• OHIO ELECTION NIGHT WATCH PARTY

  There are many important elections in Ohio today, but the most watched is probably  ballot Issue #1 on reproductive rights.  Ohio is hoping to do what Michigan did last November and reinstate the rights overturned by the Dobbs decision that negated Roe v. Wade.  So many people all over the country have helped work to make this happen.   Blue Ohio is hosting an election watch party tonight, Nov 7, 2023, at 7:30 PM ET.  Among the special guests will be Jamie Raskin and Simon Rosenberg.  Let’s sign up here and watch the results of our work.

• REVERSE INFANT MORTALITY RATES

  A new CDC report has found that US infant mortality rates rose by 3% in 2022, with significant increases among Native Americans and white non-Hispanics, and among male babies. Leading causes of death were maternal complications and bacterial sepsis of newborns. Health policies that affect mothers and children (or more accurately, lack thereof) are also a significant cause. Infant mortality rose significantly in four states: Georgia, Iowa, Missouri, and Texas. Let’s tell our Members of Congress to co-sponsor the NEWBORN Act (S.2978 and H.R.5789), which, if passed, would “create infant mortality-focused pilot programs in the highest-risk areas of the country.” And let’s also contact our state governors and legislators and tell them we expect them to do more to lower the infant mortality rates in our states and that we support prenatal, maternal, and infant care.

• NO US SCAPEGOATING OF PALESTINIANS

  Remember Ryan Zinke? He was Secretary of the Interior under defeated former President Trump, Inmate Number P01135809. He was also corrupt and obnoxious.  Now, he’s a Republican representative from Montana. And he just introduced a bill that could ban Palestinians from entering the US and expel those who are already here. Zinke claims that this legislation is necessary to keep America safe, but it’s actually a classic authoritarian move to scapegoat vulnerable people, foment hatred, and further divide America. Let’s tell our Members of Congress that individuals should be treated as individuals, that America has no business passing laws that assume a person is a “terrorist” based on their religion or ethnicity or place of origin, and that we want them not only to oppose against Zinke’s bill, but to speak out loudly against it.

• RAISE AWARENESS FOR WIC

  “The WIC program aims to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care.” About half of America’s babies are served by WIC. Studies have shown that this important program has contributed to fewer premature births, fewer infant deaths, better child nutrition, improved cognitive development, and more. Yet, the WIC program is in danger of running out of funds. Let’s tell our Members of Congress to fully fund this humane, life-saving program, and let’s use and share this Fund WIC social media toolkit. h/t Chop Wood Carry Water

• OPPORTUNITY TO SEE “ALLEGIENCE”

  Although best known for his role as Mr. Sulu in the original Star Trek television show, George Takei has had a varied life including being a child sent to a Japanese internment camp with his family during World War II.  A musical based on his experience called Allegiance has been on Broadway and seen worldwide.  On Sunday, Nov. 12 at 7pm ET, AARP is bringing us a free opportunity to watch this musical based on this ill-conceived moment in our history. Let’s register here.

• KY: APPLY FOR EMERGE CANDIDATE TRAINING - LOUISVILLE DEADLINE THIS WEEK.

  Emerge Kentucky is looking for 20-25 Democratic Kentucky women from diverse backgrounds, committed to effective leadership and planning to run for office in the next 5 years. Successful applicants will receive a 6 month 70 hour training course to hone their skills and learn how to run a successful campaign. Program members will also meet campaign experts, elected representatives and become part of Emerge’s state and national network. We can find out more about the program here.  If we, or someone we know in the Louisville area is interested, it’s time to act NOW, since Louisville applications must be submitted by Nov 10, in time for interviews on the next day. Later applicants will have to go to Lexington for December interviews. We can apply here today.
