TELL CONGRESS TO STAND WITH UKRAINE
We are well into the fifth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and it’s been over a full year since Trump very publicly attempted to bully President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office, insisting he “didn’t have the cards.” We have reduced military aid by 99%, leaving our European friends to try to fill in the shortfalls. And yet Ukraine not only still stands, through military innovation and pure bravery they have managed to gain the upper hand in their fight to retain their freedom, liberating some of their territory in both April and May. In Moscow, senior government officials are reportedly arguing the war is now unaffordable for Putin. We may have a window to bring this war to an end with Kyiv negotiating from a position of strength.
One thing that could certainly help: if the United States starts showing up for our friends again.
Democrats have managed to force a vote on the Ukraine Support Act (H.R. 2913), which would secure new aid and impose new sanctions on Russia, gaining the third necessary GOP signature on a discharge petition in May. The House is set to begin consideration of it today.
There’s a reason Mike Johnson has refused to put this on the floor. While Donald Trump is prepared to roll over for Putin, many rank-and-file Republicans aren’t, and past aid votes have attracted a lot of GOP support. If we can build a substantial bipartisan majority here, we may ultimately be able to put the White House in a position where acquiescing makes sense. 🗣️ Let’s call our reps, especially if they’re Republicans, and urge them to vote yes. We can find call scripts here. 🗣️
We will also likely to see the House beginning the procedure to pass the WIC cuts in the agriculture appropriations bill and vote on an Iran war powers resolution today. And we’ll have a lot more to say about Trump’s deeply unqualified henchmen Bill Pulte being named acting Director of National Intelligence in the next few days.
HUNGER STRIKE, DAY #13/#17: RETALIATION
Folks held captive by ICE continue to go on hunger and labor strike in multiple camps, demanding adequate medical care, safe food and water, due process, to be able to communicate with their families, freedom for vulnerable elderly, young and pregnant women, and freedom for everyone. Yesterday we learned of some frightening developments for those protesting at the camp in Adelanto, California. After Reps. Judy Chu, Jimmy Gomez and Pete Aguilar were able to meet with some of the strikers in person on Monday, LA Taco reports that ICE began retaliating against them - cutting off communication with their loved ones, storming cells and placing several people in solitary.
With its location far from population centers, the Adelanto strike has not gotten the same attention as Delaney Hall’s. They need our support right now. 📢 Activists on the ground are asking us to call these three representatives, our own members of Congress and the Los Angeles ICE field office to demand an end to these punishments. We can find contact info and scripts here and more details here. We can also reach out to Los Angeles media to urge them to report on the retaliation – contact info here. 📢
There were some more positive developments on the East Coast today. The barricades that kept protesters away from Delaney Hall were removed, the curfew was lifted and they were able to return to the doorstep of the camp. Meanwhile, New Jersey’s state attorney general sued GEO Group over its refusal to allow state health inspectors full access, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced the city will be expanding its suit to shut down the facility.
🫱🏻🫲🏿 Make the Road is holding a mass call TONIGHT at 8PM ET to give us a chance to hear from immigrant rights activists on the ground in Newark and learn what we can do to support their efforts. We can register to join them here. 🫱🏾🫲🏼
✊🏻 We can find more ways to show our solidarity here.✊🏾
THIS JULY, WE’RE MAKING SURE FOLKS CAN GET TO THE VOTING BOOTH
Jim Crow has won a victory they’ve been seeking for six decades, and as Nikole Hannah-Jones put it, just like the first time they rose up “what is at stake is no less than American democracy itself.” Gains in Black political representation that were secured over years are being erased in a matter of days, with the loss of a Black-majority district in Alabama confirmed by the Supreme Court last night. But we are seeing a surge of activism in response, with folks across the South and the entire nation engaging in the work it will take to build back what the white nationalists have burned down.
One of the tentpole events for this activism in the next few months will be the annual honoring of the legacy of John Lewis: the Good Trouble Lives On Day of Action, this year extended to a full weekend from July 17-19. We’ll be mobilizing folks across the country that weekend to register voters, check the status of those at risk of being purged from the rolls, recruit poll workers, and teach their communities about the rights we still have. (Rogan’s List is a proud partner for GTLO!)
🙋🏾♀️ We’re recruiting event hosts for these voter outreach events right now, and the coalition will be holding a movement call TOMORROW at 7PM ET to talk about what they’ll look like. If we’re interested in taking a leadership role, let’s sign up to join the call here. We can also get going and register our events here. 🙋🏻♂️
🙋🏾♀️ If we want to be foot soldiers in this movement, we’ll be able to find events near us as they’re scheduled here. 🙋🏻♂️
HELP A TARGETED ACTIVIST PAY HER LEGAL BILLS
Mahmoud Khalil isn’t the only pro-Palestinian protester at Columbia who needs our solidarity. The environment on their campus has become increasingly hostile for student organizers, especially those calling for institutional accountability. Students have faced investigations, public smears, doxxing, disciplinary threats and even legal action for criticizing university leadership and trustees.
