SUPREME COURT OKAYS DENYING CARE TO TRANS KIDS
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 yesterday that a Tennessee state law banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors (and only for transgender minors) is constitutional. The decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti is no less devastating for being expected – more than 110,000 youth living in states with these bans on the books could face a significant barrier or an end to medically necessary care. The trans teen who bought the case described it as “real-life body horror.”
Repairing the damage being done to trans kids is going to a long-term project. For today, let’s focus on providing material support to those who are going to need it. We can:
Donate to Trans Lifeline, a peer support network for trans people that runs a crisis hotline of their own which will be all the more important if Trump successfully eliminates services for LGBTQ youth through 988
Donate to the Trans Continental Pipeline, which helps trans people relocate from unsafe communities in the United States to Colorado, where they have more legal protection
Donate to one of these trans-led mutual aid funds or the Trans Income Project, providing direct support to trans folks in need
Donate to fund Distribute Aid’s harm reduction toolkits, which provide medical equipment for trans people taking injection-based gender affirming hormone therapy
This is also a good moment to reach out to LGBTQIA+ organizations in our community and see what how we might be able to help them. We can find one in our state here.
CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH – WITH OR WITHOUT CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP
This Juneteenth arrives at a moment in which efforts to honor and include Black history in our nation’s story are being actively crushed. It is crucial that we give no ground in accepting that as simply part of our new reality, that we make sure to recognize and celebrate this holiday and the turning point of emancipation for America. Let’s:
Find opportunities to take meaningful action in our community and join in the festivities. We can reach out to local organizations and news sources, and find a starter list here (h/t )

STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S GUIDANCE ON ICE
At the end of May, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell issued a know-your-rights guide for immigrants, families, and communities. It describes what ICE does, the legal limits of its power, the rights of persons who are arrested/detained and of bystanders, and how to help. It also covers the limits of local police cooperation with ICE, and provides links to resources, including how to prepare before a crisis. Let’s:
Read the guidance document.
Share it with the attorney general of our state and ask that they issue guidance for their constituents.
Ask our attorney general to post an Emergency Planning Guide for parents with uncertain immigration status, like this one.
Share widely this “Emergency Preparedness for Immigrant Families: 50 State Resource,” by the Catholic Immigration Network.
WHITE MEN FOR RACIAL JUSTICE IN A TIME OF RESEGREGATION
Founded in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, White Men for Racial Justice describes itself as “an anti-racist, pro-justice community of practice rooted in personal transformation, relationships of mutual accountability, and taking action in our spheres of influence in order to dismantle the culture and systems of white and wealth supremacy in ourselves, our communities, and our country.” If we are white men, let’s explore WMRJ’s website and consider registering for one of their cohorts that start in September.
In the meantime, we can consider volunteering with Showing Up for Racial Justice - we can join action hours every Wednesday.
