MAGA MURDER BUDGET: NOW WITH EVEN LESS HEALTH CARE
Senate Republicans are trying to cobble together a version of the MAGA Murder Budget that can pass. So far, their biggest change is cutting Medicaid even more deeply than the House’s plan.
They are still claiming they want to ram this bill through by July 4th, although that timeline is looking less and less likely. But with their narrow margins in both houses, they’re walking a tightrope. And we’re going to build public pressure to push them off and save our social safety net.
Together For California Health and the Fighting Oligarchy team are phonebanking into states like Missouri, North Carolina, Alaska and Wisconsin Saturday and Sunday to get constituents to reach out to their senators in opposition to Medicaid cuts and the entire bill. Plus there are plenty more shifts we can take making calls, tools for pressuring the media to cover the budget’s impact and write letters to the editor, and many more ways to help available here. Let’s commit to each doing one thing this weekend to making voices heard against the murder budget.
WELLS FARGO IS PROFITING OFF FOSSIL FUELS, BUSTING UNIONS AND TRYING TO PRIVATIZE THE POST OFFICE
The big banks stand to profit off burning our world. A new report has found the world’s largest banks grew their financing of fossil fuel companies last year, committing $869 billion – a $162 billion jump over 2023. Leading the pack are American banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo, who between them represent more than 20% of total global fossil fuel financing.
Many of these banks have previously committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and have walked back their pledges. Wells Fargo has completely abandoned its 2030 and 2050 climate targets, the only major U.S. bank to do so.
Unions and climate organizers are making Wells Fargo the target of a new campaign, focusing on their climate impact, their support for privatizing public services and their mistreatment of their own workers. They’re rolling out their efforts in an online event on Tuesday at 8:00PM. We can sign up to join them for the launch and find out how to get more involved here.
BUILDING A DEMOCRATIC PARTY WITHOUT BILLIONAIRES
The wealthiest people in the world have far too much power in American politics, and time and again they’ve used it to shape our system to their benefit at our expense. And their influence extends across party lines, hampering efforts by those left of center to strengthen the position of regular Americans and weaken that of the billionaires. We need big, fundamental changes if we’re going to stop the oligarchs.
Elected officials and activists alike are working to make those changes happen. Earlier this month, the Arizona Democratic Party passed a resolution to bar to the greatest extent possible billionaires and corporations from using their wealth to unduly influence primary elections. Now senators including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Chris Murphy, and Chris Van Hollen have formally asked national party leadership to take steps to get super PAC and dark money out of primaries as well.
While it's unclear how such a ban would be enforced, it’s well past time to start looking for creative means to disincentivize big money from buying primaries, and a formal institutional rejection of their influence could help change the political conversation and influence candidate and voter behavior. Even if we’re still determining the mechanism, it’s important to build pressure to do something.
Let’s add our voices to the call and tell the Democratic Party we want them to take some sort of practical measures against billionaire and corporate money in primaries. We can borrow language from this message to all 50 state Democratic Party organizations or use our own to contact our state party leadership – we can find links via Ballotpedia here. We can also reach Senator Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer here, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries here, and Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin here.
LEARN ABOUT IMMIGRANT RIGHTS AND HOW TO HELP
ICE raids are becoming more frequent and more aggressive—targeting workplaces, courthouses, and even neighborhoods near schools. The goal: to arrest as many as 3,000 people a day. These actions are tearing families apart, leaving children without parents, and forcing businesses to shut down. In many cases, the National Guard is now accompanying ICE agents during these raids, escalating fear in immigrant communities. While Donald Trump campaigned on deporting “criminals,” the reality is that many of those being detained have no criminal history at all. Instead, they are longtime community members, parents, and workers caught in a broad and harsh immigration crackdown.
So what laws give ICE the power to detain people without due process? What happens to the children left behind? And what can we do to push back and protect our neighbors? Red Wine and Blue has some answers for us. We can join them on Tuesday, June 24 at 7:30PM ET for Understanding Immigration Enforcement and How to Help. Mayra Casas Jackson from the Immigrant & Refugee Law Center will explain how immigration enforcement works, what rights immigrants have, and what actions we can take to support and stand with impacted families. We can sign up here to learn more about immigrant rights and how we can help here.
SUPPORT HARDSHIP FUND FOR POTENTIAL STRIKERS IN MINNESOTA
Right now, thousands of grocery workers in the Twin Cities are trying to negotiate new contracts – pushing for a living wage, affordable healthcare, consistent scheduling, protections against transfers and secure retirement. Many have been working without a contract since March. They’ve accused grocery operators including United Natural Foods of failing to negotiate in good faith, and strikes may be in the offing.
United Food & Commercial Workers Local 663 is building up a hardship fund to provide financial assistance to individual workers who are struggling to pay basic living expenses in the event of a strike, pay cut or workplace closure. Let’s show our solidarity and contribute to the fund here.
