MAGA TO CLEAN ENERGY SUPPORTERS: “TRUST US”
As the climate crisis continues to worsen, the Trump regime has acted as a bought-and-paid-for agent of the fossil fuel industry - acting to kill clean energy projects even at the expense of our jobs and electric bills and empower and enrich oil, gas and coal CEOs. They’ve impounded millions of dollars in clean energy funding and opened tens of millions of acres of public lands for mining and drilling. Now they’re pushing forward with efforts to revamp the National Environmental Policy Act, scheduling a markup on a permitting reform bill called the SPEED Act (H.R. 4776) by the House Natural Resources Committee for tomorrow. Backers are pitching it as a bipartisan compromise that will allow more pipelines and more transmission lines for wind and solar - but with an administration that is actively blocking green energy, in practice it will only help fossil fuels. Climate Hawks Vote is urging us to contact our members of Congress, especially if they’re on the committee, and tell them to oppose this “deal” until Trump gives up his assault on clean energy. We can do so directly or use talking points and this tool from CHV here.
STAND WITH THE FAIR HOUSING THREE
In late September, whistleblowers at the Department of Housing and Urban Development went public with their reports that the Trump Administration has dismantled efforts to combat residential segregation - violating federal law and endangering the public. Civil rights attorneys Paul Osadebe and Palmer Heenan were fired just days later, and we’ve learned that one of their supervisors who had raised similar concerns was also terminated. Vulnerable members of our communities are being left without basic mechanisms to protect them from discrimination by landlords, real estate agents, lenders and corporate investors, and we need to fight to hold MAGA accountable for it.
Let’s reach out to our members of Congress demanding they act to ensure the whistleblowers be reinstated, Housing Secretary Scott Turner is forced to answer for sabotaging the department, and HUD’s ability to protect communities from discrimination is restored. We can find language to use and a petition to sign from Jobs With Justice here.
TRUMP IS SLASHING WAGES FOR FARM WORKERS
In early October, the Trump Administration’s Department of Labor posted harmful regulatory changes that would drastically slash the wages of all farm workers across the United States. Their move cuts income for H-2A farm workers by at least one-third, with cuts ranging from $5 to $7 per hour, depending on the state. In total, farm workers will lose $2.46 billion annually in wages. The regulation was immediately put in effect - however, there is still a chance of reversing it through the legally-required public comment period, which closes December 1st. Let’s make our voices heard - we can submit comments directly here and find language to use from the United Farm Workers here.
HELP GROW THE STARBUCKS STRIKE
We’re now six days in to the Starbucks Workers Union’s unfair labor practices strike with no end in sight. In fact, the corporation has failed to even make contact with labor leaders since picket lines went up on Thursday. Clearly, we’re going to need to ramp up the pressure if we want to get results.
SBWU is holding phonebanks on Saturdays from 8AM-9PM ET, reaching out to baristas to recruit them to the union and inform them of their legal rights as workers during this strike. Let’s sign up to help spread the word to more Starbucks partners here.
We can also:
Sign the No Contract, No Coffee Pledge not to patronize any Starbucks while the strike continues and ask folks in our networks to do the same
Visit and support SBWU members on the picket line. We can find a list of striking locations and scheduled rallies here.
Host a Don’t Buy Starbucks action at a non-union location - talking to customers and asking them to respect the strike. We can sign up to join this effort here.
Donate to the SBWU strike fund here.
JOIN THE GREEN AMENDMENTS MOVEMENT
At least for the near future, we will be stymied in seeking positive environmental action at the federal level. But while we’re on defense in Washington, we can continue to seek progress at the state and local level. One strategy for doing so that’s gained momentum in recent years has been the drive for “green amendments” to state constitutions, like those already in place in Montana and Pennsylvania. These protections make the right to a clean and healthy environment fundamental, and can strengthen the legal hand of community and public interests in our fight. The Franciscan Action Network is hosting a webinar on this push with the movement’s founder, Maya Van Rossum, on December 2nd. Let’s sign up to learn more about this tactic and how we can get involved here.
