THE FIRST MAJOR ELECTIONS OF TRUMP 2.0 ARE ALMOST HERE

Elon Musk is now being accused of breaking Wisconsin law to bribe voters into voting for the conservative candidate for a swing seat on the state supreme court. Republicans are rushing resources into two special elections for the House in Florida, so terrified at the numbers they’re seeing in deep red districts they’ve pulled Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination for UN ambassador even before they see results. The political world will take tomorrow’s election results as insight on how America feels about Trump’s economic implosion, robbery from the federal government and attacks on our democracy, and the results could change the course of the MAGA agenda. Let’s do whatever we can to win:
We can find links to multiple opportunities to help Judge Susan Crawford win in Wisconsin here
We can sign up to phonebank for Josh Weil in the Florida Sixth Congressional District here
We can make calls for Gay Valimont in the Florida First Congressional District today here and tomorrow here
DEMAND CONGRESS REIGN IN ICE
Recently, masked, plainclothes people we are told were federal immigration agents handcuffed a frightened Tufts University student named Rumeysa Ozturk and put her in an unmarked vehicle with tinted windows. Ozturk was legally in the US on a student visa. A federal judge issued an order that she not be removed from Massachusetts without 48 hours advance notice, but ICE apparently ignored the order: within 24 hours of her arrest, she was being held in Louisiana. This is, of course, not the first time. Also arrested and/or detained by ICE on no or very flimsy grounds:
Alireza Doroudi, student at the University of Alabama
Mahmoud Khalil, lawful permanent US resident
Badar Khan Suri, Georgetown University student
Dr. Rasha Alawieh, H-1B visa holder
Rebecca Burke, visiting British citizen
Jasmine Mooney, Canadian seeking a work visa in San Diego
Lucas Sielaff, a visiting German citizen
Jessica Brosche, a visiting German citizen
Fabian Schmidt, permanent US resident originally from Germany
An unnamed University of Minnesota graduate student
An unnamed French researcher who criticized Trump’s academic research policies in text messages
Ma Yang, a green card holder living in the US since she was a baby, deported to Laos, where she doesn’t know anyone and can’t speak the language
If we think we’re safe because we are American citizens, we need to think again:
Jonathan Guerro, handcuffed at gunpoint by ICE agents
20-year-old American in Utah detained by ICE after he honked at them
A member of the Mescalero Apache nation questioned by ICE in New Mexico
A Trump voter in Virginia pulled over and handcuffed at gunpoint by ICE agents
10-year-old citizen recovering from brain cancer deported to Mexico
Those are the recent ones we know about. The government is not required to keep track.
Let’s tell our Members of Congress to file legislation:
To protect American citizens from ICE arrests, detentions, and deportations. They might title it “There is No America Without Due Process and the Rule of Law Act of 2025.”
To reign in ICE’s unchecked powers. They might title it the “No Brown Shirts in America Act of 2025.” This could be a possible model for a bill.
TRUMP TARIFFS ARE CREATING A TRUMP SLUMP
Last week, Trump announced major tax hikes – 25% tariffs on imported cars and auto parts and 25% tariffs on all countries that buy oil and gas from Venezuela. He threatened to radically increase tariffs on the European Union and Canada if they worked to “do economic harm” to America, and suggested tariffs would be coming on whole sectors like copper, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and lumber. Now this Wednesday is Trump’s “Liberation Day,” when he claims he’ll impose huge tariffs on America’s trading partners – and no one knows exactly what they are going to look like, including members of his own administration. We have no idea whether they’ll be different percentages by country or across the board, how broad they’ll be or whether the sectoral tariffs will be included. Trump seems to suggest something different every time he speaks.
This is piling chaos and uncertainty on top of the damage tariffs are already doing to the economy. Supply chains have been scrambled, costs are already climbing, the stock market is wobbling and consumer confidence is tanking. Congress has the power to step in and stop Trump’s import taxes before they do even more damage, and they need to use it. Unwilling to wait for Republicans to come around, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mark Warner (D-VA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) are forcing a vote TOMORROW on Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariffs on Canda through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Let’s reach out to our senators and tell them they need to vote for this resolution to stop Trump’s Canadian tariffs and to do what they can to rescind Trump’s import tax hikes in general. We can find scripts and language here.
PROTECT THE FEDERAL JUDICIARY FROM TRUMP
As federal judges issue rulings demanding that the Trump administration adhere to the Constitution and federal law, and as MAGA attacks on judges and their families proliferate, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) has introduced a bill he’s calling the No Rogue Rulings Act. It purports to “stop” the “Trump resistance in robes”—what the rest of us would call the constitutionally proper exercise of judicial authority to prevent Trump from acting like a king. This bill is likely to get a vote Wednesday. Let’s tell our Members of Congress to oppose H.R.1526 and let’s tell them we want legislation passed that will protect the federal judges and their families and associates from threats and intimidation by anyone, including the president. We can find a script from 5Calls here.
(We also have votes on the schedule in the House this week on the resolution overturning the Biden-era rule from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau capping predatory overdraft fees from big banks and on the SAVE Act measure to suppress our votes. We can use scripts and language here and here to tell our representatives to say no.)
GRATITUDE AND CELBRATIONS FOR TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY
The trans community is under attack, with new federal investigations into multiple states aimed at forcing schools to out kids trans kids just the latest blow. Today marks Trans Day of Visibility, and it is crucially important that we send the message to our trans loved ones, to those who seek to destroy them and to the nation that we will not quietly ignore their erasure. The Maine Principals’ Association and local school officials in Cumberland are setting an example, refusing to comply with the Trump Administration’s trans athlete bans and publicly dedicating themselves to following state laws protecting their students. Let us take today to send a quick note to thank these institutions for standing with trans kids – we can find contact information here and here.
We can also urge our own school districts to put out a statement reaffirming their commitment to civil, human and First Amendment rights for all, including trans and gender nonconforming students, using sample language here.
Lastly, let’s be sure to attend events to mark Trans Day of Visibility – we can find one near us here, or join a national coalition of LGBTQ movement organizations for a virtual celebration and organizing call at 7:00PM Eastern here.
