DON’T LET THIS FAMILY SEPARATION DOCUMENTARY BE SILENCED
For all the conservative complaints about the “liberal media,” the liberal standard bearer cable news channel has allegedly delayed the broadcast of a major documentary to avoid upsetting Trump. MSNBC has acquired “Separated,” Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris’ project on the Trump Administration’s family separation policy. But in the midst of an election cycle dominated by Trump’s anti-immigrant extremism they will not air it until December 7th. Morris suggested from the beginning this decision was driven by political considerations, and media journalist Oliver Darcy is now reporting that NBC chose to push back the airing in hopes Trump will agree to a presidential debate on their network. Given Trump’s proposal for mass deportation will bring this sort of tragedy to countless more families, this is exactly the perspective news channels should be providing to their viewers as they make their final decisions. Let’s reach out to the network and urge them to air this documentary while the American public still has a say on whether the perpetrator of these wrongs will take power again. They can be reached by email at MSNBCTVinfo@nbcuni.com. We can also try NBC News President of Editorial Rebecca Blumenstein at rebecca.blumenstein@nbcuni.com.
PHONE BANKING FOR INTROVERTS TUESDAY
The Center for Common Ground has found that talking to a voter increases the likelihood that they will vote by 47%, and that voters who receive a voicemail from CCG are 16% more likely to vote. For those of us who are hesitant to make phone calls to strangers, CCG has created an event called Phone Banking for Introverts. It takes place virtually on Tuesday, Oct 15th at 6PM ET. If we think that phone banking is out of our comfort zone but we still feel we’d like to try it, let’s sign up for this supportive learning opportunity!
A JUST FEDERAL JUDICIARY NEEDS A DEMOCRATIC SENATE
In May, the Senate confirmed President Biden’s 200th federal judge. His picks are historic: more non-white judges installed than any president in history, and the majority are female. If we want to continue building a federal judiciary that looks like the American people, we need to hold the Senate. Here’s one place to start: Grandmothers for a Brighter Future is sending postcards to Democratic and Independent women in Ohio to get the vote out for Senator Sherrod Brown who is polling as a toss-up against a Republican challenger. We can fill out this order form and the Grandmothers will email us our postcard kits. And we can find volunteer opportunities for the full list of Senate seats we can hold or play offense on here:
ARIZONA (open seat, Ruben Gallego) with the state party
FLORIDA (challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell) with Debbie for Florida
MARYLAND (open seat, Angela Alsobrooks) with Maryland Victory
MICHIGAN (open seat, Elissa Slotkin) with Michigan Victory
MISSOURI (challenger Lucas Kunce) with Missouri Victory and the Kunce campaign
MONTANA (incumbent Jon Tester) with Big Sky Victory
NEBRASKA (challenger Dan Osborn, an independent labor activist running against a Republican in a race without a Democratic nominee) with Osborn for Senate
OHIO (incumbent Sherrod Brown) with Organizing for Ohio
PENNSYLVANIA (incumbent Bob Casey) with the state party
TEXAS (challenger Colin Allred) with Texas Offense
WISCONSIN (incumbent Tammy Baldwin) with the Wisconsin Dems
MAKING THE CASE AGAINST COMSTOCK - BRIEFING TODAY
)
We still have a little time left if we want to write a letter to the editor explaining how Trump can ban abortion with laws already on the books. And if we’re looking for more information and more ways to make the case, the Cancel Comstock Coalition and the Progressive Caucus Action Fund are holding a virtual briefing on this zombie law TODAY at 1pm ET. We’ll hear from Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), author of the Stop Comstock Act, and experts in law, policy, and public health on the Comstock Act’s potential impact on our health and rights, anti-abortion extremists’ attempt to resurrect this law and weaponize it against us, and what we can do about it. We can sign up here. (h/t
GET HELP WITH VOTER ID - AFTER DISASTER AND ALWAYS
With so much to deal with after a traumatic event like a hurricane, fire or other natural disaster, replacing ID documents can seem like an overwhelming task. Still, we need them for so many things - including, in many states, voting. VoteRiders understands how stressful this task can be and is here to assist, with experts, including pro bono lawyers, ready to help us get the IDs we need. They also have information and who to contact and what to do to get back our missing ID documents. We call or text VoterRiders Helpline at 866-432-8683 or reach out through their website to help replace our missing IDs. If we have friends who also need this help, we can share this link with them as well. This is also a good moment to remember the millions of Americans who have been silenced at the ballot box because they lacked basic photo ID in the first place, and consider a donation to the Project ID/Spread The Vote team to help them get the necessary documents and make their voices heard.
