Trump’s bombing of Venezuelan families has emboldened this administration to follow its warmongering instincts. Since then, the regime has insisted the United States will run Venezuela and has dominion over the Western Hemisphere and threatened to attack Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico. In perhaps the clearest sign this White House is out of control, they have also ratcheted up their promises to seize Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of 57,000 people controlled by Denmark, and made it explicit they are considering military action to do so.
Donald Trump, who ran claiming opposition to more wars, is now suggesting he’ll send our young men and women into battle against NATO.
They are also planning on imposing tariffs on Denmark and seven other NATO nations who have spoken up against their saber-rattling, further raising prices on Americans, and are considering an attempt to purchase the island, which they estimate could cost taxpayers $700 billion - half the Pentagon’s budget.
These are the Putin-esque battle cries of a rogue state, threatening wars of conquest against anyone who does not bend to their will. That may sound great to corporate interests and Trump’s billionaire donors, one of whom gave him the whole idea. But this is a war the American people don’t want to conquer people who don’t want to be Americans aimed at goals that can be easily served by working with Greenlanders and Denmark instead of treating them like enemies. It would be a waste of resources at a time when the White House is claiming we can’t afford to make health care and child care affordable. The threats alone are shattering the alliance that helped us win the Cold War.
Even worse, in an extraordinary message to the prime minister of Norway that must be read to be believed Trump directly connected his commitment to this annexation to his hurt feelings about not winning the Nobel Peace Prize. This isn’t about what’s good for America. This is about Trump getting the world’s greatest participation trophy.
Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has announced he will introduce a war powers resolution blocking military action against Greenland, and he has already proposed an amendment to the Senate Defense appropriations bill which must be passed by January 31st prohibiting the use of taxpayer money for use of military force against the island. With numerous Republicans (even including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Speaker Mike Johnson) expressing some level of opposition to a Greenland invasion, there is a potential legislative majority to nip this rush to war in the bud. But this Congress isn’t going to do anything to get in Trump’s way without a fight.
Let’s make it loud and clear before this gets any further: we are saying hell no to an invasion of Greenland and a war against our NATO allies and hell no to a Greenland tax. Let Greenlanders decide their future for themselves. Donald Trump’s billionaire backers want to control Greenland to boost their profit margins. Trump himself has made it embarrassingly clear he wants to control Greenland to soothe his wounded pride after not getting the Nobel Peace Prize, like the world’s largest consolation gift.
Apparently it needs to be said over and over again: this conquest is their dream, not the American people’s. There is no national interest in Greenland that cannot be served by working with Greenlanders and Denmark instead of treating them as enemies. We do not want a war against our NATO allies, and we do not want to pay billions in taxes to fuel corporate profits and the President’s ego.
In between sending pouty, childish messages to world leaders, Donald Trump has threatened a massive tax hike in the form of new tariffs against eight of our closest friends in Europe. As anyone who has been shopping in the last year can tell you, these import taxes will end up being paid by us. Regular Americans are already dealing with artificially high prices from the previous round of Trump taxes, and now he is proposing jacking them even higher for an annexation we didn’t vote for.
In addition, we’ve learned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is coming up with a proposal to purchase Greenland, which published estimates suggest they believe could cost $700 billion. The White House is claiming we can’t afford to make health care or child care affordable, but they are willing to add half the Pentagon’s budget to government spending for Trump’s obsession.
Congress needs to act before this goes any further. In addition to passing a war powers resolution and using the appropriations process to block a war on Greenland, you must ensure not a single American taxpayer dollar goes to fund Trump’s Participation Trophy. Please immediately announce you will back a measure to block any of the Greenland tariffs from going into effect, and support an amendment to the appropriations bills banning any taxpayer funds, new or repurposed, from being used to purchase Greenland or influence anyone into backing a takeover.
