🤫 TRUMP DOESN’T WANT US TO KNOW HE’S ON BOARD WITH MEDICAID CUTS 🤫
Want an update on the status of the reconciliation bill? Us too! As of 3AM, the Rules Committee is debating, even though the GOP is hoping to bring it up for a floor vote today or tomorrow. While Speaker Mike Johnson has expanded tax breaks for high-income families enough to get a few moderate holdouts on board, others and far right reps are still publicly saying they’re no votes even after being chastised by Donald Trump. Multiple senators are also calling for changes once they do get this bill through the House. There’s a lot still to be determined.
So let’s focus on what we know right now. Donald Trump yelled at congressmen today that they shouldn’t “f*ck around with Medicaid.” We all have to be very clear the MAGA murder budget does plenty of “f*cking around” with this crucial health program, and 7.6 million middle-income and working Americans are set to “find out” and become uninsured to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. The worst price will be paid by children and seniors in nursing homes who rely on this program. And that’s just the beginning – in total 14 million people will lose health insurance coverage under the MAGA murder budget. (Plus earlier tonight, the Congressional Budget Office released an analysis clearly outlining that the lowest-income 10% of American households will take a financial hit while the highest-income 10% benefit.)
Navigator Research has put out a guide to the do’s and don’ts of talking about Medicaid cuts. Let’s check it out here, and then put it to use in talking to our friends and neighbors about what’s at stake. Let’s also make sure we keep calling our reps (scripts from 5Calls here) to get the message across to them before any final vote, too. And we can find even more ways to fight the big billionaire bailout here.
📞 GOP MAKES IT OFFICIAL: THEY’LL SHATTER SENATE RULES FOR CORPORATE PROFITS 📞
Majority Leader John Thune announced yesterday that the Senate will overrule the parliamentarian and vote on three Congressional Review Act resolutions rolling back California’s tough new protections on auto emissions (see background here). This violates the plain language of the CRA, and it’s a radical undermining of Senate precedents that were treated as sacred when Democrats held the majority to allow the GOP to get around the filibuster. It would also be a devastating blow to state-level efforts against climate change and a major win for the auto and fossil fuel industries.
Let’s reach out to our senators and tell them to put our health and welfare ahead of corporate profits and oppose H.Res. 87, H. Res 88 and H. Res. 89. We can find sample language we can use from Climate Hawks Vote here. Let’s also let them know this is a line they can’t uncross, and if they’re Democrats demand they match the GOP escalation for escalation. If they’re going to rewrite the rules whenever it’s convenient, we must do the same.
📞 TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS, ASYLUM, HUMANITARIAN PAROLE, REFUGEES – WHAT’S HAPPENING? 📞
As of December, citizens of 16 countries were eligible for temporary protected status, or TPS (the count is now 17, reflecting the split between Sudan and South Sudan). Since she took over the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem has been busy vacating and terminating TPS designations and other humanitarian protections for previously categorized countries.
Noem revoked TPS for Venezuela and Haiti in February. This week, the Supreme Court allowed Trump to strip TPS status from 350,000 Venezuelans while their lawsuit against the move continues. Court cases on behalf of Haitian TPS beneficiaries are also in motion.
In April, Noem announced TPS protections would be terminated for immigrants from Afghanistan and Cameroon, claiming without basis that Afghanistan has an “improved security situation” and refugees are safe to return to their Taliban-ruled homeland. Afghans suspected of having helped the US military potentially face imprisonment and execution. Immigration activists are also suing on behalf of TPS recipients from these nations.
For other countries currently covered by TPS, it is likely that their status will at minimum be allowed to expire and not be renewed. Here is the calendar of TPS expiration:
JUNE: Nepal
JULY: Honduras
SEPTEMBER: Syria
NOVEMBER: South Sudan and Burma
DECEMBER: Ethiopia
MARCH 2026: Yemen
SEPTEMBER 2026: El Salvador
The CHNV (Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela) humanitarian parole program has also been terminated. Many parolees, but not all, were eligible to apply for other kinds of legal status, but TPS is also being rolled back, their right to claim asylum is being denied and previous asylum seekers who were in the process of gaining green cards have had their applications frozen. Meanwhile Trump is making a mockery of the refugee program by welcoming White South Africans as “refugees” even though they are neither poverty stricken nor persecuted.
While the most urgent need is to prevent TPS designations from being terminated, we must also work for a more long-term, stable solution. Let’s contact our reps and ask them to condemn the revocation of TPS and support the American Dream and Promise Act, which Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) has reintroduced to create a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and folks with temporary status. We can find a Resistbot petition in support of this bill here, which has language we can use for phone calls if we prefer.
We can also use this tool from the American Friends Service Committee to push Congress for a pathway to citizenship for all immigrants. Lastly, we can connect with and support the National TPS Alliance, an organization formed and led by TPS beneficiaries that advocates to protect their status and for a legal path to permanent residency.
📲 PHONEBANK TO SAVE SOCIAL SECURITY TOMORROW 📲
Elon Musk’s “DOGE” minions have made it painfully clear what “government efficiency” means to them at the Social Security Administration. Their anti-fraud measures have made it tougher for regular Americans to get through and proven their whole concerns were bogus – internal documents suggested their new tools found exactly *two* claims out of 110,000 made over the phone that had a high probability of being fraudulent. Meanwhile, their service cuts, staff firings, and tech changes have led to slower claims processing and growing backlogs, website crashes, dropped calls and long wait times for phone service, and deep fear among those who rely on Social Security that they can’t count on it anymore. These self-inflicted wounds have to be stopped. The Alliance for Retired Americans is starting regular phonebanks TOMORROW at 2PM ET to reach out to retirees about the Trump-Musk attack on Social Security and encourage them to speak up. We can sign up to join them here.

They don't care about Medicaid, Medicare, or Social Security because their moral corruption has allowed them to gain so much wealth that they and their families don't need it. They only care about what benefits themselves and not at all about the well-being of the American people.
