DEMOCRATS CAN’T SHARE THE STAGE WITH BIGOTS
Pastor John Hagee, who was featured as a speaker at the March for Israel, is an evangelical Christian preacher with a long history of Islamophobic, homophobic, transphobic and antisemitic comments – backing the Rothschild conspiracy, blaming “half-breed Jews for the Holocaust” and asserting Hitler was sent by God to push Jews to return to Israel. John McCain famously rejected Hagee’s endorsement in 2008, and he is the sort of hatemonger no Democratic elected official should allow themselves to be on a program with. While the speaker list was kept secret until the morning of the rally and organizers had ensured progressive groups Hagee would not be given a platform, it is notable that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi participated in the rally regardless. Let us reach out to these Democratic leaders, along with the also-present Christofascist Speaker Mike Johnson, and ask them to explain and apologize for associating with Hagee.UNION-BUSTING IS DISGUSTING, AMAZON
Workers at Amazon’s largest air hub, based at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky international airport, are pushing to organize a union. They’re calling for a higher starting wage, 180 hours of paid time off, free on-site childcare and union representation at disciplinary hearings. Amazon has a long history of using aggressive union-busting tactics, and it’s growing at KCVG – last week, a warehouse manager was caught on tape threatening to fire workers for tabling outside work as part of the organizing drive, which is protected activity. Organizers are asking for our support. We can use this tool they’ve provided to call and email management to demand they stop impinging on workers’ rights, or donate to financially back their efforts here if we’re able.
PHONEBANK FOR HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION IN CHICAGO
Another victory on Election Day – the Chicago City Council approved on Tuesday a citywide referendum on increasing a tax on the sale of high-end real estate properties to fund homelessness prevention. The Bring Chicago Home initiative, which would bring in $100 million annually as a dedicated levy to get Chicagoans off the streets and would be a tax cut for 96% of property owners in the city, will get a vote during this March’s Illinois primary. If it works here, maybe it will work other places, too. We can sign up to phonebank and help this effort to better serve the unhoused here.
LET’S HELP IDENTIFY QUALITY SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS SITES
Ad Fontes Media, creator of the Media Bias Chart is taking on the rating of social media news sites. “A study shows that many today rely on video-led content and social media influencers for information rather than from traditional news sources. However, more than half also say they are worried about identifying whether information is factual or false. Now Ad Fontes Media is poised to help news consumers filter the information they find on social media platforms.” They are asking us to recommend to them good quality news sites on social media platforms. “Redressing Historical Racial Injustices: A Toolkit for Policymakers and Advocates, created by the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project at Northeastern University School of Law, is a resource to help state and local governments to understand why it is important to remediate historical racial injustices, and introduces the range of policy approaches to achieving remediation. There isn’t a state, city, town, or hamlet in America without some history of racial injustice. Let’s request our copy of the toolkit, and let’s tell our state and local leaders we want them to download and use it.
