June 27, 2025 - They (Still) Don't Have The Votes

SENATE GOP STILL TRYING TO FIND A WAY FORWARD ON THE MURDER BUDGET
The Senate GOP was hoping to vote to start debate today on their version of the MAGA murder budget. It now looks as if that will be delayed until at least tomorrow. Why? Well, two problems:
They don’t have the bill. While Republicans have managed to get their new scheme to shift food assistance costs to the states and call it savings approved by the Senate parliamentarian, they have now taken even more hits, with Byrd rulings against their attack on Medicaid provider taxes alone costing them $250 billion. They’ve also lost their attempts to force trans care bans, keep undocumented folks from accessing health care, and shifting public money to corporate schools. The Center for American Progress estimates roughly $587 billion of what they planned to “save” has been blocked by the parliamentarian, of which at least $240 billion is expected to stick. They have a lot of rewriting still to do. (Senate Majority Leader John Thune is publicly indicating he will not seek to overrule the parliamentarian even as Republicans begin to call for her firing.)
They don’t have the votes. Even if they get their Medicaid provisions approved by the parliamentarian, multiple GOP senators are still worried about being held responsible for deep cuts. And they should be – new data from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates every state will see at least a 27% increase in its uninsured rate under the Republican plans, and Families USA has estimated 380 independent rural hospitals will be at risk of closure. And to top it all off, they still don’t have an agreement on the state and local tax deduction that can pass the House.
Donald Trump continues to insist on they meet his arbitrary July 4th deadline, so the Senate should have a busy weekend ahead. We’re not taking the days off, either. Let’s:
Call our senators ourselves once again and tell them exactly what we think of this bill. We can find language to work off at 5Calls or here.
Each reach out to one person we know – especially if they have Republican senators – and ask them to call as well. We can find some tips on how to do this via Matthew Cortland here.
Keep taking shifts phonebanking into key states and districts to drive even more calls!
TAKING ON TRUMP’S CORPORATE COLLABORATORS THIS WEEKEND
No authoritarian works alone, and the business world is a crucial pillar of support for Donald Trump. Activist are continuing efforts to make sure they know that support will cost them. This weekend, folks are coming together to take on two prominent contributors to the anti-democratic movement: right-wing donor and propagandist Elon Musk and deportation flight provider Avelo Airlines.
In honor of Musk’s birthday tomorrow, the #TeslaTakedown movement is holding their biggest day of action yet: #MuskMustFall. We can join protesters at at galleries, showrooms, dealerships and charging stations near us here, or if we can’t make it join efforts to push state and local governments to divest their money from Musk companies and get T-Mobile to stop financing him.
Meanwhile, the #StopAvelo coalition has a dozen more protests aimed at pressuring the carrier to end their profiting off abductions of our friends and neighbors. Let’s see if there’s one near us here, and find tools for pushing our city to stop funding Avelo here and ideas and guidance on more actions we can take here.
TAKING KNOW YOUR RIGHTS INFO TO WHERE IT’S NEEDED MOST TUESDAY
Welcome to #SolidaritySummer. With Stephen Miller ordering ICE to target Home Depot parking lots to round up undocumented immigrants, we know where we need to be. In an SEIU-led initiative, on TUESDAY, July 1st, workers across the country are heading to our local Home Depots to leaflet shoppers with Know Your Rights information – detailing what rights folks have if detained, and what rights we all have if we see someone else detained. Let’s find an event near us here or volunteer to host our own here.
GET TRAINING TO MOTIVATE OUR REPS THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA
If we are already calling our senators and representatives and showing up at protests, here’s another tool we can put to work: using our social media accounts to tag our elected officials and post about the issues we care about. Urge them to vote the right way, thank them when they do, and push them when they don’t. When we post, others will see it and may do the same. Field Team 6 makes it easy by collecting our reps’ handles on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Bluesky—all we need to do is fill in the blanks and hit post. Want to learn how? We can join FT6’s fun training at PleaseGrowASpine.org, search #PGAS to find and amplify others, and keep using our voices every day. We'll learn how to use the accounts we already have—or get help starting new ones. They have trainings scheduled for Monday at 2PM ET, Tuesday at 8PM ET, Monday the 7th at 2PM ET or Thursday the 10th at 2PM ET. We can sign up here.
PUBLIC HEALTH IS IN TROUBLE, CALL THE DOCTORS
With Republicans dismantling our health care system at a rapid pace, America needs a new class of leaders who understand what it will take to rebuild it better – and folks with hands-on experience can only help. 314 Action plans to raise and spend over $25 million by 2030 to elect 100 new doctors to state legislatures, Governor’s offices, and federal offices. We can find out more about this initiative here, whether we want to donate or run for office.
Congress has until July 18th to pass $9.4 billion in DOGE cuts. The House narrowly approved the cuts, but Senate has issues.
So many causes, so little time.

I refuse to give in to inhumanity, cruelty, ignorance, personal gain, the naysayers *&* the bought & paid for 6 justices occupying the SCOTUS bench: let's upend birthright citizenship & then go on Summer vacay.... all in a day's work.
