SPEAK OUT AGAINST RACISM IN U.S. PRISONS
A UN report has confirmed extremely disturbing allegations of institutional racism in U.S. prisons, including numerous accounts of black women being shackled during childbirth and black men assigned more often to solitary confinement and forced to work in plantation-like settings. The report contains many recommendations that would address the situation including reforming municipal policing, setting up more councils on reparations, and changing prison conditions and protocols. Let’s make sure our MoCs and local municipal officials are familiar with the report and let’s work with others in our community to begin steps to address these dangerous and abhorrent inequalities.
GLIMMERS OF HOPE
With all that’s going on, it can feel as if the sounds of violence, panic, fear, and hatred have taken over our minds, and perhaps even our hearts. It is good to be reminded that we can listen for other voices, and if we listen, we will hear them. “Violence rages in Gaza, but a meeting of Jewish and Muslim women has given me hope,” by journalist Remona Aly contains such voices. Let’s read her article, and let’s check out Women Wage Peace and Nisa-Nashim, two of the organizations she mentions. We can also check out Missing Pages, a project that “highlights the untold stories of solidarity, friendship, and compassion between Muslims and Jews…”
VOTER ID HELP
As we shore up our voting plans for November 7, 2023, let’s consult this Elections Calendar to see if we have an upcoming election. Then, let’s make sure that we have proper ID that our state requires when we cast a ballot. We can do this by checking out the VoteRiders website. Clicking on our state on the homepage gets us the information we need, including in the form of a downloadable card. And if we don’t have ID, VoteRiders will help us to get it—even paying the fees for the documents we need. Let’s use VoteRiders, and spread the word about this helpful resource so everyone can vote.
REDUCING FOOD WASTE FOR THE CLIMATE
Report: Methane accounts for about a quarter of global warming, and nearly 60% of methane emissions come from food waste in landfills. Dozens of local officials have written to the Environmental Protection Agency asking for help in reducing food waste—help like grant funding and technical assistance for landfill alternatives and updated landfill standards. Let’s join these local officials by contacting EPA Administrator Michael Regan and ask that the EPA help municipalities address the problem of food waste—we can use information reported in this AP story—and let’s learn how we can reduce food waste in our own homes.
REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN THE 2024 BALLOT BOX IN SOUTH DAKOTA
With the victories piling up at the ballot box for reproductive rights, advocates are already hard at work at putting abortion on the ballot in South Dakota. They’re looking to gather 60,000 signatures to start the process. If we’re in South Dakota, let’s make sure we sign the petition and volunteer to help get our friends and neighbors to do the same, and we can all chip in financially to support Dakotans For Health in their efforts.

SPEAK OUT FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Regardless of how we feel about the complicated situation in Israel and Gaza, depriving civilians of food, water, fuel, electricity is beyond the scope of what is considered allowable in international conflict. Desperate people are now breaking into UN warehouses, depleting the meager resources that are left. We can help by continuing to press our MoCs and the White House to call for an immediate ceasefire, release of the remaining hostages, and an open border to allow safe passage of humanitarian aid.
