PUBLIC BROADCASTING, FOREIGN AID CUTS MUST BE PASSED BY JULY 18TH
Here we go again: Congress only has until July 18th to pass the anti-Big Bird, pro-malaria Rescissions Act of 2025 (H.R. 4) before the funding cuts to NPR, PBS and foreign aid are blocked and Trump is forced to spend the money. The legislation made it through the House 214-212 in June, and Senate leadership plans to bring it to the floor next week – but multiple Republicans claim to be pushing for changes to protect local radio stations in rural areas and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which would then have to be reapproved as is by the House.
Killing this bill would be a significant embarrassment for Donald Trump, and we’ve seen this subservient GOP doesn’t have much of an appetite for that. But it would also save us from millions of preventable deaths every year and protect children’s and educational programming, a crucial source of local news when there’s already less and less available and even disaster response at a moment when the spotlight is on how the government may have failed to protect folks from flooding in Texas. So let’s make the push anyways.
Let’s reach out to our senators and tell them to oppose and delay the Rescissions Act. We can find scripts and language here, or sending them this message via Resistbot by texting SIGN PFIUBW to 50409.
RURAL HOSPITAL CLOSURES ARE STARTING - LET’S ORGANIZE
On July 2nd, seeing the writing on the wall, Curtis Medical Center in southwest Nebraska announced that it will close, citing financial hardships from anticipated Medicaid cuts in the MAGA murder budget. A progressive organization called Rural Organizing is launching a campaign to raise awareness of anticipated MAGA-induced hospital closures in congressional districts in Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Arizona ahead of the 2026 midterms. And the organization Rural Progress is launching the 2050 Fest to build progressive rural leadership. If we are progressives in rural areas and we want to protect our communities from the MAGA agenda, let’s check out the websites at Rural Organizing and Rural Progress to see how to get started.
BEAR WITNESS AT INTERNET-BASED IMMIGRATION HEARINGS
Witnessing of immigration court hearings by members of the public is an important way to shine a light on the operation of our Kafkaesque immigration system, and to offer support to the immigrants facing these courts. Bearing witness can open our eyes, as citizens, to what the presence and absence of justice and due process really mean. We can attend internet-based immigration hearings through this website. If the judge asks us to identify ourselves, we can “I am observing to bear witness.” (h/t Bearing Witness @ ICE Organizing Committee)
RETAIN A DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY ON THE PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT
Three Democratic justices are running in 2025 to retain their seats on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. What’s at stake if they lose? Issues like reproductive rights, voting rights, and whether Democrats or Republicans have “an advantage in Congress and the state legislature through redistricting.” We can help by volunteering for these justices’ retention campaigns:
HOW TO TEACH CURRENT EVENTS
Executive orders on language, education, and climate have a profound impact on students’ lives - so young people should be invited to read and critique them. The Zinn Education Project has asked teachers to share stories about how they are doing just that. Find out how students can engage with Trump's EOs with the Zinn Education Project here.

4 more House seats will be decided in 2025: TN, TX, VA, and AZ. Two in September, two in November. Let's narrow the margin.
Another seat is held by a GOP rep in assisted living who no longer votes.
(There oughta be a law about gaining the majority with place holders.)
