HEADS MUST ROLL FOR UNSECURE WAR PLANS GROUP CHAT
It doesn’t seem that long ago that unsecure email servers were the most important issue in American politics. But yesterday we may have finally topped that, as we learned that senior Trump officials including Vice-President Vance, Secretary of Defense Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller were planning military strikes in Yemen over a Signal group chat – because they accidentally included the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic (gift link to the story). While the mistake of including the media is a clear enough sign of a total failure of operational security, Signal is also not approved for sharing classified information, there is serious risk they’ve exposed this conversation to hacking by foreign intelligence services, and with messages set to disappear it also seems likely they are breaking the law about preserving government records. The reaction has been fierce, but there need to be real consequences for this. Let’s contact our members of Congress – especially if they’re on the House or Senate Armed Services Committees – and tell them:
We want them to demand hearings to investigate this security breach, to establish what other operations may have been exposed through similar protocol violations and whether U.S. servicemembers have been endangered, and to learn more about the potential and illegal destruction of records
We want them to demand an independent prosecutor investigate all those involved for potential violations of laws on classified information
We want them to demand resignations, and press for impeachments if none are forthcoming
LOSING FEMA WOULD BE A DISASTER
The Federal Emergency Management Agency organizes and funds support across the nation for communities hit by natural disasters, a job that is becoming all the more important in the climate change era. As promised in Project 2025, Trump is threatening to destroy the agency, and he’s used disaster relief as a political weapon.
Trump called FEMA and said it might “go away,” saying states should cover the costs of emergency management within their borders with an unspecified amount of reimbursement from Washington. He’s now signed an executive order directing states and localities to do more, and his Secretary of Homeland Security told a cabinet meeting yesterday they would eliminate FEMA entirely. This would require an act of Congress, and more importantly: with disasters causing billions and dollars in damage, states and localities simply can’t afford to do the job without them.
Meanwhile, there’s already been a number of cases just in this term of Trump taking advantage of disasters to punish blue areas and enforce his agenda. He threatened to withhold wildfire aid for Los Angeles, and his Department of Housing and Urban Development said they’d block $225 million in disaster recovery funds for Asheville for including efforts to support marginalized communities.
We need to contact our reps and let them know natural disasters don’t care who we voted for and FEMA can’t either, and they need to protect the agency and ensure effective disaster relief for all. FEMA must stay, and disaster relief should be apolitical.
#TESLATAKEDOWN SET FOR 500-PROTEST SATURDAY ON MARCH 29TH
The Tesla takedown protests continue to grow as they roll towards the six-week mark, and they’re taking their toll on Elon Musk’s “baby.” In addition to the stock dropping, the number of Tesla owners trading in their cars is now at a record high, and some longtime Tesla boosters are starting to publicly raise concerns about Musk. Musk is going as far as publicly attacking organizers by name and having Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick try to pitch right-wingers on EVs. We’re getting through, and we’re just getting started. This weekend, #TeslaTakedown organizers are planning the biggest day of action yet – aiming for 500 demonstrations at all 277 Tesla showrooms this Saturday, March 29th. If we haven’t made it to one yet, let’s join the party this weekend – we can find a rally or picket line near us at Teslatakedown.com, or organize one of our own with their toolkit here.
DELIVER PRO-MEDICAID STORYBOOKS TO CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES – SIGN UP TODAY
Trump and congressional Republicans are planning to hand out $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy and massive corporations and pay for them by slashing Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, food assistance, K-12 education, and other critical services that millions of Americans rely on. Our members of Congress need to hear from us about the devastating impact these cuts would have.
Now MomsRising has a powerful way to make a difference: delivering a storybook filled with real-life testimonies from parents across the country, highlighting why Medicaid, SNAP, public education, and child care are indispensable. It’s simple—when we sign up, they’ll mail us a book of personal stories along with easy-to-follow instructions, including how to locate and visit our representative’s local office. We can let local media know and make our own recordings to share on social media as well. This small action can make a big impact in educating our leaders and urging them to protect the programs that families depend on. We can sign up here to volunteer to deliver a storybook to our representative’s office – and we need to let them know today so we can get the books in time!
EPA SOLIDARITY WALKS TODAY
The Environmental Protection Agency is being gutted by Trump and MAGA, just as promised in Project 2025. Among many steps they are taking to bring climate action and environmental justice work to a halt and let polluters run wild: last week we learned Administrator Lee Zeldin is planning to eliminate the agency’s scientific research arm, the Office of Research and Development, and fire 50%-75% of the people working for it. This would mean the EPA does not have independent science to develop their plans to keep our air and water clean, and would have to rely on outside research – often funded by the industries we need protecting from. Activists are responding by holding EPA solidarity walks in eight cities across the country today. For folks near Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Durham, Dallas, Seattle or Anchorage, let’s consider joining the walks – we can find more info here. For the rest of us, let’s use this script from the organizers to push our elected officials to protect the Office of Research and Development. We can also find more general scripts on protecting the EPA from 5Calls here or send this Resistbot message to keep and strengthen EPA protections by texting SIGN PLZZHI to 50409.
PHONE ZAP TODAY TO PROTECT IMMIGRANT ACTIVISTS FROM DEPORTATION
The Trump Administration is increasingly targeting individual activists with the deportation machine. Having started with those protesting the war in Gaza, they are now moving on to those who fight for the undocumented like Colorado organizer and grandmother Jeanette Vizguerra. We need to be taking steps to protect these leaders now. Freedom for Immigrants is organizing a phone zap TODAY at 1:30PM Pacific/4:30PM Eastern to demand California Governor Gavin Newsom pardon their executive director Laura Hernandez and community leader Sithy Bin to reduce their risk of deportation. Let’s join in these calls and help #KeepLauraHome today – we can register here.
