STAND UP FOR SCIENCE TODAY, UNITE & RESIST WITH WOMEN TOMORROW
Scientific research and women’s rights are under attack. So we’re going to stand up and fight back. Today, a grassroots group of scientists, students and supporters will hold Stand Up for Science rallies in Washington, D.C. and at least 31 other cities across the country in protest of the Trump administration’s cuts to research funding and undermining of vaccines and climate action efforts. In addition, allies will be walking out at their campuses and workplaces at 12:00PM local time. Then tomorrow, Women’s March will mark a hard International Women’s Day with Unite & Resist events nationwide. Let’s find actions near us here and here to join, or be sure to take part in the noon walkouts! (There are also Tesla Takedown pickets going forward this weekend we can find to attend here!)
STOP MUSK AND TRUMP FROM ILLEGALLY BLOCKING RESEARCH
After Trump and Musk blocked funding in January, U.S courts have repeatedly stopped these efforts to keep scientists from conducting life-saving medical and scientific research. Of course, we cannot trust this administration, which ignores judges' rulings and dishonestly makes up inefficient procedures to stall our national research programs. Let's do more than just march today - we can also contact our members of Congress and tell them to take back their power as our representatives who decide how our taxpayer dollars are spent.
FIVE EX-DEFENSE SECRETARIES AGREE: NO NEW PENTAGON PICKS WITHOUT ACTION ON MILITARY PURGE
So much has happened since then it can be hard to remember it’s been just two weeks since Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth carried out an unprecedented purge of the U.S. military, firing the chair of the Joint Chiefs, the chief of naval operations, the Air Force chief of staff and the judge advocate generals of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
This was a continuation of their efforts to force non-white men from positions of authority and make our military less diverse and a reflection of their insistence that our historically apolitical military should be yes men first and foremost loyal to Donald Trump and his agenda, above the Constitution and the rule of law – and they haven’t stopped there. Last week they also forced out yet another Black woman from the senior ranks of our military. Trump and Hegseth are damaging the strength and effectiveness of our military, and making frightening moves given their repeated threatens to use the military to put down public protest.
A bipartisan group of five former secretaries of defense have called for immediate congressional hearings on the purge, saying they raised “troubling questions over the administration’s desire to politicize the military,” and urged the Senate to refuse to confirm any new Pentagon nominations in the meantime – including Trump’s pick retired general and Theil- and Kushner-connected venture capitalist Dan Caine as the new chair of the Joint Chiefs. Republican leadership has blown these requests off.
Let’s contact our members of Congress and let them know we agree with these former cabinet secretaries and want to see hearings on Trump’s firings of generals. Let’s also urge them to commit to voting no on any Pentagon picks until they get answers as the defense chiefs recommended, and to put holds on nominations to replace these officers. We can use language from this Resistbot petition from ’s .
SOLIDARITY SIP-INS WITH STARBUCKS UNION SATURDAY-TUESDAY
We’ve gone from the most pro-labor White House in history to the Trump Administration kneecapping the National Labor Relations Board and putting professional union-busters in key positions at the Department of Labor. Organized labor will get no support from DC in the near future, and that makes solidarity from the people more important than ever. Here’s a fun way to help in the next few days: Starbucks Workers United is asking allies to host solidarity sip-ins at our local not-yet-unionized Starbucks locations between March 8th and 11th, leading up to the annual shareholders meeting on the 12th. If we’re interested, we can use this form to register an event – we’ll get a toolkit, materials we need and an invite to a training and how to get it done!
GET READY TO RUN FOR SOMETHING
Ballotpedia reports "on average, between 2018 and 2024, 64% of elections covered by Ballotpedia were uncontested, ranging from a low of 50% in 2021 to a high of 70% in 2024." This is happening near us, and we all have the power to change it! Let’s read their analysis, and then find out more about running for local office at runforsomething.net.
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
CA – NEWSOM PARROTS GOP TALKING POINTS ON TRANS KIDS
Governor Newsom debuted his new podcast by featuring MAGA influencer and Civil Rights Act opponent Charlie Kirk, and naturally Kirk turned to the conversation to a debate over trans people in public spaces. Newsom folded, siding with the genital inspectors and accepting their frame condemning trans girls competing in school sports as “deeply unfair.” Transphobes have successfully turned this functional non-issue into the vanguard of their ongoing attack on trans rights, and while trans kids are being targeted in schools by Republicans at all levels of government we need Democrats to fight for them instead of giving in. Let’s reach out to Governor Newsom here or by phone at 916-445-2841 and tell him he needs to push back against right-wing demonization of trans folks rather than reinforcing it.