One student who had already been previously targeted (and whose name we’ve been asked not to publicize) is now facing significant fees after being named in a legal complaint from a member of the university board of trustees, over criticism she says she was not involved in. While the complaint has been resolved, the bills remain. 💵 Sunrise Columbia is helping raise the funds to cover them. Let’s stand up for free speech and our fellow activists and contribute here. 💵
SPEAK OUT AGAINST TRUMP’S ‘TRIUMPHAL ARCH’
President Donald Trump’s design for the Triumphal Arch he wants built at an entrance to the nation’s capital is on the agenda for the National Capital Planning Commission’s meeting tomorrow. This plan would significantly screw up the DC skyline and interrupt the historically meaningful relationship between the Lincoln Memorial on one side of the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Arlington National Cemetery on the other.
✍🏼 We have until NOON EASTERN/9AM PACIFIC today to submit our comments to them opposing this hideous and extensive vanity project. We can find a sample letter from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to work from here, and more examples and instructions on how to register our objections here. We can then join in the NCPC’s meeting at 1PM TOMORROW here. ✍🏾

A PRIMARY NIGHT RUN-DOWN, FEATURING A MISSING CONGRESSMAN
The biggest primary night of the year is in the books, and we’ve got a slew of new nominees to rally behind.
In New Jersey:
Republican Congressman Tom Kean won his second term in 2024 by 5.4 points, and Trump only carried the New Jersey Seventh Congressional District 50-48. So it was at the top of everyone’s radar at the beginning of the cycle, even before Kean provided crucial votes to cut Medicaid and food aid to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and super-charge the deportation machine and protected Trump’s tariffs. Then he disappeared. He last voted in Congress on March 5th and hasn’t been seen in public in months, with his office offering no explanation beyond “a personal medical issue” that he should fully recover from “soon.” The Mystery of The Missing Congressman did not get a solution last night, but we did learn he’ll be challenged (we guess?) by former Navy helicopter pilot and working mom Rebecca Bennett. 🗳️ We can sign up to volunteer for her campaign here. 🗳️
Flipping the New Jersey Second District, which voted Trump 56-43 in 2024, is a tougher prospect. But turncoat Rep. Jeff Van Drew reminded us all of the importance of trying this week with his blatant lies about the conditions at the ICE camp at Delaney Hall. Cape May mayor Zack Mullock won a clear victory in a four-candidate primary to take the Democratic nomination. 📢 We can follow his campaign on social media here. 📢
(In other New Jersey results, progressive surgeon and combat veteran Dr. Adam Hamawy won the nod in the very blue 12th Congressional District and should have an easy road to the House.)
In Iowa:
Iowa has shifted sharply to the right over the Trump era, but this year has emerged as a battleground for Congress as prices have skyrocketed and Trump’s approval ratings have collapsed. We’ve already pushed Senator Joni “Well, We’re All Going to Die” Ernst into retirement, and early polling has suggested our nominee will have a real shot against GOP Rep. Ashley Hinson as she runs to replace her. State rep. Josh Turek, a populist born with spina bifida who has won gold medals in the Paralympics and won a traditionally red legislative district by hauling himself up voters’ steps using his arms to knock doors, will be the Democratic standard bearer. 🗳️ We can sign up to volunteer for his campaign here. 🗳️
Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand locked up the nomination for governor months ago. Polling in April had him at 51% in this deep red state, and he’ll be up against MAHA-aligned businessman Zach Lahn. ☎️ Rob has general election phonebanks starting tomorrow, and we can sign up and find more opportunities to help him here. ☎️
In the Iowa First, we’re headed for a third race between former Democratic State Rep. Christina Bohannon and incumbent Marianette Miller-Meeks. Bohannan lost by a mere 799 votes in 2024, and we’re hoping the third time is the charm. 🗳️ We can sign up to volunteer for Christina here. 🗳️
In the Iowa Second, Democratic state rep. and chaplain Lindsay James will run to replace Rep. Hinson in a 54-44 Trump district. She’s emphasized the damage of the MAGA Murder Budget and lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 55, and she’ll face Trump’s hand pick former state Rep. Joe Mitchell in November. 📢 We can help promote her on social media here. 📢
A number of major races in Montana and California remain uncalled, and we’ll update in the next few days. But fears that Democrats might be locked out of the California governor’s race proved unfounded, with former congressman, state AG and Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra likely set to to take on Republican tv personality Steve Hilton. Progressive billionaire Tom Steyer sits in third, with Republican sheriff Chad Bianco a full eight points behind him.
