WHAT’S AT STAKE AS MAGA MURDER BUDGET VOTES APPROACH
By the end of this week, Republicans are promising to put the MAGA murder budget on Donald Trump’s desk.
Their current plan is to begin a series of votes on amendments to the bill – the vote-a-rama – at 9AM this morning. This would push final passage in the Senate to late today or early tomorrow, and House Democratic leadership is warning members to be prepared for votes on their side of Capitol Hill as soon as Wednesday.
This bill is a disaster. It will kill jobs, it will kill industries, and it will kill people. It will cause spiking energy bills and rolling blackouts. It will close hospitals and nursing homes. It will leave 16 million more of us without health care… and maybe tens of millions more. It cruelly puts gender-affirming care and reproductive health care out of reach for countless people. It will make the richest folks in the world richer and pay for it by making poor Americans poorer. It will fund secret police and a detention camp archipelago, breaking apart more families and locking away more of our friends and neighbors. It will explode the national debt to an extent that may well damage our economy in the near term. It must be stopped.
We do not know what is going to happen yet. The bill is a jerry-rigged mess that’s still being taken apart and reconstructed and is attempting to promise everything to everyone. It is wildly unpopular to the point where GOPers in competitive seats are retiring rather than defend it and breaks countless promises Republicans made to the American people. Many factions of MAGA remain deeply unhappy and have set conflicting red lines. We have seen them fold before. It is entirely possible that in their desperation to avoid failure and Trump’s wrath, please their billionaire donors and destroy the lives of immigrants that they will find just enough votes to get it across the finish line. It could also still all fall apart.
At this moment, all there is for us is to make sure we keep fighting until the final gavel. Let’s keep the phones ringing off the hook in every House and Senate office in America, DC and district, until this is done one way or the other.
As always, we can find call scripts and email tools from Indivisible on the full bill here and scripts challenging specific atrocities from 5Calls and here. We can continue to push every Republican to vote no and every Democrat to slow down the process as much as possible – and let’s also make sure Dems know we expect them to treat the rules of the Senate as having changed for good with all these GOP violations.
We can sign up to call into key states and districts to get them to reach out to their electeds all week, including today:
11AM ET with Medicaid Defenders, sign up here
2PM-4PM ET with Alliance for Retired Americans, sign up here
5PM ET with Medicaid Defenders, sign up here
6PM-8PM ET with MoveOn, sign up here
7PM-10:15PM ET with Grassroots Democrats HQ and Chop Wood, Carry Water, sign up here
And lastly, let’s make sure we’re asking less politically engaged people in our lives to call too. This is the moment to pull out all the stops.
HITTING HOME DEPOTS FOR IMMIGRANT RIGHTS IN #SOLIDARITYSUMMER
Whether or not we are able to stop the MAGA murder budget, Trump’s efforts to cleanse our country of immigrants will continue. And we will continue to protect those in our communities.
Tomorrow, workers across the country are heading to our local Home Depots to leaflet shoppers with Know Your Rights information – detailing what rights folks have if detained, and what rights we all have if we see someone else detained. Let’s find an event near us here or volunteer to host our own here - many new events added in the last few days.
This is part of the May Day Strong coalition’s #SolidaritySummer, building towards a major day of action on Labor Day. We can learn more about this push here, check out their host toolkit here and register a new event here.
INSIST ON ACCURATE HEADLINES FROM LEGACY MEDIA
In reporting on the Supreme Court’s decision to end the ability of federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions against presidential policies, the New York Times wrote this headline: “Supreme Court Limits National Injunctions, a Victory for Trump.” Here’s what really happened—and it’s reported in the article, as if it's just so much fine print: “the decision cleared the way for the executive order to go into effect in the 28 states that have not challenged it…” That executive order “seeks to end the practice of automatically granting citizenship to anyone born in the United States…” In other words, a headline that accurately communicates the stakes would read, “Limiting National Injunctions, Supreme Court Imperils Birthright Citizenship in 28 States.” Let’s tell the New York Times that whether a Supreme Court ruling is a “victory” for Trump pales in importance to the impact of ruling on the American people, and we want the newspaper’s headlines to reflect that. HELP THE HUMANITIES SUE DOGE
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the American Historical Association (AHA), and the Modern Language Association (MLA) filed a lawsuit in federal district court last week, seeking to reverse the recent actions to devastate the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), including the elimination of grant programs, staff, and entire divisions and programs. However, these organizations have been underfunded for a long time. Those of us who'd like to support the Humanities and help them win against Elon Musk's DOGE can find out more and donate here.

Good governance or Inhumane treatment? That is an easy question to answer. Who elected these cruel, selfish people and why? Where did they find so many charlatans? We will not stand for this shoddy treatment of our elderly, our needy, our children, our grandchildren! https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/senate-debacle-portends-militancy?r=3m1bs
You COULD, unless in an ‘essential service’, just STAY HOME. Make yourself tea & toast,,or order a pizza (essential service! 👍).
Going about your business when the ‘wolf is at the door - literally - doesn’t prevent anything. This suggestion applies to members of your Parliament as well, who are AFRAID of Trump’s power base…with good reason.
This would be - not so much a ‘STRIKE’ - as a refusal to live as usual (work/school/leisure) in an ‘AMERICA NOT RECOGNIZABLE and NOT ACCEPTABLE’.
These CRAZY people who have jumped into positions they have NO RIGHT to hold by virtue of INCOMPETENCE and CRUELTY, will do whatever ‘whim’ the MADMAN proposes. 🤬
Do not give them ANY ALLEGIANCE…or ANY MORE POWER.
I fear that the next step of any fascist regime > that of widespread violence ordered by Trump+ , will be very soon. 😬
Show these terrible bullies that you still have ‘recourse’.
You don’t need anything but refusal to ‘lift a finger’.
Hunker down and LIVE…
…because the NEXT STAGE after your fight to prevent the BBBILL will involve Trump’s vengeful WRATH = deadly force.
