SHUTDOWN UPDATE: HOUSE PASSES BLANK CHECK FOR TRUMP
The House squeaked through the blank check continuing resolution yesterday 217-213. Thomas Massie (R-KY) voted no, Jared Golden (D-ME) voted yes, and the rest of the votes were along party lines.
Golden put a statement describing this CR as “not perfect, but a shutdown would be worse.” The problem with this logic is that Trump and Musk are actively shutting down wide swaths of the government anyways, stealing money the president is legally obligated to spend from programs we depend on so they can pass it on to the billionaires or dole it out as political favors to those who kiss the ring. This bill will allow them to continue to wreck our government – it’s a slush fund without even the standard checks on administration action of a normal appropriations bill. The House just gave the go-ahead to let the Trump-Musk thefts continue.
The measure now goes to the Senate, with the House not scheduled for votes again until March 24th. This is our best chance to block it – Republicans will need at least seven Democrats to break the filibuster. Let’s contact our members from both parties and tell them to reject this power grab and any appropriations deal that does not end the Trump-Musk coup. TRUMP ESCALATES TRADE WAR, HOUSE GOP VOTES TO LET HIM AS ECONOMY SHAKES
Trump ran his whole campaign promising “a golden age” of lower prices for America, blowing off Harris pointing out his actual plan would do the opposite. Trump lied and Harris told the truth. Trump’s mass layoffs and tax hikes on trade are rattling the economy and increasingly driving us towards recession. We’ve seen major drops in the stock market as even Trump and his aides have refused to rule out the possibility of a downturn, and instead they’ve doubled down on their trade wars.. Congressional Republicans keep suggesting they’re worried about the tariffs, but yesterday every member of the House GOP voted to block consideration of a Democratic effort to roll them back. Let’s reach out to our members of Congress and tell them we know they have the power to stop Trump’s import tax hike, and if they don’t use it we will hold them responsible for the price hikes and the lost jobs Trump causes. And with our House members in particular, let’s thank the Democrats for attempting to end the trade war and express our frustration with Republicans for deliberately keeping it going. Every day we learn of more dedicated federal workers losing their jobs and more of the services we depend on being gutted by Trump and Musk – from veterans’ care to Social Security to hurricane and tornado forecasting to last night’s announcement of massive layoffs at the Education Department. They are taking a sledgehammer to our government so big corporations can profit off filling the gaps and they can redirect the “savings” to tax cuts for billionaires. We won’t stand for it. Federal worker labor unions led by the Federal Unionists Network, the Working Families Party, and advocates for working people like Senator Chris Murphy and Robert Reich are coming together to launch a mass nationwide campaign to stop Trump and Musk and #SaveOurServices – and they’re holding their first big organizing call tomorrow night at 8PM Eastern. Grassroots organizing is making a difference in the fight against Trump, Musk and MAGA. Decentralized, leaderless movements like 50501 and Tesla Takedown are reshaping the conversation and proving the resistance is very much alive – and successfully making Elon and his brands toxic, with the sales and stock slumps to prove it. Let’s keep building! 50501 has Remove, Reverse, Reclaim national days of action coming up on Saturday, March 15th and again on Saturday, April 5th – let’s find an event to attend in our community here or organize one ourselves! And more than 100 Tesla Takedown events are already scheduled through this weekend – we can find one near us here. START A SAFE SCHOOLS CAMPAIGN, PROTECT IMMIGRANT STUDENTS
The forced disappearance of Mahmoud Khalil is just part of Trump’s campaign to create a climate of fear in our schools – and not just on college campuses. Their removal of important protections to keep ICE out of sensitive locations is keeping young children out of the classroom for fear that they’ll be caught up in the deportation machine. We need to do whatever we can to ensure that all our schools are a safe place for learning for all our kids. Indivisible has produced a Safe Schools for Every Student campaign toolkit to help us urge local school boards to adopt policies that protect all students, regardless of immigration status – offering an action plan including legal guidance, model policies, and outreach materials, to help communities challenge ICE's actions and keep our kids from being intimidated. We can check out the toolkit and learn how to start this campaign here. We can also share these recommendations from the National Education Association and the National Immigration Law Center on best practices on dealing with immigration enforcement in schools with superintendents, administrators and teachers. (And let’s keep up the pressure on any university we’re connected with to protect their students and on our members of Congress to stand with Mahmoud.)
