods here.
A HOT CLIMATE ACTION SUMMER – GET TRAINED UP
We won’t pull any punches: the fossil fuel billionaires won big in the MAGA murder budget. The fight against the combined forces of climate change profiteers and authoritarianism is the fight of our generation, and we just took a hard loss.
But we are not going to back down. A coalition including Greenfaith, the Oil and Gas Action Network, Climate Disobedience and 198 Methods are mobilizing activists across the country to level up their organizing skills and take action this summer. They’re hoping to support actions and trainings in more than 100 communities in August and September, ensuring new and experienced activists are prepared to take the fight up a notch. And they’re starting this month with trainings of trainers – bringing together the folks who are ready, willing and able to plan their own actions in advance and getting them better prepared to do the work.
If we’re looking to get more deeply engaged, trainings of trainers start THIS WEEKEND and will continue throughout the next 10 days. Let’s get more information and consider signing up here.
JOIN THE NEW JERSEY MILLION VOTERS PROJECT
New Jersey has been a safe blue state as long as we’ve called them blue states. But in 2024, it swung towards Trump by 10 points, his second-largest improvement anywhere in the country, and Democrats would be bucking history if they won the governor’s office this November - it’s been more than 60 years since the same party won the governor’s office three elections in a row in the state. We need to put the work in.
The Million Voters Project of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice seeks to elevate the voices of Black voters and other voters of color in this fall’s elections for governor, lieutenant governor, the state legislature and multiple down ballot offices. Let’s sign up to help.
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO FILM ICE
Across the United States, ICE has massively increased enforcement operations, including highly publicized raids. As immigrant communities, families, allies, and activists think about what can be done to shift policy and protect people, one thing is certain: similar to filming the police as they operate, we have the right to film ICE, as long as we are not obstructing official duties. Let's find out more and get guidance on how to hold ICE accountable as safely as possible from the Electronic Frontier Foundation here.
