🚨 BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP AT THE SUPREME COURT 🚨
Birthright citizenship, the guarantee that any person born on U.S. soil is a U.S. citizen from birth, is very explicitly secured in the 14th Amendment and as the historian Martha Jones argues is at the heart of the American concept of liberty and democracy. It is under brazen attack by Donald Trump.
This morning, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in the lawsuits over Trump’s order to federal agencies to stop obeying the Constitution on birthright citizenship. While the question at hand in this specific hearing is about the power of district courts to issue national injunctions, if the justices side with MAGA it could allow Trump to strip citizenship from targeted newborns across most of the country in spite of every single court who has heard it striking it down. (We can listen to the argument at 10AM here.)
There’s not much we can do to help ensure the Supreme Court upholds the 14th Amendment (again). But here’s some actions we can take to stand up for birthright citizenship while we wait to find out:
Contact our senators to tell them we want them to take concrete action to support birthright citizenship by opposing Trump’s nomination of Whitney Hermandorfer, one of the authors of a brief for the State of Tennessee supporting Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship, to serve as a federal judge on the Sixth Circuit. We can find language here or send this message directly via Resistbot by texting SIGN PMEFPL to 50409.
The paperwork necessary to enforce this order is currently done at the state and local level, so let’s make sure our governors and state legislators know we expect our state to follow the Constitution. We can use language and this tool from Indivisible. (We can also encourage them to ensure everyone targeted by the deportation machine goes into immigration court with a lawyer.)
Let’s check this map to see if our state’s attorney general is among those suing to protect the 14th Amendment. If they are, let’s contact them and thank them for their work, and if not let’s express our disappointment.
For those of us with the means, let's also take this time to donate to organizations in our states that provide legal services to immigrant children, or to national organizations like Acacia Justice, the Florence Project, Kids in Need of Defense, and the National Immigrant Justice Center.
📞 *ANOTHER* WAY THE GOP IS KICKING FOLKS OFF HEALTH CARE – MASS CALL TONIGHT 📞
The preliminary Congressional Budget Office score indicated 8.6 million people would lose their health insurance over the course of the decade because of the MAGA Medicaid cuts, and 13.7 million people would go uninsured because of the Republican budget overall. Why? Because in addition to gutting Medicaid, they are also further restricting access to Affordable Care Act marketplaces *and* allowing the enhanced premium tax credits under the ACA to expire.
Losing those tax credits alone could cost 4 million people their coverage, and those who get to keep theirs will be paying more – a lot more. Premiums will go up by 75% on average for the 20 million enrollees, and in 12 states people would see their costs literally double. But they’ll be plenty of room for tax cuts for billionaires.
Let’s read more here and use this language or this Resistbot to reach out to our members of Congress and let them know they need to stop the cost spike and extend these subsidies.
And then let’s sign up here to join a coalition led by Working Families Power, Indivisible, MoveOn, the NEA and more for a mass call tonight at 8PM ET on how we can fight to keep Trump’s #HandsOff our health care.
🛢️ ENERGY BILLS ARE GOING UP THANKS TO RECONCILIATION – MASS CALL TONIGHT 🛢️
The reconciliation bill is an environmental catastrophe, what the Sierra Club described as a “corporate polluter’s wish list.” They’re selling hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands, eliminating funding for green energy projects, opening up vast stretches to drilling, reducing royalties fossil fuel companies must pay and speeding up fossil fuel projects. But while Big Oil and Gas profits, we’re going to end up paying more – most notably with a massive rollback of the clean energy tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Make no mistake, getting rid of these credits will raise our electric bills. A recent study found repealing the IRA tax credits would drive energy prices up nearly 10% by 2029. Another suggested the repeal alone would raise household energy costs by $32 billion and kill almost 800,000 jobs. (We can find state-by-state stats here.) We need to make sure Congress knows we know who will pay the price here.
Let’s reach out to our members of Congress to demand they oppose repealing the IRA clean energy tax credits in reconciliation. We can find language to work off of here or text SIGN PEGPKQ to 50409 to send this Resistbot.
We can also sign up to join Climate Defenders for a mass organizing call at 6:30 PM tonight here to discuss their push to stop the giveaways to Big Oil billionaires with events in DC on June 3rd and locally on June 16th!
📝 PLEDGE TO DO OUR PART TO DEFEND CIVIL RIGHTS 📝
In an extraordinary letter to the American public, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 240 civil rights groups, enumerates the ways in which the Trump regime is threatening our rights and freedoms, and provides a pledge we can take to defend our rights and freedoms. Let’s pledge to (1) speak up when we see rights under attack in our community; (2) attend at least one protest or community meeting this year; (3) contact our Members of Congress when legislation threatens basic rights; (4) support at least one organization working to protect our democracy; (5) share information about these threats with at least five people we know. Let’s sign the pledge here. h/t The Workers Circle
🍵 FLYERING FOR A FAIR CONTRACT FOR STARBUCKS WORKERS 🍵
Starbucks is more than two years into negotiations with their workers union for their first ever contract, and have yet to make a fair deal. Instead of focusing on getting this done and addressing real issues of understaffing at stores, the corporation has announced plans for a significantly more restrictive dress code, forcing workers to buy a new wardrobe or face discipline. SBWU is asking for our support to push back, calling on supporters to organize in groups of 2 or 3 and host flyering events at not-yet-union stores – they’ll offer flyers, toolkits talking and points and training to leaders. We can learn more here and register a flyering session here. (And even if we can’t, let’s make sure we take the No Contract, No Coffee pledge in solidarity!)
KEEPING AN EYE ON…
Whitney Hermandorfer is a German and I suspect she’s a white supremacist. Why else would she be taking such a stand and why else would Trump choose her? I can’t believe that this is happening in this country but people choose not to see what’s going on until it’s too late.
