NORTH CAROLINA: LEARN BEST PRACTICES FOR CANVASSING
According to Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin, a victory on North Carolina could give Harris a decisive win. Because of the state’s efficient counting of early votes, a victory here could forestall disruptive voter suppression attempts in other swing states and ensure a calmer election night. But to win decisively, we must get out the vote and door to door canvassing is one of the most effective ways to do so. If we would like to start knocking doors, the North Carolina Democrats are holding online trainings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 7pm EDT, from now until Oct 31. When we sign up, we will learn why one-on-one conversations with voters are so important, review door knocking best practices and see how to use their canvassing tool, miniVAN. We can find out more about canvassing training, sign up if we would like, and share this information with our friends on social media here.
SHARE ONE-MINUTE VIDEOS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The “One Dem Minute Film Festival” has put together 48 short videos on various issue topics related to the election. They are easy to view and post, and they are inviting people to become “Digital Warriors” and post them widely on social media or share in other ways with people who need to see them. Let’s get involved in this effort.
IS THE SENATE MAP EXPANDING?
We’ve long known this Senate map would be tough for Democrats, but as we enter the final weeks before Election Day we’re seeing signs we might be able to go on offense. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is seeing them too, and on Thursday announced a multi-million dollar investment in TV ads against Ted Cruz in Texas and Rick Scott in Florida. Colin Allred and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell are getting air support, but they need help on the ground too. Let’s consider signing up for a phone or text shift with DMP or with Texas Offense.
POSTAL PROBLEMS EXPECTED FOR BALLOTS
“State and local election officials from across the country on Wednesday warned that problems with the nation’s mail delivery system threaten to disenfranchise voters in the upcoming presidential election, telling the head of the US Postal Service (USPS) that it hasn’t fixed persistent deficiencies.” If we remember, Louis DeJoy, the US postmaster general, has caused issues with mail-in ballots in the 2022 election. With this information in mind, we need to think ahead about how we will cast our November ballots. Absentee ballots are still a good move, but we may want to consider mailing them back sooner than usual or personally dropping them off at a ballot box. In either case, let’s make sure to track our ballot. Let’s take the time to make a plan for this and to check if our ballot was received.
RECHANNELING POLLING ANXIETY
“The Polling Imperilment,” an article by Rick Perlstein published in The American Prospect, summarizes how the book Lost in a Gallup by W. Joseph Campbell shows that “presidential polls are almost always wrong, consistently, in deeply patterned ways.” Let’s read Perlstein’s article, and let’s remember that every minute we spend looking at poll results is one less minute that we dedicate to calling a voter, or knocking on a voter’s door, or reaching a voter by postcard, text, or letter. Let’s stop reading polls, which are backward-looking anyway, and let’s change the future by working to get the vote out for Harris / Walz and down ballot Democrats.
While I saw a phone banking opportunities with Florida and Texas, I did not see any texting campaign. What am I missing? If anyone has a link to these campaigns, please post and thank you.
