DISAPPEARED IN AMERICA PHOTO PETITION EVENTS NATIONWIDE TODAY
Every day, we hear new stories of families torn apart by Trump’s deportation machine – like Paola Clouatre, the wife of a service-disabled Marine Corps veteran who was still breastfeeding their baby. Almost all of these folks are not the public safety threats Trump claims, with recent analysis suggesting 65% of those booked into detention by ICE this fiscal year had no criminal record whatsoever and 93% were not convicted of violent offenses. And far too many of them are disappearing into the system.
We are not going to let them vanish without a trace. We are going to make noise. Today, activists around the country are showing up to courthouses, federal buildings and town squares across America for a photo petition – taking pictures with posters of those who have been disappeared and flooding social media with their stories. Let’s be sure to attend one of the Disappeared in America actions near us.
If we can’t make it, we can still help spread the word. We can join the social media action and highlight one of the cases featured at disappearedinamerica.com.
WILL WE SEE THE SENATE MURDER BUDGET TODAY?
We are still expecting a revised bill text on the Senate GOP version of the MAGA murder budget today, with an aim of procedural votes tomorrow and amendments and final votes over the weekend. How this is going to happen remains unclear – multiple GOP senators are warning that they are not ready to launch debate, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) is reportedly admitting that the Medicaid cuts will place him in serious political danger, there’s still no deal on some of the most controversial issues within the Republican caucus, and House Republicans are already howling. But we’ve seen the GOP meekly fold in the face of a Trump tweet before, and we need to prepare as if this schedule will stick.
One thing is clear: they aim to brazenly lie their way to the finish line, with Speaker Mike Johnson again insisting today they are not cutting Medicaid. They are. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the House version of this budget cuts almost $800 billion from Medicaid and the Medicaid provisions alone will leave 7.8 million people uninsured, part of a total of 15 million people who will lose their health care under this GOP plan. And the Senate version is even worse, shifting more costs to the states that they can’t afford, raising the “sick tax” by allowing even higher out-of-pocket charges for patients seeking emergency care, and costing 400,000 people Medicaid access due to red tape.
Let’s make sure more people know… and speak up:
If we haven’t called our senators in opposition to the MAGA murder budget, today’s the day. And if we have, let’s do it again. We can find scripts on key issues here or via 5Calls.
The Washington Post has set up an interactive calculator so we can get a sense of how our finances would change under the MAGA murder budget. (Spoiler alert: it’s good for high-earners and lousy for folks making less than $55,000 a year.) Let’s check it out and share it with our networks.
Today’s round of phonebanks may be our last big chance to drive calls from folks in key states to their senators before they vote. Let’s sign up for a shift to reach as many people as possible at:
START PLANNING FOR ACTIONS ON LABOR DAY
With congressional Republicans rushing to pass a budget that will steal from the poor to give to the ultra-rich, it’s clearer than ever: the billionaires have seized control in America. We the people are ready to fight back. The coalition of labor organizers and progressive activists behind May Day Strong are planning another day of action on September 1st – directly taking on the corporations key to the billionaire takeover.
They’ll be hosting an info session tonight at 8PM to talk about their plans for Labor Day and #SolidaritySeptember, along with SEIU’s summer actions and the John Lewis Good Trouble Lives On Day of Action July 17th. We can sign up to join them and learn more about their plans here.
If we’re interested in hosting a Labor Day event of our own, we can check out their toolkit here and register it here.
We can also join in a social storm to spread the word about July 17th actions at 1PM ET! Find content we can use from here.
GRATITUDE FOR THE VACCINE INTEGRITY PROJECT
Yesterday, we learned a federal vaccine advisory panel newly stacked with anti-vaxxers by Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is planning to review the childhood vaccination schedule and scrutinize vaccines that have been approved for decades, citing unscientific and unsupported accusations about vaccine safety. The federal government seems to be retreating from its responsibilities to see that the American public receives life-saving vaccines under the direction of RFK Jr., a conspiracy theorist who takes his grandchildren swimming in raw sewage and whose advocacy killed so many children in Samoa they ran out of child-sized coffins.
Meanwhile, others are stepping up. A new initiative at the University of Minnesota called the Vaccine Integrity Project is taking a lead role in protecting our health, with the goal of creating a nongovernmental vaccine system. The Vaccine Integrity Project is leading discussions with vaccine manufacturers, medical associations, and insurance providers to ensure that all Americans can continue getting vaccinated. It's not ideal, but it’s better than nothing. Let’s consider sending a message of gratitude to the Vaccine Integrity Project, which is part of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy. And let’s encourage our state governments and public health authorities to work with each other and with this effort to ensure vaccines remain available and affordable for everyone regardless of what the antivaxxers force onto us.
PROTECTING OUR NATIONAL FORESTS
In 2001, the U.S. Forest Service adopted the Roadless Area Conservation Rule to protect national forests from roadbuilding and logging. Since then, there have been various debates and arguments and modifications and specific exclusions, but approximately 30% of National Forest land (59 million acres) is roadless, safeguarding the habitats and species within it.
However, the current administration is claiming that logging will prevent wildfires, and roads are needed for logging, so earlier this week they announced plans to ditch the rule. Meanwhile, Trump’s cuts to the U.S. Forest Service have weakened firefighting forces and scientists warn that Trump’s logging plans will increase wildfire risk and exacerbate climate change.
Let’s call our reps to encourage them to pressure Trump to stop this effort. We can find language from Earthjustice we can work from here and sign a petition here. We can also consider donating to support Earthjustice’s work, as they have already announced plans to file suit against the administration to defend the Roadless Rule.
We can also help defend our national forests and public lands by signing this Resistbot petition (text SIGN POYAFN to 50409) to oppose their sale being included in the murder budget. (This provision has been ruled to violate the Byrd Rule by the Senate parliamentarian, but Senator Mike Lee is working to tweak it so it can remain.)

We face the Big Beautiful Bill in Congress. We need to let each of our representatives and senators know we oppose a vote for this bill (in any of its forms with the 2017 tax cut). Let them know that you will not ever get over it if they vote for the bill.
